WoW Forever Mage Guide: Arcane, Fire, & Frost Changes
Mage gains Arcane Blast setups, faster Pyroblasts from direct crits, and Fingers of Frost procs that let you use Frozen-target bonuses without rooting the enemy. Mana, movement and the target's spell-school defenses determine which sequence you can finish.
What changes for Mage?
Arcane now has an Arcane-damage rotation to build around, rather than mainly supplying cooldowns for a Frostbolt build. Fire adds Hot Streak to its cast-and-burn play, while Frost gains Ice Lance and proc-based Shatter opportunities alongside its slows and shields. Choose Arcane for mana-intensive setup and finishers, Fire for crit-driven casting, or Frost for control and Frozen-target damage. Each still brings the Mage tools that matter between damage casts: Polymorph, Counterspell and curse removal.

The biggest changes from Classic
- Arcane Blast buffs other spells
Arcane Blast stacks increase the damage of your other spells, not Arcane Blast itself. Each stack also raises its mana cost. The next different damage spell ends the effect, making the choice of finisher and the amount of setup more important than automatically reaching four stacks.
- Hot Streak shortens Pyroblast
Eligible non-periodic crits grant a 15-second Hot Streak that cuts Pyroblast cast time by 25% per stack, up to three stacks. This is not a two-crits-then-instant-Pyroblast rule. Fire gains a casting opportunity to manage, not a guaranteed instant answer to movement.
- Frost creates frozen-target opportunities
Fingers of Frost lets a spell treat its target as Frozen, connecting your Chill effects to Shatter and Ice Lance. Actual roots remain valuable for stopping enemies; the proc gives Frost a separate damage opportunity when a target cannot simply be held in place.
Arcane Mage
Ranged DPS
Arcane combines increasingly expensive Blast casts with a finisher from another spell and free, accelerated Arcane Missiles. Decide how much mana and stationary time you can spend before switching.
Build your talentsBuild only the stacks you can spend
Arcane Blast increases the damage of all your other spells by 10% each time you cast it, stacks up to four times and lasts eight seconds or until another damage spell is cast. Each cast also increases Arcane Blast's mana cost by 175%. Arcane Blast does not increase its own damage through this effect; the extra mana buys damage for the finisher.
Choose the spender before starting the setup. Arcane Missiles keeps you in Arcane; a Fire or Frost spell offers a cross-school payoff. An instant damage spell can cash out before forced movement, but also spends the same setup you might have wanted for a larger cast. On a nearly dead target, extra setup can cost mana without leaving enough lifetime for the payoff.
Use fewer than four stacks when a pull is ending, movement is approaching or mana recovery is far away. Spend the stacks before their eight-second duration expires.
Missile Barrage creates a cheaper exit
Missile Barrage gives Arcane Blast a 40% proc chance, while Fireball, Frostbolt and Frostfire Bolt each have a 20% chance. The next Arcane Missiles channel has its duration reduced by 50%, its mana cost reduced by 100%, and fires missiles every 0.5 seconds. The damage arrives sooner, you spend less time standing still, and the channel costs no mana.
Take the free missiles when another Arcane Blast would spend mana you need for the rest of the fight. Because Fire and Frost fillers can also trigger it, Missile Barrage supports mixed-school play rather than demanding Arcane Blast on every preceding cast. It remains a channel: start it where you can finish it, not as the floor beneath you becomes unsafe.
Improved Channeling helps against damage pushback on Arcane Missiles and Arcane Blast. It does not make either spell immune to an enemy interrupt, nor does a shorter channel let you move while casting.
Match cooldowns to mana and threat
Arcane Power grants 30% more spell damage and 30% greater mana cost for 15 seconds. Use it when the target will remain attackable and the tank has established control. Pairing it with costly Arcane Blast setup spends mana quickly; the important resource is how many useful casts fit before the fight forces you to stop.
Presence of Mind makes your next Mage spell with a cast time below ten seconds instant. That gives you a deliberate mobile cast or a fast damage delivery, separate from Missile Barrage's channel acceleration. It can also make Polymorph instant when an enemy needs immediate control.
Arcane Concentration supplies Clearcasting, while Arcane Meditation supports mana regeneration during casting. Arcane Subtlety reduces Arcane threat, but its threat clause does not cover a Fire or Frost finisher. A mixed-school sequence needs attention to the finishing school's threat support as well as its damage talents.
Fire Mage
Ranged DPS
Fire turns direct crits into shorter Pyroblasts while maintaining burns and a personal Scorch debuff. It favors time on a durable target; Fire Blast and Blast Wave supply damage and control when a long cast will not fit.
Build your talentsHot Streak stacks and casting windows
Hot Streak comes from non-periodic critical strikes with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch. Each stack reduces Pyroblast's cast time by 25%, up to three stacks, and the effect lasts 15 seconds. There is no consecutive-crit requirement in this description. Three stacks mean a 75% cast-time reduction, not an instant Pyroblast.
Watch both stacks and the available casting window. Waiting for another crit is useful only if you still get to cast afterward. An approaching movement mechanic or dying target can favor an earlier, partially accelerated Pyroblast; a stable target gives you room to develop the next opportunity. Do not mistake the short cast for a spell you can fire while running.
Periodic crits do not feed Hot Streak: the trigger explicitly excludes them. Pyroblast is also absent from the listed triggering spells. Only the four listed spells build its stacks.
Scorch and Combustion reward target commitment
Improved Scorch can apply a personal Fire vulnerability: each stack increases your Fire damage to that target by 3%, up to five stacks, for 30 seconds. Rank 1 gives Scorch a 33% application chance, so five casts do not guarantee five stacks. Classic's Fire Vulnerability increases Fire damage taken for the group. In Forever, each Mage needs to maintain their own bonus.
Putting casts into Scorch is an investment in later Fire damage. It fits a durable priority target much better than a mob that will die during setup. Target swaps carry a cost beyond travel time: your new enemy does not inherit the work you did on the old one.
Combustion increases Fire crit chance by 10% with each Fire damage spell hit and ends after four non-periodic Fire crits. Classic's version ends after three Fire crits. The Forever completion condition belongs to direct critical hits; do not count periodic crits toward those four. Activate it with enough uninterrupted target access to benefit from the rising crit chance and the Hot Streak opportunities your eligible spells generate.
Burns, burst and close-range AoE
Ignite adds a burn after Fire spell crits, and Pyroblast combines immediate damage with a 12-second burn. Periodic crits make the remaining Pyroblast burn part of your crit investment, not just a small extra after the impact. An early Pyroblast refresh can replace remaining burn ticks. Weigh that loss against the new direct hit and your remaining Hot Streak window; waiting for every tick is not automatically the best choice. On a dying add, favor damage that lands before death rather than judging Pyroblast by its full-duration total. Keep Ignite and mana-return decisions tied to their own talent triggers, not to a chain of assumed periodic procs.
Burning Soul reduces Fire threat and protects casts from damage pushback. Wait for the tank to gather the pack before using area damage. Improved Flamestrike rewards clustered targets, while Blast Wave deals damage around you and dazes enemies for six seconds. Moving into range of several uncontrolled mobs to use it trades distance for immediate danger.
Wake of Fire reduces Fire Blast's cooldown and rewards a non-trivial kill with increased crit chance on the next Fire Blast within 20 seconds. That favors carrying momentum between quest mobs or finishing an add before switching back. If movement is about to start, saving Fire Blast lets you deal damage while repositioning.
Frost Mage
Ranged DPS / Control
Frost adds Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost to its slows, shields and mana-efficient casting. A proc supplies a damage opportunity against a root-immune enemy; actual roots remain useful for kiting and peeling.
Build your talentsSeparate Frozen from merely slowed
Ice Lance deals 300% increased damage to Frozen targets. A Chill slow is not by itself a freeze. Classic Shatter also required a Frozen target; it was not a standing crit bonus against any enemy you could slow. Frost Nova and Frostbite create actual frozen-target opportunities, while Fingers of Frost lets the next spell treat its target as Frozen. Rank 1 grants one affected spell cast and lasts 15 seconds.
Shatter increases the critical strike chance of all your spells against Frozen targets. That makes the next spell choice relevant: Ice Lance has its explicit Frozen bonus, while a casted spell can use Shatter if you have time to land the opportunity. With Rank 1, plan around one affected spell, not a two-charge sequence.
Winter's Chill now specifically increases the crit chance of your Ice Lance and Frostbolt against the target. Classic's debuff increases the chance a Frost spell critically hits the target more broadly. Forever ties this part of the tree to your own core attacks; it is not a reason to promise a raid-wide Frost crit service.
Keep the pack together
Improved Blizzard adds a Chill to the channel, but its Rank 3 slow is 40% for 1.5 seconds, down from Classic's 65% for two seconds before Permafrost. Old kiting distances and timings need more room here. Permafrost improves Chill duration and slowing strength, while Arctic Reach increases Blizzard range and expands the area covered by Frost Nova and Cone of Cold. Use that extra distance to finish the channel before retreating.
Frostbite can freeze individual enemies when Chill effects trigger it. That helps against a pursuer, but irregular freezes can split a tightly gathered pack: some mobs stop while others keep moving. Choose control talents for the pulls you intend to make rather than assuming every extra root improves every AoE route.
In groups, wait for gathering and threat before committing to the channel. Keep crowd-controlled enemies outside your damage area. A pack that stays slowed and grouped is easier for the tank to recover than enemies scattered by premature burst and individual freezes.
Use defenses to preserve useful casts
Frost Channeling reduces both Frost mana cost and threat. That is sustained value on long pulls and repeated dungeon packs: less time recovering and more room to keep casting without pulling enemies away. Ice Shards increases the critical strike damage bonus of Frost spells, giving crit an offensive role alongside the control tools.
Ice Barrier absorbs damage and prevents damage from interrupting or delaying your casts while it holds. Put it up before incoming pressure rather than after pushback has already ruined several casts. Ice Block protects you but prevents attacking, moving and casting for its duration; it is survival time, not damage uptime.
Cold Snap finishes the cooldowns of your other Frost spells. Decide whether the pull needs another defensive or another control use before spending it for convenience. A second Frost Nova or Ice Barrier can buy the time needed to recover a loose pack.

What changes from Classic raiding
Original Classic raid Mage was usually built around Frostbolt early and Fireball later. Fire-resistant or immune enemies in Molten Core and Blackwing Lair favored Frost, including Arcane Power/Frost builds that spent heavily in Arcane but still cast Frostbolt. A Winter's Chill Mage supplied the shared Frost crit debuff. Where Fire worked, Mages maintained Scorch and fed a shared Ignite. That raid routine was different from solo Blizzard kiting, dungeon AoE or PvP Shatter combos.
Forever adds Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage for Arcane-school damage, Hot Streak for shorter Pyroblasts, and Fingers of Frost for Frozen-target bonuses without an actual root. Scorch and Winter's Chill now describe personal bonuses. Choose your school for the enemy you are fighting; a stronger talent sequence does not bypass resistance or immunity. The old raid progression is Classic context, not a forecast that Forever encounters impose the same school choices.
Hit, crit and caster weapons
Combined melee, ranged and spell hit broadens the items worth reading, but school-specific talents remain school-specific. Arcane Focus supports Arcane; Elemental Precision supports Fire and Frost. A mixed-school build needs reliable hits on its finisher as well as its setup. Extra Arcane hit does not automatically solve a Fire spell's misses.
Combined crit matters differently across the trees. Fire gets more eligible Hot Streak triggers from direct crits, Arcane Mind improves Arcane critical damage, and Ice Shards strengthens Frost crits. Periodic crits also give burns another reason to value crit, but Hot Streak's non-periodic restriction remains intact. Judge SP, hit and crit together rather than treating every newly usable crit item as an upgrade. A crit item with mostly attack stats can still lose to a caster piece that strengthens every cast; unifying the chance stats does not make Strength or AP feed your spells. For Arcane, include the mana needed to complete Blast sequences, not just the size of a single finisher.
Caster weapons now carry spell damage and healing through leveling. Compare their casting stats instead of weapon DPS, and check a one-hander together with its off-hand. Weapon skill remains a weapon-combat mechanic, not a replacement for spell hit. Healing gear contributes one-third of its bonus healing as damage: useful when it genuinely improves your SP, but the large healing number is not the damage number you receive.
Mage races and practical advantages
Human Sword Specialization grants 2% spell and ability crit while wielding a sword. Compare that racial together with the actual weapon and off-hand stats; a sword is not automatically better than every staff. Will to Survive removes stuns, while the Spirit bonus supports regeneration rather than acting as direct SP.
Gnome Expansive Mind increases mana by 5%, not Intellect. Eureka! reduces cost and increases damage or healing on your next three abilities by 10%, which rewards choosing those casts deliberately. Escape Artist's brief root and snare immunity helps preserve distance. Alliance Skyborne offer 1% casting haste and Read Ley Line regeneration, plus extra Elemental damage; the regeneration ability requires activating a ley line.
Orc is a new Mage option. Blood Fury grants 10% AP and SP for 15 seconds, while Shatter Curse provides Curse and Bane immunity and reduced magical damage for eight seconds. Do not count Axe Specialization without actually wielding a usable axe. Troll Berserking gives 10% attack and cast speed for ten seconds, and Beast Slaying is encounter-specific damage. Undead Cannibalize restores health and mana from corpses; Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear and Sleep but no longer grants immunity afterward. Choose between repeatable casting benefits and the control break or recovery your activities reward.
Threat, utility and smaller raids
In a smaller raid, agree on interrupt and crowd-control coverage before the pull. Keep Polymorph targets outside your AoE and assign Counterspell to a specific dangerous cast. Improved Counterspell adds a silence, but landing the interrupt on the dangerous spell remains the first job. Remove Lesser Curse now removes a Curse or Bane from a friendly target, extending a familiar Classic raid duty to the new effect category.
Position so that a loose enemy travels toward the tank rather than through the healer. Frost has obvious tools for this, but Fire can daze nearby enemies and Arcane can use a planned instant cast to reposition without wasting its whole damage window. School-specific threat reductions still matter when you mix spells.
For solo play, prefer sequences that leave enough mana and control for an unexpected second enemy. In PvP, a shortened cast still exposes a casting window, a free channel still requires you to stand, and a damage proc does not outrank escaping a lethal setup. Use your control or Blink before committing to a cast you cannot safely finish.

Mage questions
Does Arcane Blast increase its own damage in Forever?
No. Its stacking effect increases the damage of your other spells while increasing Arcane Blast's mana cost. It lasts eight seconds or until another damage spell is cast. Build only as many stacks as your mana and available casting window justify, then choose the spell that spends them.
Does Hot Streak give an instant Pyroblast?
No. Eligible non-periodic crits grant stacks that reduce Pyroblast cast time by 25% each, up to three stacks. That is a 75% reduction at three stacks, not an instant cast. Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch are the listed triggers; periodic damage does not trigger it.
Can Fire and Frost spells trigger Missile Barrage?
Yes. Fireball, Frostbolt and Frostfire Bolt each have a 20% chance, compared with Arcane Blast's 40%. The proc makes the next Arcane Missiles free and halves its channel duration, with missiles firing every 0.5 seconds. It supports cross-school casting, but the resulting spell remains a stationary channel.
Is Frost only useful for leveling and PvP?
Frost also brings sustained mana and threat reduction, shields and controlled damage opportunities to group PvE. Fingers of Frost connects Chill effects to Frozen-target benefits without requiring an actual root. Its value depends on the encounter: control matters on dangerous packs, while keeping casts going and spending procs well matters on bosses.
