Assassination Rogue Overview & Changes - WoW Forever Guide
Assassination Rogue in WoW Forever gains a two-weapon builder in Mutilate and a poison-buff finisher in Venom. Keep a poison on the target, build combo points, then choose between stronger poison pressure, faster melee attacks and a damage finisher.
Assassination Rogue overview
Choose Assassination if you want to manage poison uptime alongside weapon damage. Seal Fate and Relentless Strikes can change how fast you reach the next finisher, so watch your points and energy instead of repeating a fixed number of builders.

The biggest changes from Classic
- A coating is not a target debuff
Mutilate hits harder against poisoned enemies. Instant Poison deals immediate damage; coating both weapons with it does not leave a lasting poison effect on the target.
- Venom strengthens later attacks
Venom is a self-buff to poison damage and application chance. It spends points without landing an immediate hit, so it competes with Slice and Dice and damage finishers.
- Both weapons contribute
Mutilate strikes with both weapons. An off-hand upgrade can improve the builder itself as well as your ordinary melee damage; do not compare off-hands by poison applications alone.
Assassination Rogue
Melee DPS and poison pressure
Assassination adds poison-buff upkeep on top of Classic's energy and finisher management. Spend on sustained buffs when more attacks are coming, direct damage when a kill is close, and control when stopping the enemy matters more than another damage finisher.
Build your talentsEstablish a poison effect before sustained Mutilates
Mutilate costs 60 energy, attacks with both weapons and awards two combo points. It deals 20% more damage to poisoned targets. After a target swap or a dispel, check the enemy's debuffs instead of assuming your equipped coatings guarantee the bonus. Deadly Poison leaves a periodic poison; Instant Poison's immediate damage does not provide that lasting condition on its own.
You do not need a full poison stack before every builder. Neither Mutilate nor Venom consumes poison stacks, so keep attacking while applications establish the debuff.
A poison-immune enemy cannot supply the poisoned-target bonus. Your two weapon strikes still matter there, but poison-damage talents and Venom have less to contribute. Do not burn a finisher refreshing a poison buff solely for an enemy your poisons cannot affect.
Choose Venom, Slice and Dice or damage
Venom costs 25 energy and increases poison damage by 30% and application chance by 10%. Its duration is nine seconds at one combo point, then 12, 15, 18 and 21 seconds at two through five points. Extra points buy duration, not a bigger percentage bonus. A short application can start the buff sooner; a long one leaves more time to build toward the next finisher.
Slice and Dice keeps your melee attack speed up. Improved Slice and Dice extends its duration, so you spend points maintaining it less often. On sustained contact, watch both buff timers while you build: if one is close to falling off, keep enough points and energy to refresh it rather than spending everything on Eviscerate.
Use Eviscerate when the damage can finish the enemy or when your buffs have enough time left for another cycle. Rupture trades that immediate damage for a bleed and needs time to tick. On a short-lived add, setting up both buffs and a fresh bleed can eat most of the fight before the spending pays back.
A dying target does not automatically make Venom a bad spend. The buff is on you, so the remaining duration can help when you move straight to another enemy. Cast it while you still have points on the current target; a surviving buff does not mean combo points transfer between enemies. If the next pull is far away, take the immediate damage instead of buying buff time that expires while you travel.
React to combo-point and energy returns
Seal Fate can add a combo point when a point-generating ability crits. Mutilate already awards two, so check your total before another 60-energy builder. At four points, its normal award already exceeds the one remaining slot; at five, spend rather than building again. Poison crits do not trigger Seal Fate, because poisons are not combo-point builders.
Ruthlessness can leave a point on the target after a finisher. Relentless Strikes gives finishers a 20% chance per point to restore 25 energy: 20% on a one-point finisher, 100% at five. A short Venom application therefore does not guarantee that its energy cost comes straight back. Look at both resources after spending before deciding what comes next.
Vigor increases maximum energy by five at rank 1. That is more room to pool before a stun or a brief damage window; it does not increase regeneration. While you can keep attacking, spend before the bar fills so you are not wasting regeneration. When saving for a specific window, stop short of the cap rather than waiting there through several ticks.
Maintain coatings and protect poison pressure
Improved Poisons increases application chance and can preserve a coating charge on an application. At rank 1, those bonuses are 2% increased application chance and a 10% chance not to consume a charge. Check both weapon coatings between pulls; saved charges do not make them permanent, and swapping a weapon means checking the new one too.
Vile Poisons increases poison damage and gives poison effects a chance to resist dispels. It helps against opponents who repeatedly cleanse your target, but it does not make the debuff impossible to remove. After a successful cleanse, keep applying pressure and watch for the poison to return before counting on Mutilate's bonus.
Poison choice also affects control. A periodic poison can break Gouge or Blind on the same enemy. If the next exchange needs that opponent left disabled, stop applying fresh periodic damage early enough for existing effects to fall off. Giving up poison pressure for a clean control window can buy a heal, an escape or time to kill someone else.
Spend Cold Blood on the intended attack
Cold Blood adds 100% crit chance to your next Sinister Strike, Backstab, Ambush, Eviscerate or Mutilate, with a three-minute cooldown. Use it when you have the energy and position for the attack you want; another eligible attack used first takes the benefit.
A Mutilate pairs the damage opportunity with combo-point generation; Eviscerate spends points you already have on immediate damage. At full points, building again wastes that generation. Venom is not an eligible attack and does no direct damage, so refreshing it is not your Cold Blood burst.

Reach Venom, then choose cross-tree support
Venom is a row-seven talent requiring Mutilate and at least 31 Assassination points. That leaves at most 20 of Forever's 51 points outside the tree. Early Combat offers Precision for hit, Improved Eviscerate for direct finishers, and Puncturing Wounds for builder support.
At rank 1, Puncturing Wounds adds 5% Mutilate crit chance. Its separate 10% Backstab crit bonus and 15% chance for Backstab to award an extra point belong to Backstab, not Mutilate. Take the talent for the benefit your builder receives rather than counting all three effects on one button.
Flawless Execution sits in Combat's fourth row, so its 16-point minimum can fit alongside Venom. It reduces Eviscerate's energy cost rather than helping Venom or Slice and Dice, so it is worth less to a build that spends most finishers on poison upkeep. Weigh that against earlier damage and reliability talents before committing the side points. The Combat guide covers the discounted ability.
Early Subtlety offers Opportunity for Mutilate damage and stealth talents for approaching opponents. Those points compete with Combat support and additional Assassination ranks. Use the removed Classic talent list when translating an old build rather than copying its point placement.
Compare both weapons and shared offensive stats
Compare weapon damage in both hands because Mutilate uses both directly. A faster weapon's extra application chances are only one part of that comparison; weapon damage, AP, offensive stats and item effects also matter. A low-damage caster weapon is not automatically poison gear just because it carries spell power, and shared hit and crit do not establish poison scaling from SP.
Forever combines spell, melee and ranged hit, and combines crit the same way. Malice explicitly improves crit for attacks and poisons, while Precision improves hit. Those stats can support weapon and poison damage together, but the shared labels do not give every attack an identical hit requirement.
Armor reduction helps armor-affected weapon damage, not Nature poison damage or bleeds. Keep that distinction when comparing an armor-ignore effect with hit or crit. Weapon skill remains a separate mechanic; a dodge/parry reduction or a weapon-based racial crit bonus is not a skill bonus. The parent guide covers class-wide gearing and racial choices.
Prepare Kidney Shot and coordinate Expose Armor
At rank 1, Improved Kidney Shot makes an enemy stunned by your Kidney Shot take 5% more damage from your poisons and attacks. Pool energy before the stun so you can spend its duration attacking, and keep Kick available for the cast you need to stop afterward. The damage increase is yours alone; original Classic's talent increased damage from all sources.
Use Kidney Shot to stop a dangerous opponent or create a kill window, even when that means delaying a damage finisher. It spends the points you could have used on Venom, so refresh an expiring poison buff before the planned stun when there is time to rebuild. Do not delay an urgent stop simply to complete that setup.
If your group assigns you Expose Armor, Improved Expose Armor lowers its energy cost and refunds combo points when cast with five. Rank 1 reduces the cost by five energy and refunds one point; it does not increase the armor removed the way the Classic talent did. The refund helps start the next cycle, but Expose still competes with your other finishers. Agree who maintains armor reduction before the pull and plan your buff refreshes around that job. See the Rogue group-utility section for shared assignments.
Assassination Rogue questions
Does Lethality increase poison critical damage?
No. Lethality names Sinister Strike, Gouge, Backstab, Mutilate, Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage. At rank 1 it increases those abilities' critical strike damage bonus by 4%, not the whole critical hit by 4%. Poisons are not in its spell list.
Can Mutilate and Adrenaline Rush fit in the same build?
No. Mutilate requires at least 21 Assassination points and Adrenaline Rush requires 31 Combat points. Their 52-point minimum exceeds Forever's 51-point budget.
Does Murder still help against Beasts and Dragonkin?
Murder applies to Humanoid and Giant targets. At rank 1 it increases all damage against those creature types by 2%. Do not spend the points expecting that bonus against a Beast or Dragonkin boss.
