Balance Druid Overview & Changes - WoW Forever Guide
Balance Druid in WoW Forever uses Wrath to prepare faster Starfires through Eclipse. Moonfire and Insect Swarm keep ticking between casts, while Moonkin Form brings party crit. Healing still means leaving Moonkin and losing cast time on the enemy.
Balance Druid overview
Choose Balance for ranged damage with roots and off-healing, if you are comfortable changing your next cast when the fight moves. Spend Eclipse charges in safe casting windows rather than forcing a fixed cast order. Mana talents keep you casting longer, but repeated Moonfire refreshes still cost.
On this page
The biggest changes from Classic
- Wrath supplies Eclipse without a crit
At rank 1, Eclipse takes 0.17 seconds off your next two Starfires, stores up to four charges and lasts 15 seconds. You do not need a crit to prepare those casts.
- Direct crits trigger Nature's Grace
After a non-periodic spell crit, Nature's Grace gives 10% spellcasting speed and GCD reduction for three seconds. DoT crits do not trigger it.
- Moonkin changes your healing access
Moonkin Form blocks healing spells. If you are covering a healer's absence, leave form before the emergency, not when someone is already waiting on a heal.
Balance Druid
Ranged DPS
Classic raid Balance leaned on repeated Starfire casts. Forever gives Wrath a cast-time benefit for Starfire and strengthens periodic damage. Casting time left, charges ready and target health now decide your next spell.
Build your talentsSpend Eclipse charges while you can finish Starfire
Cast Wrath to prepare Eclipse, then spend it on Starfire when you have room to finish the cast. Wrath is Nature damage; Starfire is Arcane. At rank 1, each qualifying Wrath prepares a 0.17-second cast-time reduction for your next two Starfires, and the effect holds at most four charges for 15 seconds. Once you are at the cap, more Wraths cannot bank extra Starfires for later.
Check the next forced movement before adding charges. If a mechanic is about to send you running, spending a charge you already have beats another Wrath preparing casts you will not finish. If you only have time for the shorter Wrath, take it and move; an interrupted Starfire deals no damage.
Improved Starfire cuts Starfire's cast time separately: half a second at rank 5, with a 15% chance to stun for three seconds. Treat that stun as extra control against susceptible enemies, not an assigned interrupt. It is only a chance on a damaging cast, and a boss need not be stunnable.
Choose Wrath or Starfire by the window you have
Eclipse rewards Wrath when you can follow it with Starfire: each qualifying Wrath prepares a cast-time reduction for your next two Starfires, holding at most four charges for 15 seconds. A Wrath that only refreshes charges you cannot spend is worth less than a Starfire you can finish.
If you can spend two Starfire charges before moving, a Wrath between them may leave the second Starfire unfinished. With no charges ready and a clear casting window, Wrath prepares the following Starfire instead. Decide by the casts you can finish, not by pressing Wrath on reflex.
Moonfire and Insect Swarm fill movement and upkeep between Starfire casts. Recasting a healthy Moonfire early spends mana and overwrites remaining ticks, so let it run unless the refresh is due anyway.
Place DoTs before movement or sustained damage
Apply Moonfire and Insect Swarm to enemies that will live through enough ticks to justify the casts: Moonfire gives an initial Arcane hit plus periodic damage, and Insect Swarm deals Nature damage over time and cuts the target's chance to hit with attacks by 2%. On a nearly dead add, finish it with damage that lands promptly instead of starting both effects.
Nature's Splendor extends Moonfire by three seconds and Insect Swarm by two, which spaces out refreshes on durable enemies. Let ticks run while you cast Wrath and Starfire, and refresh during movement when one is due. Extra duration does nothing for a DoT applied just before the target dies or becomes unavailable.
Genesis increases periodic damage and healing, while Improved Moonfire improves Moonfire's damage and critical chance. Neither makes spreading DoTs onto controlled enemies worthwhile. Keep the kill target separate from anything the group wants rooted or asleep.
React to Nature's Grace without waiting for it
A non-periodic spell crit activates Nature's Grace for three seconds, increasing spellcasting speed and cutting the GCD by 10%. Use the short window for casts you need right now. Unlike Classic's half-second reduction to the next spell, this benefit runs on a timer instead of waiting for one later cast.
A direct Wrath or Starfire crit can trigger it; periodic Moonfire or Insect Swarm crits cannot. That is separate from Eclipse, which does not need Wrath to crit, so you can prepare faster Starfires without waiting on either a crit or a Nature's Grace window.
Keep mana for the last part of the fight
Improved Wrath reduces Wrath's cast time and mana cost: half a second and 50% at rank 5. Moonglow reduces damaging spell mana costs more broadly, by 8% at rank 1. Cheaper Wraths make the old Classic habit of treating Starfire as the only sustained raid cast worth revisiting.
When mana drains too fast, check early DoT refreshes and unnecessary form changes before adding regeneration gear. A Moonfire that replaces most of its own duration, or a Moonkin re-entry right before another required heal, spends mana for little damage. Keep enough for an agreed off-heal and the return to your damage role.
Reflection in Restoration keeps part of your mana regeneration while casting. It costs points outside Balance, so weigh that sustain against damage talents you would leave unfinished. A faster cast or an Eclipse charge does not make Starfire cheaper.

Choose damage, sustain or stronger roots
Moonfury increases Arcane and Nature spell damage. Vengeance increases those schools' critical strike damage bonus; at rank 1 its 20% applies to the bonus portion, not the whole critical hit, and it requires both points in Improved Moonfire. Damage points like these compete with points spent holding extra enemies with roots.
At rank 1, Overgrowth lets you keep one extra target affected by Entangling Roots, while Improved Entangling Roots increases root damage and how much damage a rooted target can take before the effect breaks. Those points pay off when holding a second melee enemy off the healer buys time to kill the first. Roots can still break under damage, so mark the controlled enemies and keep cleave away.
Moonkin Form takes at least 31 Balance points, leaving at most 20 elsewhere; Reflection sits in Restoration's third row and fits inside that remainder. Nature's Swiftness needs at least 21 Restoration points, so it cannot fit alongside Moonkin in a 51-point build. For old talents that moved or became baseline, see the removed Classic talent comparison.
Keep party coverage and off-healing practical
Moonkin Form grants 3% crit to party members within 45 yards, exclusive with Leader of the Pack. Stay within reach of your party without standing in unsafe ground. If a Bear already supplies Leader of the Pack to that party, the crit is covered; the two auras do not stack into 6%. The Druid party guide covers splitting the coverage.
When a healer dies or is pulled away, tell the group you are helping, drop Moonkin and heal the player in immediate danger. Stay out of form if several follow-up heals are coming instead of paying for repeated Moonkin entries between them. You give up damage and the aura while healing, but a tank who lives gives everyone more time on the pull.
In solo play or PvP, root a susceptible melee enemy to make space before healing. Moonkin Form increases armor from items by 360%, but armor does not save you from every spell attack. Use distance and cover against casters rather than trying to absorb their damage because you are in form. Race cooldowns are covered in the Druid racial choices.
Compare spell damage, hit, crit and mana
Spell damage boosts your casts, hit helps them land, and crit makes qualifying spells hit harder while direct crits can trigger Nature's Grace. At rank 1, Nature's Reach gives 2% hit to spells and attacks plus 10% more range on offensive Balance spells; count it when comparing hit items. The range does not extend your heals.
A bigger mana pool and more regeneration keep you casting through a long pull, but they cost you other stats on the item. If you end fights with mana left, a damage upgrade may beat another sustain piece. If you run dry even after cutting wasted casts, trading some damage for mana can keep you casting to the end instead of waiting.
Unified crit and hit do not turn a Feral damage set into a Balance set. Look for caster-weapon spell damage and healing rather than picking a weapon for its melee DPS; bonus healing contributes one third as much bonus damage, which helps a healing item during leveling but does not make its whole healing value spell damage. The parent gearing section covers shared item changes.
Balance Druid questions
Do Starfire crits trigger a second Eclipse for Wrath?
No. Eclipse runs from Wrath to faster Starfires. A direct crit can trigger Nature's Grace, but there is no reverse Eclipse effect.
Is Insect Swarm only a damage spell?
It also cuts the target's chance to hit with attacks by 2%. That is a defensive use on an enemy attacking your group, separate from how much periodic damage you expect from Insect Swarm.
Can Moonkin Form and Nature's Swiftness fit together?
No. Moonkin Form needs at least 31 Balance points and Nature's Swiftness at least 21 Restoration points, so together they exceed the 51-point budget. You can still leave Moonkin and cast ordinary heals.
Does Nature's Reach increase my off-healing range?
No. The range increase applies to offensive Balance spells. The separate hit bonus helps spells and attacks land on enemies; neither improves healing.
