WoW Forever Hunter Guide: BM, MM, & Surv Changes
Hunter can build around its pet, take Lone Wolf for petless damage, or commit to melee Survival. Beast Mastery adds summoned hawks and mana sustain, Marksmanship gains Sniper Shot and Serpent Sting support, and Survival links marked-target attacks to Mongoose Bite and bleeds.
What changes for Hunter?
Pick Hunter for ranged damage with pet or petless options, or for the new sustained-melee Survival style. Classic raid Hunters built around Auto Shot, Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot; skilled players could weave Raptor Strike between shots, so melee attacks were not just escape tools. Forever goes further with Strider Kick, attack-triggered Mongoose Bite and Lacerating Strikes. Beast Mastery rewards pet uptime and hawk timing, while Marksmanship offers Lone Wolf and a four-second Sniper Shot. Shared hit supports both damage and traps, and Careful Aim gives Intellect an AP return. Choose talents for the attacks and pet state you will actually use: ranged-only bonuses do not improve melee strikes.

The biggest changes from Classic
- Hawks share Arcane Shot
Summon Hawk adds an 18-second attacker, with no more than two active, and shares its six-second cooldown with Arcane Shot. Choose the hawk when the target will survive long enough for its continued attacks.
- Petless damage becomes explicit
Lone Wolf increases damage with all attacks by 20% while you have no active pet. Compare that bonus with the pet damage, control and solo tanking you give up; encounters with poor pet access favor the petless option.
- Mongoose Bite starts bleeds
Expose Prey lets attacks against a marked target activate Mongoose Bite, and Lacerating Strikes adds a 21-second bleed based on the bite's damage. Survival can build offense around attacking the enemy rather than needing the enemy to attack you first.
Beast Mastery Hunter
Pet-focused DPS
Beast Mastery puts more of your decisions into pet uptime, hawk timing and keeping mana flowing. Its aspect talents support either ranged or melee auto attacks, while the deepest cooldown remains centered on your main pet.
Build your talentsChoose hawks or Arcane Shot
Summon Hawk deals an initial physical hit and continues attacking for 18 seconds. Its six-second cooldown is shared with Arcane Shot, and only two hawks can be active. A durable target gives the hawk time to keep attacking; a nearly dead add may die before most of that damage lands.
Unleashed Fury and Ferocity explicitly improve pets and hawks. Frenzy and Bestial Wrath describe your pet only, so their text does not establish the same bonuses for hawks. Improved Arcane Shot explicitly excludes abilities sharing Arcane Shot's cooldown and does not shorten Summon Hawk's own cooldown.
Pet uptime is personal damage
Focused Fire improves all damage you deal while your pet is active. A dead pet therefore costs you more than its attacks. Endurance Training adds pet health and armor, Improved Mend Pet cuts its mana cost and gives each heal a chance to cleanse a harmful effect, and Improved Revive Pet makes recovery less punishing. These are practical dungeon and progression talents, especially when your pet must cross dangerous ground.
Bestial Swiftness helps recover damage after target changes. Intimidation still needs the pet's next successful attack: send the pet early enough that the stun arrives when needed, not after a loose mob has already reached the healer. The empowered attack gains increased crit chance and high threat, making it useful for solo control but something to handle carefully around tank pickup.
Aspects, mana and burst timing
Classic Aspect of the Beast made you untrackable without adding damage. Forever's rank 1 also grants 50 melee AP. Deadly Aspects adds a melee attack-speed proc from auto attacks while that aspect is active, alongside its ranged attack-speed proc under Aspect of the Hawk. Use the aspect matching your attack style. Improved Aspect of the Monkey also shares part of its dodge benefit with your pet when you need physical defense.
Bestial Discipline improves pet Focus regeneration and lets some of your mana regeneration continue while casting. Bestial Wrath retains Classic's 50% pet damage increase for 18 seconds on a two-minute cooldown. Use it when your pet can keep attacking for the full duration.
Marksmanship Hunter
Ranged DPS
Marksmanship emphasizes ranged weapon damage, deliberate cast windows and a choice between pet support and Lone Wolf. Careful Aim and the Serpent Sting mana talents make Intellect and target preparation relevant to more than your mana bar.
Build your talentsLone Wolf and pet uptime
Lone Wolf grants 20% increased damage with all attacks while no pet is active. Poor pet access favors it; solo elites are often easier with a pet holding the target. Compare the personal bonus with the pet damage and control you lose.
The bonus includes melee attacks, but Mortal Shots improves ranged critical-strike damage, Ranged Weapon Specialization improves ranged weapon damage, and Barrage names Multi-Shot, Aimed Shot and Volley. A melee build can use Lone Wolf without benefiting from those ranged-only talents. Focused Fire requires an active pet, so it cannot apply at the same time as Lone Wolf.
Aimed Shot, Multi-Shot and Sniper Shot
Classic Aimed Shot had a three-second cast and shared its cooldown with Arcane Shot. Forever's rank-3 Aimed Shot has a two-second cast and six-second cooldown shared with Multi-Shot. That changes the shot choice: using Aimed Shot now delays your Multi-Shot rather than Arcane Shot. Barrage improves both abilities, plus Volley, even though Aimed Shot is no longer a talent purchase.
Sniper Shot adds a four-second base cast, a 15-second cooldown and an 8–35 yard range. Start it when you have a clear firing lane and enough time before the next forced movement. Hawk Eye improves ranged weapon range, giving you more room to choose that position.
Keep Multi-Shot and Volley off controlled targets. Scatter Shot disorients for four seconds and turns off your attack, but existing DoTs and allied damage can still break it.
Turn Serpent Sting into sustain
Classic raid damage centered on Auto Shot, Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot; Serpent Sting lacked ranged-AP scaling and competed for one of 16 debuff slots. Forever gives the sting a mana role through Rapid Recuperation as well as damage support through Improved Stings and critting DoTs.
Rapid Recuperation grants regeneration while casting for 15 seconds when Serpent Sting hits, plus a separate regeneration effect when you consume Rapid Killing. Rapid Killing reduces Rapid Fire's cooldown and can activate when you kill a non-trivial enemy or one dies with your Serpent Sting on it, empowering your next shot within 20 seconds. Apply Serpent Sting to a target that will live through its damage; on a boss without adds, the sting-triggered regeneration remains useful without kill procs.
Careful Aim converts Intellect into AP, while Efficiency lowers costs for shots, stings and melee abilities. Improved Stings also reduces Viper Sting's cooldown and extends Scorpid Sting's duration; those are separate benefits from its Serpent Sting damage increase.
Survival Hunter
Melee DPS and control
Classic Survival supported ranged builds with talents such as Lightning Reflexes alongside traps and defensive melee tools. Forever adds a sustained melee sequence through Strider Kick, marked-target Mongoose Bite activations and bleeds.
Build your talentsMark, bite and bleed
Classic Mongoose Bite required you to dodge. Expose Prey adds a new route: your attacks against a target with Hunter's Mark can activate Mongoose Bite for five seconds. Keep the mark on your melee target and react to that window. You can now use the bite against a tanked boss without first taking attacks yourself.
Lacerating Strikes makes Mongoose Bite cause a bleed over 21 seconds equal to 40% of the bite's damage. Long-lived targets give that damage time to run; repeated swaps onto dying enemies lose bleed uptime. Strider Kick adds an instant attack for 100% melee weapon damage on an eight-second cooldown. Classic already had the non-reactive Raptor Strike; the new strike and proc-driven bites expand melee offense rather than introducing Hunter's first proactive melee attack.
Weapons and melee crit
Savage Strikes improves crit chance for all melee abilities. Predator's Edge improves melee critical-strike damage and offhand weapon damage. Classic Hunters could already dual wield, but the new offhand bonus specifically rewards sustained melee use. Compare a two-hander's strike damage with the swings and offhand benefit of two weapons, using the actual weapons available.
Counterattack remains a parry-triggered attack with a five-second root and now includes weapon damage. Deflection and Deterrence help activate it when you are under melee pressure. Against a tanked boss, stay behind the target and use Expose Prey for bites instead of taking attacks to trigger defensive abilities.
Traps and mana between strikes
Resourcefulness reduces trap and melee ability costs, while your critical strikes can activate mana regeneration during casting. Surefooted adds hit and shortens movement impairments, helping you stay in melee range.
Entrapment now roots affected targets when your traps trigger, replacing Classic's chance-based root. Clever Traps improves Freezing and Frost Trap duration and Immolation and Explosive Trap damage. Survivalist's Discipline reduces trap and Deterrence cooldowns, while Survival Tactics improves hit for traps and Feign Death. Classic trap placement required leaving combat, often through Feign Death; cooldown and hit talents alone do not establish a new in-combat placement rule. Before the pull, place control on the enemy's approach and keep damaging traps away from breakable crowd control.

Shared hit, crit and weapon choices
Combined melee, ranged and spell hit lets Hunter damage gear improve trap reliability too. Ranged and melee builds gain control benefits from the same stat they use offensively, though attacks and traps retain their own miss rules. Survival Tactics still specifically improves traps and Feign Death.
Combined crit and critting DoTs extend a crit item's usefulness to Serpent Sting, Lacerating Strikes and damaging trap ticks. Give stings and bleeds time to run on durable kill targets, and keep them off enemies assigned to breakable control. Periodic damage does not establish extra talent procs by itself. Lethal Attacks grants broad attack crit; Mortal Shots improves ranged critical-strike damage specifically.
Ranged builds should prioritize their ranged weapon and compare equipped melee weapons for stats and racial conditions. Survival deals damage with those melee weapons: Strider Kick uses weapon damage and Predator's Edge improves the offhand. Careful Aim gives Intellect an AP return, but compare that return with the weapon damage or other offensive stats a swap would lose.
Weapon skill remains part of physical gearing, with smaller bonuses per item. Compare the complete weapon and gear set rather than retaining an old skill item regardless of its other stats. Caster-oriented quest weapons are useful only if their weapon damage and stats suit your build.
Hunter races and racial cooldowns
Human Hunter is a new Alliance option. Sword Specialization grants spell and ability crit while wielding a sword, and Will to Survive removes stuns. That creates a weapon-and-utility choice rather than the old habit of selecting a race solely for weapon skill. Night Elf offers Elune's Light for a timed crit window, plus movement from Quickness; line the offensive cooldown up with a window when you can keep attacking.
Dwarf pairs Stoneform's bleed, poison and disease immunity with reduced physical damage taken, while Big Game Hunter increases damage against Beasts. Find Treasure can coexist with other tracking, so it need not displace the creature tracking used by Improved Tracking. Do not choose a mace just because Dwarf has Mace Specialization: racial bonuses do not teach weapon proficiencies.
For Horde, Orc Blood Fury increases AP and SP for 15 seconds, with an axe-equipped crit passive and shorter stuns through Hardiness. Tauren combines health and hit through Endurance with War Stomp for close-range control. Troll has attack and cast speed through Berserking and bonus Beast damage. Skyborne adds passive haste and 5% increased damage against Elemental creatures on either faction, with faction-specific recovery or movement utility. Elemental Insight follows the target's creature type, not whether you use a physical shot or a magic attack. Match the active tools to your ranged, melee or solo plan; personal racial stats are not automatically pet stats.
Raid utility, control and solo play
Trueshot Aura grants ranged AP to party members within 45 yards. Classic's aura improved both melee and ranged AP, making it useful in Warrior and Rogue groups. Forever's version instead favors party members who use ranged AP.
Agree which enemy you will trap before the pull and keep stings, bleeds and pet attacks off it. Improved Tracking rewards matching the creature type you are fighting; switch tracking when the enemy type changes.
For solo play, Beast Mastery provides a pet to hold enemies, Mend Pet for recovery and Spirit Bond for passive health regeneration while the pet is active. Lone Wolf trades those benefits for personal damage, leaving you to create distance with movement and control. Survival can keep dealing melee damage when an enemy closes, with Deflection, Deterrence and Counterattack helping against physical pressure.

Hunter questions
Is melee Survival a real Hunter option in WoW Forever?
Yes. Strider Kick supplies an instant weapon strike, Expose Prey activates Mongoose Bite through attacks against a marked target, and Lacerating Strikes adds a bleed. Melee crit, offhand damage and mana talents support the approach. You still use traps and positioning; Counterattack remains a defensive reaction rather than a reason to face-tank bosses.
Should a Marksmanship Hunter dismiss their pet for Lone Wolf?
Use Lone Wolf when its petless play suits the encounter and your build. Its 20% attack damage bonus replaces the value you would get from an active pet, including damage, control and solo tanking. It also conflicts with effects requiring a pet, such as Focused Fire. Difficult pet access favors considering it; dangerous solo targets favor retaining help.
Does Improved Arcane Shot reduce Summon Hawk's cooldown?
No. Improved Arcane Shot explicitly excludes abilities that share Arcane Shot's cooldown. Summon Hawk has its own six-second cooldown while sharing the cooldown relationship with Arcane Shot. You choose between them rather than freely stacking both, and the two-hawk limit remains important when deciding when to summon again.
Does Trueshot Aura still buff melee attack power?
The Forever talent grants ranged attack power to party members within 45 yards. Classic Trueshot Aura supplied both melee and ranged AP, so the change affects party planning. Its strongest group use is with ranged AP users; do not count it as the same melee support buff simply because the name and radius are familiar.
