Destro Warlock overview

Destro suits fights where you can set up Immolate and spend the following window casting Incinerate. Its instant attacks help you finish targets and move without going idle, but a short-lived add may not repay a full setup. On two-target fights, assign Bane of Havoc to an enemy that should take damage while you attack the other; on one isolated target, it has nothing to copy.

The biggest changes from Classic

Check Immolate after Conflagrate

Shadow and Flame gives a 20% preservation chance at rank 1, 80% at rank 4 and 100% at rank 5. Below rank 5, look at the actual result rather than automatically replacing Immolate or assuming it survived.

The damage buffs cross schools

Conflagrate increases your Shadow damage; Shadowburn increases your Fire damage. Both buffs last 20 seconds through Shadow and Flame, reaching 10% at rank 5. Use the following casting window, not just the instant hit, to judge the payoff.

Mark one enemy and attack another

Bane of Havoc copies 15% of the Warlock's damage to other targets onto one marked enemy. Choose the recipient around the group's kill order, and keep it off anything that must stay controlled or stop taking damage.

Destruction Warlock

Ranged DPS

Destro combines a Fire casting core with instant Fire and Shadow attacks. Immolate enables Conflagrate and gives Incinerate 25% additional damage. Keep those dependencies working without spending more casts setting up a target than you get back before it dies.

Build your talents

Single-target casting priorities

Start with your assigned utility curse and decide which bane belongs on the target. Against a durable enemy, establish Immolate before leaning on Incinerate: the nuke deals 25% additional damage while that Immolate is up. Use Incinerate for the standing Fire casts between needed setup, instant attacks and looking after your resources. If Immolate misses or falls off, check the setup again before carrying on as if the bonus were still up.

Bring Shadowburn into a useful Fire window when you have Shadow and Flame, then spend that window landing Fire damage. Fit Conflagrate around its Immolate requirement and your preservation rank. These are decisions to make as the fight changes, not a fixed cast sequence to repeat through movement, immunity or target swaps.

On a nearly dead add, immediate damage can be worth more than applying Immolate for a sequence you will not finish. On a new durable target, rebuilding it first makes more sense. Likewise, do not refresh a healthy Immolate just because you have spare mana: that cast replaces time you could spend attacking, and early replacement can discard remaining ticks.

Conflagrate changes with your talent rank

Without Shadow and Flame, Conflagrate consumes Immolate. You trade the remaining periodic damage and the condition for Incinerate's bonus for an immediate Fire hit. Using it late in Immolate reduces the ticks you give up, but waiting is not always useful: a target about to die or leave range may need the damage now.

At rank 1, Shadow and Flame gives a 20% chance not to consume Immolate. Rank 4 raises that to 80%. Neither is a guarantee. After Conflagrate, check the debuff: if it survived, keep casting rather than overwrite it; if it was consumed and the target will live, rebuild before returning to your supported Incinerate casts.

At rank 5, the preservation chance is 100%. Remaining Immolate ticks are no longer a reason to delay Conflagrate, and a planned follow-up Immolate becomes wasted upkeep while the existing effect is still healthy. You still need Immolate on the target to use the spell. Its ten-second cooldown and the time you can actually stay in range remain relevant; preservation does not remove either constraint.

Shadowburn, cross-school buffs and shards

Hitting with Conflagrate grants the Shadow damage buff from Shadow and Flame. Hitting with Shadowburn grants the Fire damage buff. Both last 20 seconds, with 2% at rank 1, 8% at rank 4 and 10% at rank 5. In a Fire-heavy sequence, Shadowburn is the spell that strengthens the next Fire casts; Conflagrate does not buff its own school.

The buffs cover all damage of the relevant school, so count useful periodic damage as well as nukes. That does not make a school swap after every instant an automatic gain. Weigh the extra buffed damage you can fit against the cast you give up, the mana spent and any Immolate-supported Incinerate you lose. If you are about to spend the buff window running, hiding or waiting for an immune boss, casting only to start that buff has less value.

Shadowburn requires a Soul Shard. Its own effect grants a shard if a non-trivial target dies within eight seconds of being hit. Separately, Shadow and Flame gives an immediate refund chance: 20% at rank 1, 80% at rank 4 and 100% at rank 5. Budget for unrefunded casts below rank 5 instead of spending your last reserve on the assumption that every cast pays for itself. Even at rank 5, the refund does not remove the reagent requirement: keep a shard in hand to cast it.

Its 15-second cooldown is shorter than the 20-second Fire buff, leaving room to refresh during sustained access to the target. That timing is useful, not an order to spend it blindly on cooldown. Keep shards available for the summons and other shard-consuming jobs your group expects.

Bane of Havoc target assignment

Bane of Havoc lasts five minutes and copies 15% of all damage done by the Warlock to other targets onto the marked enemy. Only one target can carry your Havoc, and only one of your banes can be active on each target. The marked enemy gives up your other bane there; your actively attacked target can have a different bane.

When an add must die quickly but the boss should keep taking damage, mark the boss and put your casts into the add. For two durable enemies, mark the one you are not actively attacking. If the raid changes targets, reconsider the assignment: continuing to cast only at the Havoc target provides no other-target damage for it to copy.

Do not mark a controlled enemy, an add that must stay above a health threshold or a boss during a damage-stop instruction. A long duration makes the mark easy to forget when the encounter changes. Havoc should support the kill plan, not redirect damage into a target your group is trying to preserve.

On one isolated boss, use your appropriate single-target bane instead. The tooltip specifies damage done by the Warlock; do not count pet damage as guaranteed copied damage when choosing the mark or comparing demon options.

Shadow Bolt and mixed-school builds

Improved Shadow Bolt now increases Shadow damage the target takes from your attacks for 12 seconds after your Shadow Bolt crits; rank 1 gives 4%. This is a personal benefit, not the original Classic four-charge Shadow vulnerability shared by damage sources hitting the target. Do not build a group assignment around supplying that old debuff.

The talent has a clearer use when you regularly cast Shadow Bolt and follow it with your own Shadow damage. In a Fire-heavy fight, filling the opening row with it simply because Classic raid builds did so can spend points on an effect you rarely trigger or exploit. Bane instead shortens Shadow Bolt, Immolate, Incinerate and Soul Fire casts, while Destructive Reach extends your damaging spell range.

If sustained Shadow effects and drains are the attacks you want to emphasize, compare the Affliction guide. If the demon and sacrifice choice are driving your build, use the Demonology guide. Keep your chosen spells and supporting talents aligned rather than treating every unlocked spell as mandatory upkeep.

Damage, mana and defensive talent choices

Incinerate requires Bane of Havoc, while Conflagrate no longer has a prerequisite of its own in the beta trees; it is reached by row investment rather than a named talent. Plan those routes alongside the rank of Shadow and Flame you intend to play. Its fifth point changes both preservation and immediate shard refunds from likely to guaranteed, which changes your routine casts as well as your damage bonuses.

Ruin increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Destruction spells; its rank 1 bonus is 20%, not 20% more total damage on every crit. Agonizing Flames increases damage from all your Destruction spells while also increasing Searing Pain's crit chance. Fire and Brimstone specifically improves Conflagrate's crit chance, while Aftermath improves Immolate's initial hit and adds a chance for Conflagrate to daze. Compare those narrower effects with the spells you actually cast.

Cataclysm reduces Destruction mana costs. Molten Skin reduces damage taken, and Intensity helps against damage-induced casting and channeling interruption. They solve different problems: running dry, dying and losing casts to incoming hits. A stationary fight with little incoming damage asks different things of your spare points than solo play or PvP. Early Affliction also offers Improved Life Tap for more mana per tap and Suppression for all-school hit and threat reduction.

Mana, Life Tap and threat

Prepare mana before a stretch where you can stand still and cast. Use safe movement or gaps between pulls for Life Tap rather than waiting until you are empty in the middle of a useful Fire window. Check health first: an incoming hit, a healer under pressure or a dangerous movement mechanic can make the tap more costly than the cast it funds. Improved Life Tap increases mana awarded, but it does not turn the health bar into a resource you can ignore.

If you are tapping more than expected, look for consumed Immolates, unnecessary refreshes and instant attacks used before long downtime. Cataclysm helps the mana bill; cutting casts that do not repay their setup helps too. A preserved Immolate is a reason not to spend another cast replacing it.

Give the tank time to establish threat before committing a burst or spreading area damage. Suppression applies to all your threat, with 4% reduction and 1% hit at rank 1. Destructive Reach grants range, not a threat reduction. More range gives you positioning options; it does not make opening damage safe on an enemy the tank has barely touched. See the Warlock group-play advice for shared curse, demon and control responsibilities.

Safe AoE in dungeons

Start with the tank's pull and crowd-control plan. Keep Rain of Fire and Hellfire away from targets meant to remain controlled, and wait until the pack is held where your damage will land. Use focused damage instead when one dangerous enemy needs to die first or the tank is still collecting the pack. Havoc also needs a safe recipient before you use it to add damage during an AoE pull.

Rain of Fire lets you work at range; Hellfire puts you near the pack and spends your own health. Do not combine low-health tapping with a committed Hellfire channel while enemies or environmental damage are already hitting you. Stop the channel when the spot turns unsafe instead of treating its remaining duration as something you have to finish.

Intensity can help preserve Destruction casts under damage, but it does not make tanking a loose enemy safe. Pyroclasm gives Rain of Fire and Hellfire a stun chance over their duration. That is not a guaranteed stun on the next tick, so keep the group's real control and interrupts available rather than relying on it to stop a dangerous cast.

Hit, crit and Fire-heavy gear choices

Count your selected Suppression rank when evaluating hit gear: it helps Fire casts as well as Shadow spells. Reliable Immolate application matters to both the next Incinerate and access to Conflagrate. A crit-heavy swap is less attractive if losing hit leaves you repeatedly rebuilding missed setup.

Compare spell power with crit through your actual damage mix. Ruin makes crits more valuable for Destruction spells, while Fire and Brimstone only changes Conflagrate's crit chance. Neither establishes a universal crit-over-SP rule. Fire-only damage gear favors the Fire core; general spell damage also supports Shadowburn and any Shadow casts or effects you are using.

Forever combines spell, melee and ranged hit on gear, and does the same for crit. Weapon DPS and weapon skill still do not add to your spell damage or spell hit. Compare caster weapons for their actual spell stats, and count only one-third of a healing item's bonus healing as its added damage contribution. Keep enough health for incoming damage and planned taps rather than discarding Stamina solely because it is not a damage stat. For racial cooldowns and weapon-dependent bonuses, see Warlock races.

Movement and PvP casting windows

Position for more than the next cast. Destructive Reach can let you begin damage sooner and move less as the target shifts. When you must move, a ready Conflagrate on an Immolated target or Shadowburn can deal immediate damage without starting another hard cast. Below rank 5 Shadow and Flame, spending Conflagrate while moving can leave you needing a new Immolate once you stop.

In PvP, create space with your team's control and demon utility before committing to Immolate and Incinerate. Keep your pet from chasing into a position where you cannot support it. If the target repeatedly breaks line of sight, avoid beginning a setup that requires more time exposed than you have. Save enough health and mana to survive the response rather than tap aggressively just to force one more nuke.

Aftermath can give Conflagrate a daze; rank 1 has a 20% chance to slow the target by 50% for five seconds. Treat that rank as an opportunity when it procs, not a dependable escape button. Intensity addresses interruption caused by damage, not immunity to enemy interrupt abilities or silences. A successful cast window still depends on spacing, control and watching the opponent.

Common Destruction mistakes

  • Check whether Immolate survived Conflagrate below rank 5 Shadow and Flame instead of assuming it was consumed or preserved.
  • Use Shadowburn to prepare Fire damage and Conflagrate to prepare Shadow damage, not the reverse.
  • Keep a shard available even with a guaranteed refund, and preserve a larger reserve when refunds are still a chance.
  • Attack another enemy after placing Bane of Havoc; reconsider the mark when kill orders or damage-stop calls change.
  • Do not refresh every effect on an add that will die before the setup pays back.
  • Do not treat Improved Shadow Bolt as the old group debuff or Intensity as interrupt immunity.

Destro Warlock questions

Does Conflagrate always consume Immolate in Forever?

No. It consumes Immolate without Shadow and Flame, but that talent gives a preservation chance of 20% at rank 1, 80% at rank 4 and 100% at rank 5. At rank 5 you no longer sacrifice remaining ticks or remove Incinerate's Immolate condition by using Conflagrate.

Does Bane of Havoc help on a single boss?

Not when there is no other target to damage. Bane of Havoc copies your damage to other enemies onto its marked target. Attacking only the marked boss gives it nothing to copy, while using Havoc there also occupies your one-bane slot on that target.

Does rank 5 Shadow and Flame remove Shadowburn's shard requirement?

It gives a 100% chance to immediately refund a shard, not permission to cast without one. Shadowburn still lists a Soul Shard reagent. Its separate shard gain when a non-trivial target dies within eight seconds is not the immediate refund mechanic.

Should every Conflagrate be followed by Shadow Bolt?

No. The Shadow buff from Shadow and Flame can help your Shadow damage, but it does not prove that switching away from Immolate-supported Incinerate is worth the cast. Consider your talents, existing Shadow effects and the remaining damage window instead of forcing a school swap after every instant.

Does Fire and Brimstone make spells hit extra targets?

No. Forever's Fire and Brimstone increases Conflagrate's critical strike chance, with 8% at rank 1. Your separate-target damage tool is Bane of Havoc; the talent name does not give you a later-expansion AoE toggle.
