WoW Forever Paladin Guide: Holy, Prot, & Ret Changes
Protection gains a taunt and mana returns from tanking, Holy connects its smaller heals to faster Holy Lights, and Ret gains Holy Strike alongside seals that survive Judgement. These changes address different problems in Classic Paladin play: losing aggro without a taunt, running dry during a pull, and having no active weapon strike.
What changes for Paladin?
If you liked the Paladin toolkit but wanted to tank or DPS rather than heal in raids, Forever gives you more to work with. Protection can recover loose mobs and sustain mana while being attacked. Ret adds Holy Strike to its seal-and-Judgement rotation. Holy keeps efficient single-target healing, with more frequent Holy Shocks and a new party heal, but a smaller Illumination refund. Mobility, ranged pressure and interrupts remain weaknesses; blessings, defensive cooldowns and Cleanse remain reasons to bring a Paladin.

The biggest changes from Classic
- Judgement keeps your seal
Judging no longer consumes your active seal. That removes a recurring recast from the melee rhythm, while Sacred Arbiter refreshes Judgement effects through Holy Strike. Seal swaps become a choice about their effects and twisting, not upkeep after every Judgement.
- Tanking feeds your mana
Improved Seal of Fury restores mana when the seal's absorb shield is used up, and Shield Specialization adds mana returns from blocks. Seal of Fury also turns Judgement into a taunt. These returns help most while you're actively being attacked.
- Hit and crit help both damage types
Shared hit and crit benefit Ret's weapon attacks and Holy spells together. Champion of the Light also turns Intellect into spell damage and healing, making it useful for more than a larger mana pool.
Holy Paladin
Healer / Holy damage
Holy gains faster follow-up heals, a shorter Holy Shock cooldown and targeted party healing. Illumination refunds less mana than in Classic, while Reverence adds Spirit regeneration during casting.
Build your talentsCrit now changes your next cast
Classic Holy relied heavily on Flash of Light, choosing different ranks of it and Holy Light to match incoming damage and available mana. Infusion of Light adds a connection between those spells: a Holy Shock or Flash of Light crit shortens your next Holy Light. At two points, it takes a second off the cast.
If the tank is about to take another heavy swing, a ready Infusion lets you land the bigger heal sooner. The proc lasts 15 seconds, so you can hold it for incoming damage rather than immediately casting Holy Light into a nearly full health bar.
Holy Shock's 10-second cooldown gives you more frequent instant healing while moving. In Classic it was an inefficient emergency or movement heal; Forever also lets its crits prepare a faster Holy Light once you can stand still again.
Illumination and mana regeneration
Classic Illumination could refund the full base mana cost of a qualifying crit heal. Forever's Illumination returns half the base cost when it procs, including qualifying Light's Vigil heals. Crit still helps your mana, but no longer pays back the entire base cost.
Reverence supplies a different source of mana: at rank 3, 30% of Spirit-based regeneration continues while casting. Classic Holy had no equivalent talent, so Spirit was much less useful during sustained casting. Intellect still increases your mana pool, and Divine Intellect increases your total Intellect.
For long fights, match your heal to the damage and keep an efficient cast available alongside the larger Holy Light. Infusion improves cast time; it doesn't reduce that Holy Light's mana cost.
Party healing with Light's Vigil
Light's Vigil gives you a prepared party heal. Put it on a friendly target, then trigger it with Holy Shock; that Shock triggers no cooldown and the target heals their party. The mark lasts 30 seconds, letting you set it up before an incoming damage event.
The enemy version refunds 75% of Light's Vigil's mana cost, but the friendly party-healing effect does not. For healing, pick the party that will take damage and have Holy Shock ready to trigger it. Only one Light's Vigil can be active per Paladin, per party.
In a dungeon, that party is the whole group. In a raid, the heal is limited to the marked ally's subgroup, so your target determines which players it can help.
Holy damage and PvP
Consecration is baseline rather than an 11-point Holy talent, giving every spec access without that investment. Consecrated Ground increases your Holy spell damage against the first four enemies that enter it. Holy Shock and Holy Strike give a damage-minded Holy build single-target attacks alongside that ground AoE.
Healing gear also grants bonus damage equal to a third of its bonus healing. A dungeon healing upgrade can therefore help your questing spells, even when the item's main purpose is healing. A dedicated damage build can still favor different talents and stats.
Voice of Truth gives six seconds of immunity to silences and interrupts. In PvP, use it when you need to finish a heal through an enemy's interrupt window. It doesn't protect against stuns or prevent a target from moving out of range.
Protection Paladin
Tank
Protection gains a seal-dependent taunt, mana returns from absorbs and blocks, and an absorb cooldown. Its Holy damage still provides threat, now with fewer interruptions to drink and better ways to recover a loose target.
Build your talentsA taunt with a seal attached
Seal of Fury makes Judgement taunt while the seal is active. Classic Protection had no taunt: regaining a loose mob depended on threat, a stun or a blessing to protect its target. Forever gives you a way to force a tauntable enemy back onto you.
If you swap away from Fury, Judgement loses that taunt effect. Keep Fury active when a loose mob or tank swap is likely. Swift Judgement resets Judgement's cooldown and makes the next cast free, giving you another attempt if the first taunt misses.
Swift Judgement has a one-minute cooldown. Saving it for a missed taunt or a second loose enemy can be more useful than spending it for another damage cast at the start of a stable pull.
Mana from absorbs and blocks
Improved Seal of Fury restores mana when the seal's absorb shield is fully used. Shield Specialization gives blocks a chance to restore mana, with a three-second limit on how often that return can happen. Holy Shield increases block chance, connecting a defensive ability to the mana needed for your threat spells.
Those returns depend on incoming attacks. They're useful while actively tanking, but won't fund your spells in the same way while running between packs or waiting as an off-tank. That differs from Classic, where Protection relied heavily on its mana pool, Wisdom effects and consumables to sustain threat.
Forever's Holy Shield gives 20% block chance, compared with 30% on the Classic spell, and still has four charges. Several attackers can use those charges quickly, so the extra mana tools don't remove the need to watch your defensive coverage.
Timing Holy Strike for mitigation
Iron Creed adds threat to Holy Strike and, while Righteous Fury is active, gives it a six-second damage-reduction effect. You can time the strike before a dangerous swing or ability rather than use it only for threat.
Baseline Holy Strike has a 12-second cooldown, leaving a gap between those six-second windows. Improved Holy Strike in Holy shortens the cooldown, at the cost of points you could spend elsewhere in a 51-point build.
Classic Reckoning triggered only after you took a critical strike. Forever also allows blocks to trigger extra attacks. Its new block trigger remains useful when your defensive gear prevents enemy crits.
Consecration and defensive cooldowns
Consecration is baseline at level 20 and deals its highest damage and threat to the first four targets, with reduced output beyond them. For dungeon pulls, collect enemies on that ground effect and arrange interrupts or crowd control for casters that won't follow. Larger pulls add incoming damage without giving every enemy the same Consecration threat as a four-target pack.
Templar's Bulwark absorbs damage equal to your maximum health for eight seconds. It applies one minute of Forbearance and cannot be used during Forbearance, so plan it alongside Divine Shield and Blessing of Protection rather than expecting to chain them freely.
Protection still lacks a dedicated interrupt. Hammer of Justice can stop a stunnable caster, but your group needs another answer when an important cast comes from a stun-immune target.
Retribution Paladin
Melee DPS
Ret adds Holy Strike to its melee rotation, keeps seals after Judgement and gains Echo-based seal twisting. Shared hit and crit also make gear more useful across its Physical and Holy damage.
Build your talentsHoly Strike and seal upkeep
Classic Ret used auto-attacks with Seal of Command or Righteousness, Judgement, and Consecration as mana allowed, with Hammer of Wrath during execute range and extra spells against Undead or Demons. It had no active melee strike. Forever adds Holy Strike at level 6 and no longer consumes your seal when you Judge.
Sacred Arbiter makes Holy Strike refresh all Judgement effects on the target. Staying in melee therefore maintains those debuffs while dealing damage, without repeatedly judging a utility seal. Vindication also lets damaging melee attacks reduce the enemy's AP and increase your own.
Vengeance changes from Classic's eight-second crit-triggered damage bonus to a 30-second buff that stacks up to five times. It takes several crits to build, favoring sustained combat, but the longer duration makes it easier to carry stacks through brief movement or between nearby enemies.
Seal twisting with Echoes
Twist of Light gives you an Echo when you replace Command, Righteousness, Fury or Justice with a different seal. Your next melee attack applies the replaced seal's effect and consumes the Echo. That gives you two seal effects on the attack without having to land the swap in a tiny pre-swing window.
Choose the seal you want to keep active and the effect you want to carry into the next attack. The extra seal cast still costs mana and a global cooldown, competing with Holy Strike, Judgement and support spells.
Twist of Light requires 31 points in Ret. Holy Shock now requires 21 points in Holy, so you cannot take both in a 51-point build. Echo twisting and a Holy Shock-based damage build are separate options.
Gearing for melee and Holy damage
Ret benefits directly from combining spell, melee and ranged hit on gear: one hit bonus helps both its weapon attacks and its spells. Shared crit likewise benefits both sides of its damage, making hybrid drops easier to use than separate melee-crit and spell-crit items.
Champion of the Light adds spell damage and healing based on Intellect. An Intellect-bearing item can therefore improve Holy damage as well as mana capacity. Strength, weapon damage and the rest of the item's stats still matter when comparing it with a melee upgrade.
Conviction continues to specify melee crit; the combined gear stat doesn't broaden that talent to all spells. Weapon skill also retains its old mechanics, but smaller weapon-skill bonuses per item mean Classic's preferred weapon-skill pieces need to be compared with the revised alternatives.
Threat, enemy types and PvP
Instrument of Law reduces threat while Righteous Fury is off. Keep Righteous Fury off when DPSing so the talent can reduce threat from your added Holy damage as well as your melee attacks.
Crusade gives extra damage against Undead and Demons, on top of its general bonus. Those enemies also let you use Exorcism and Holy Wrath. Against other creature types, you have fewer ranged damage options.
In PvP, Holy Strike makes time in melee more productive, but you still need to reach and stay on the target. Pursuit of Justice and Blessing of Freedom help with movement; Hammer of Justice and Repentance create attack windows. Ret still lacks a reliable slow and a dedicated interrupt, so coordinate control with your partner rather than relying on damage alone to stop a caster.

Hit, crit and the new gearing choices
Combined hit benefits Ret's mixed damage and Protection's attacks and seal-dependent Judgement taunt. Holy damage builds also gain melee reliability from gear that previously supplied spell hit alone. Sharing a stat does not give every action the same miss chance, so separate attack and spell requirements still matter.
For Protection, compare that reliability with the health and mitigation on the competing item. Seal of Fury favors fast weapons, which offer more swings to trigger its small absorb shields. Improved Seal of Fury then restores mana when those shields are used up.
Periodic damage can crit in Forever, giving crit another use for sustained Consecration damage. Keep enemies in the area long enough to take its ticks; placing it just before a pack dies or moves away wastes much of the cast.
Bonus healing now includes a third as much bonus damage, while caster weapons gain spell damage and healing. Those changes make healing upgrades more useful while questing and give Holy more relevant weapon rewards during leveling. Revised dungeon drops also mean the old Classic gear lists won't cover all your options.
Human, Dwarf or Undead?
Undead Paladins bring the class to Horde, letting Horde groups combine Paladin blessings and saves with Shaman support. Alliance gains that combination through Dwarf Shaman. Paladin utility is no longer restricted to an Alliance roster.
Human Sword Specialization gives spell-and-ability crit while wielding a sword, replacing the old sword-skill bonus. It can benefit Holy spells as well as Ret's attacks. Human Spirit works with Holy's new Reverence talent, while Will to Survive removes stuns. Compare the sword bonus with the full stats of a competing weapon rather than ruling out other weapon types.
Dwarf gains spell-and-ability crit while using a mace. Stoneform reduces Physical damage and removes bleeds, poisons and diseases, making it useful against physical pressure for any spec. Big Game Hunter adds damage against Beasts.
Undead's Will of the Forsaken removes fear, charm and sleep, but no longer grants immunity afterward. Cannibalize restores mana as well as health between pulls, while Touch of the Grave gives attacks a chance to drain life. Choose around the weapons, enemy types and control effects relevant to your play. See the full racial abilities for each condition and active effect.
Blessings and group roles
Blessing of Kings is baseline instead of requiring 11 points in Protection. Holy and Ret could already reach it in Classic, but no longer have to divert those points to bring the buff.
An additional Paladin can still provide another blessing: Classic's one-blessing-per-Paladin restriction is why groups coordinated Might, Wisdom, Salvation and Kings across several Paladins. In a smaller raid, you also need to fill the actual tanking, healing and damage roles. Forever's changes let those Paladins cover more of those jobs instead of concentrating them in healing slots.
Blessing of Freedom can restore a teammate's uptime, Blessing of Protection can save a player from physical attacks, and Cleanse removes harmful effects. Using them costs attack or healing globals, so watch for moments when a save or dispel is worth more than your next damage cast.
For leveling and dungeons, baseline Consecration, an early melee strike and damage from healing gear make it easier to move between solo play and group roles. The Legacy tree can further help with travel and class upkeep; its points are separate from your 51 combat talent points.

Paladin questions
Can Paladins taunt in WoW Forever?
Yes. While Seal of Fury is active, Judgement taunts. Swift Judgement resets its cooldown and makes the next Judgement free, giving Protection a recovery option if the first attempt fails. The seal condition matters: Judgement is not an unconditional taunt with every seal.
Is Retribution better than Classic Ret?
Ret gains an active melee strike in Holy Strike, seals that survive Judgement, automatic Judgement refreshes through Sacred Arbiter and Echo-based seal twisting. Shared hit and crit better support its mixed damage. It still needs melee uptime and help against kiting, without a reliable slow or dedicated interrupt.
Does Holy still spam Flash of Light?
Flash of Light remains an efficient small heal, but its crits now prepare faster Holy Lights through Infusion of Light. Holy Shock is available more often, and Light's Vigil adds a party heal. Illumination refunds half the base mana cost on a successful proc, compared with the full base cost in Classic.
Can you play a Horde Paladin in Forever?
Yes. Undead is a Paladin option, letting Horde groups combine Paladin blessings and defensive utility with Shaman support. Undead brings Will of the Forsaken, mana-restoring Cannibalize and Touch of the Grave, giving you a different set of tools from Human or Dwarf.
