What changes for Warlock?

Affliction rewards sustained DoTs and drains on enemies that live through the setup. Demonology combines sacrifice bonuses with an active pet through Demonic Pact, making pet survival important to both damage and defense. Destruction links Immolate, Incinerate and Conflagrate, with cross-school buffs and Bane of Havoc for two-target fights. The largest departure from Classic raiding is the range of attacks worth building around: you are no longer choosing talents mainly to strengthen repeated Shadow Bolts.

On this page

The biggest changes from Classic

Periodic crits reward Affliction

Crit now contributes to periodic damage, while Pandemic increases the critical strike damage bonus of specific DoTs and drains. That gives an Affliction-heavy build a direct reason to evaluate crit alongside SP and hit, without turning every old direct-hit proc into a periodic-damage trigger.

Sacrifice and summon a different demon

Demonic Pact preserves Demonic Sacrifice when you summon a different demon. Summoning the sacrificed demon still cancels it. You can combine a chosen sacrifice effect with an active pet's damage and utility, but selecting the wrong resummon loses the benefit you prepared.

Banes separate damage from curses

Agony and Doom are banes, while utility curses retain their own restriction. Bane of Havoc adds a damage-copying option with a one-target limit. Your choice is no longer simply damage or a utility curse; it also includes which bane belongs on each target.

Affliction Warlock

Ranged DPS

Affliction builds periodic damage and strengthens drains against a target already carrying your effects. Set up durable enemies, use DoTs while moving, and leave enough time to complete the channel.

Build your talents

Pandemic improves critical damage, not duration

Pandemic increases the critical strike damage bonus of Corruption, Bane of Agony, Bane of Doom, Drain Soul, Drain Life, Siphon Life and Drain Hope. Rank 1 increases that bonus by 33%. This is an increase to the critical damage bonus, not a statement that the entire critical hit deals 33% more damage. It also does not grant a duration-preserving refresh rule.

With periodic damage able to crit, crit has an offensive role across much more of Affliction's damage. Malevolence increases Shadow critical effect chance, while Malediction increases periodic damage. For a drain-heavy build, crit strengthens the ticks delivered during your stationary channel as well as the effects ticking behind it. Set up before forced movement and let those effects continue working while you reposition; clipping them early discards damage and further chances to crit. A direct-bolt build spends a different share of the fight on those spells, so it should not copy Affliction's gear choices solely because both use Shadow damage.

A short-lived enemy takes only the opening ticks of a long-duration effect. Finish a short-lived target directly when another setup cast cannot repay its GCD and mana, and reserve full preparation for enemies that will live through it.

Prepare the target before committing to drains

Improved Drains increases Drain Life and Drain Soul damage or health drained for each of your other Affliction effects on the target, up to its stated maximum. At Rank 1, that is 2% per effect up to 6%; Rank 3 gives 6% per effect up to 18%. Drain Soul triples this bonus when damaging targets below 20% health. Improved Drains also extends Drain Life range by 3 yards at Rank 1 and 10 yards at Rank 3. The execute improvement belongs to that talent's bonus, not a blanket tripling of Drain Soul's entire damage.

Drain Hope deals Shadow damage every second for six seconds and increases all other Shadow damage over time you deal to that target by 10%. It rewards putting useful effects on the target before spending time on the drain. Applying effects that will scarcely tick just to prepare a dying enemy defeats that purpose.

Soul Siphon increases the rate at which Drain Life and Drain Soul deal damage, but reduces Drain Life healing. At Rank 1, the damage rate rises by 17% and Drain Life healing falls by 10%. That healing loss matters when you are draining to survive. Fel Concentration protects Drain Life, Drain Mana and Drain Soul against damage pushback; it does not list Drain Hope or prevent enemy interrupts.

Use Nightfall and recovery without losing the target

Nightfall can trigger from Corruption, Drain Soul and Drain Life damage, granting a Shadow Trance that makes the next Shadow Bolt instant. An instant bolt gives you a useful action during repositioning and a way to deliver damage before a target dies. Classic Nightfall already triggers from Corruption and Drain Life damage; Forever adds Drain Soul. None requires a crit.

Soul Harvesting grants Soul Harvest when a victim dies while afflicted by Drain Soul. At Rank 1, for ten seconds it allows mana regeneration during casting at 50% of normal speed and increases mana regeneration by 50%. This connects a finishing drain to the next pull; it is not an always-on boss regeneration talent.

Improved Life Tap increases the mana gained from Life Tap. Use movement or the gap between targets to recover when your health is safe. Do not tap into incoming raid damage just because DoTs are still ticking. Use Siphon Life and Drain Life to recover health where they fit, and delay a tap if incoming damage could kill you.

Demonology Warlock

Ranged DPS / Pet Utility

Demonology combines an active demon with a sacrifice bonus. Choose the two demons for their school bonuses or utility, then keep the summoned pet alive and supplied with mana.

Build your talents

Choose the sacrifice and the surviving pet

Forever's Demonic Sacrifice changes the familiar Classic effects. Sacrificing an Imp grants 15% Shadow damage; a Succubus or Incubus grants 15% Fire damage. A Voidwalker restores 2% total mana every four seconds, while a Felhunter restores 3% total health every four seconds. The effect lasts two hours and normally ends if any demon is summoned.

Classic assigns Fire damage to the Imp and Shadow damage to the Succubus, with the Voidwalker restoring health and Felhunter restoring mana. The demon-to-buff assignments are reversed, and the duration grows from Classic's 30 minutes to two hours.

Demonic Pact changes the summoning restriction. A different demon preserves the effect; resummoning the sacrificed demon cancels it. For Shadow damage, sacrificing an Imp and then summoning a Succubus or Incubus pairs that sacrifice with Master Demonologist's Shadow bonus. For Fire, sacrificing a Sayaad and summoning an Imp aligns the Fire bonuses. A Felhunter instead offers a utility choice when spell control or magical defense matters more than the school bonus. This Demonic Pact is not a raid-wide SP proc.

Keep the demon functioning through the fight

Demonic Energies heals your pet for a share of your spell damage and gives your summoned demon mana equal to 50% of the mana you gain from Life Tap. Damage uptime therefore supports pet survival, while a well-timed tap helps both mana bars. Move the demon out of lethal ground effects rather than relying on the passive healing to cover them.

Unholy Power increases damage from the listed demons, Fel Vitality increases their maximum health and mana as well as your own maximum mana, and Demonic Knowledge gives spell damage and healing while a summoned demon is active. The latter scales from your level, not your pet's Stamina and Intellect. A dead or missing demon loses more than its own attacks.

Improved Health Funnel strengthens healing, lowers its health cost and reduces its threat; it can also be used regardless of the demon's health. Decide early whether the pet needs support. Repositioning before danger preserves your own casting time more effectively than trying to channel it through repeated lethal damage. Master Summoner and Fel Domination improve recovery when a replacement is needed, but with Demonic Pact you must still summon the correct different demon.

Defensive sharing and execute choices

Soul Link transfers 30% of damage taken by the caster to the active demon and increases both master and demon damage by 3%. Its protection depends on a living demon. Watch the demon's health as well as your own: transferred damage can cost you the pet and its protection.

Demonic Brand lowers Searing Pain threat and makes the pet's next two attacks generate high threat with added Fire or Shadow damage. That is useful when you want the demon to hold an enemy, but high pet threat is not automatically desirable in a raid. Match the talent's use to who is supposed to tank.

Decimation improves Shadow Bolt or Searing Pain against enemies below 35% health and grants a ten-second Soul Fire cast-time reduction with no Soul Shard cost. It also reduces Soul Fire's cooldown. The shortened Soul Fire still needs a safe cast window and a target that survives until it lands. Use the ten-second buff window to reposition first if needed.

Destruction Warlock

Ranged DPS

Destruction uses Immolate to strengthen Incinerate and enable Conflagrate, while Shadowburn supports Fire through Shadow and Flame. Your talent rank changes whether Conflagrate consumes Immolate, so the same sequence does not fit every build.

Build your talents

Immolate is both damage and preparation

Incinerate deals 25% additional damage when its target is afflicted by Immolate. Conflagrate requires Immolate and, without Shadow and Flame, consumes it. That keeps the Classic tradeoff between immediate damage and remaining ticks, while also removing the condition that improves Incinerate.

Shadow and Flame changes that tradeoff by rank. Rank 1 gives Conflagrate a 20% chance to preserve Immolate, Rank 4 gives 80%, and Rank 5 gives 100%. Below Rank 5, check whether Immolate survived before reapplying it. At Rank 5, Conflagrate leaves it intact, so you can use Conflagrate without rebuilding the Incinerate bonus after each cast.

With Immolate ticks able to crit, consuming an effect early gives up their damage and crit chances. At lower Shadow and Flame ranks, a dying or soon-unreachable target favors converting those remaining ticks into immediate Conflagrate damage. Aftermath also increases Immolate's initial damage and gives Conflagrate a chance to daze, useful against short-lived enemies and fleeing targets.

Cross schools when the payoff is useful

Shadow and Flame makes Conflagrate increase your Shadow damage for 20 seconds and Shadowburn increase your Fire damage for 20 seconds. Each damage bonus is 2% at Rank 1, 8% at Rank 4 and 10% at Rank 5. Shadowburn also has a 20%, 80% or 100% chance respectively to refund a Soul Shard immediately. The direction matters: your Fire hit helps Shadow, and your Shadow hit helps Fire.

Use the cross-school hit when its damage and the following buff justify the cast, mana and shard cost. The bonuses say all Shadow or Fire damage, not only direct casts; do not evaluate an Affliction hybrid as though its periodic damage were excluded. Shadowburn offers immediate damage and a shard if a non-trivial target dies within eight seconds, which rewards useful finishing or movement casts rather than wasting it on an unsuitable target.

Improved Shadow Bolt makes your Shadow Bolt critical strikes increase Shadow damage the target takes from your attacks for 12 seconds. Classic's version buffs Shadow damage dealt to the target and expires after four non-periodic damage sources or 12 seconds. Forever makes the vulnerability personal and drops the four-hit expiration condition. It still rewards Shadow Bolt crits, but no longer supplies the old shared Shadow-damage bonus.

Bane of Havoc and safe area damage

Bane of Havoc marks one target for five minutes and deals 15% of the Warlock's damage to other targets to that marked enemy. It is limited to one target, and only one bane per Warlock can be active on each target. Put it on an enemy that must take damage while you actively attack something else; it does not reward continuing to tunnel the marked enemy.

The marked target also gives up your other bane choice there. On a single isolated boss, there is no second target supplying copied damage. On a two-target fight, consider target priority as well as total damage: copying damage into an enemy the group must stop attacking is a liability. The effect specifies your damage; pet damage is not listed.

Pyroclasm gives Rain of Fire and Hellfire a chance to stun over their duration and gives Soul Fire its own stun chance. That is not guaranteed control for a dangerous pull. Intensity protects Destruction casts and channels against damage pushback, while Cataclysm lowers mana costs. Hellfire damages you as well as nearby enemies; use Rain of Fire when staying at range is safer, and keep either channel away from controlled targets.

What changes from Classic raiding

Original Classic raids had a 16-debuff limit. Warlocks maintained assigned curses, used Corruption where a debuff slot was available, and spent most damage casts on Shadow Bolt. DS/Ruin sacrificed a Succubus for Shadow damage and fought without a pet. SM/Ruin took Shadow Mastery and could keep a pet, including an Imp for its party Stamina buff. Even an Affliction-heavy raid build was therefore usually a Shadow Bolt build, not a full DoT-and-drain rotation.

DoTs, drains and active demons already had uses in Classic leveling, farming, dungeons and PvP. Raid debuff pressure, pet survival and Fire-resistant enemies narrowed their use in raids. Forever's periodic crits, drain talents, banes and Demonic Pact change what you can build around; they are not the introduction of sustained damage or pet play to the class.

Banes, curses and target lifetime

Classic Curse of Agony occupies the same one-curse-per-Warlock restriction as utility curses. In Forever, Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom belong to the bane side, while Curse of Exhaustion explicitly retains the one-curse rule. This separates damage maintenance from your curse assignment. You still choose only one of your banes on a given target; Havoc is not something to stack over your own Agony there.

Ask what the group needs before choosing the utility curse. Curse of Exhaustion slows a dangerous enemy, but controlling its path matters as much as applying the slow. Amplify Curse improves your next Curse of Weakness, Bane of Agony or Curse of Exhaustion with different stated effects, so spend it on the job you actually need.

Bane of Agony keeps Classic Agony's back-loaded damage over 24 seconds. Refreshing it early loses the stronger late ticks, so let it finish when you can. Separate long-lived enemies from cleanup targets. Maintain full effects on a boss or durable add, use immediate damage when only a short window remains, and stop investing in a target that is about to become immune. Once applied, DoTs keep dealing damage while you move. Leave controlled targets clean and avoid refreshing effects that cannot finish before an immunity phase.

Hit, periodic crit and item choices

Suppression now increases hit chance with all spells and attacks and reduces all threat you generate. Classic Suppression only reduces the chance enemies resist Affliction spells. That makes Forever's talent useful to mixed-school and direct-damage play as well as DoT application. Count its actual selected rank when comparing gear; a missed setup spell can delay every cast that depends on it.

Unified hit and crit widen the items worth considering. Affliction gains from periodic crits and Pandemic, while Destruction has Ruin to increase the critical strike damage bonus of its spells. Crit therefore needs to be evaluated against your real damage mix instead of dismissed for a DoT-heavy character or universally prioritized over SP. Demonology should weigh those caster stats against its chosen Fire or Shadow sacrifice and actual casts, rather than valuing a piece only for the demon it has summoned. Demonic Knowledge scales with your level, so extra pet Stamina is not a hidden source of SP from that talent.

New caster weapons supply spell damage and healing during leveling. Weapon DPS and retained weapon skill do not increase your Shadow Bolt or drain hit chance. Healing items grant damage equal to one-third of their bonus healing, making some useful interim choices, but compare that actual damage contribution with the SP, hit and crit you give up. Stamina also matters when taps, channeling and Soul Link make your health bar part of the resource plan.

Warlock races and resource management

Human Sword Specialization gives 2% spell and ability crit while wielding a sword. Compare the sword and off-hand together with that racial rather than ignoring a better caster weapon. Will to Survive removes stuns, useful when a stun prevents the defensive or finishing cast you need.

Gnome Expansive Mind grants 5% more mana, while Eureka! reduces cost and adds 10% damage or healing to your next three abilities. Spend those uses during your damage window. Escape Artist's brief root and snare immunity helps you create space for another cast.

Orc Blood Fury grants 10% AP and SP for 15 seconds. Shatter Curse provides Curse and Bane immunity with reduced magical damage for eight seconds, and Hardiness reduces stun duration by 20%. Do not import a Classic pet-damage racial into this revised racial list. Troll, a new Warlock choice, offers 10% cast and attack speed for ten seconds through Berserking, plus recovery and Beast damage benefits.

Undead Cannibalize restores health and mana from corpses, reducing the need to spend health on taps between eligible pulls. Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear and Sleep but grants no immunity afterward. Cannibalize helps between corpse-producing pulls; Will of the Forsaken is more valuable when Charm, Fear or Sleep threatens your casting time.

Pet utility and group play

With fewer raid players, your curse assignment, demon utility and crowd control are more visible contributions. A Felhunter selected for spell control can justify giving up a damage-oriented demon choice. Improved Felhunter reduces Spell Lock's cooldown and improves its other listed utility, while Improved Sayaad strengthens Seduction as well as damage tools.

Banish controls a Demon or Elemental and makes it immune while banished. Fear can create room but also send an enemy toward another pack, so use it with terrain and patrols in mind. Keep pet attacks and DoTs off targets the group intends to control. Do not put Havoc on a target that needs to stay controlled.

Before a dangerous phase, check your own health, mana and pet position together. Tap while it is safe, recall or reposition the demon before environmental damage, and enter the next casting window ready to use it. That leaves the next casting window for damage rather than emergency taps or a resummon.

Warlock questions

What does Pandemic do in WoW Forever?

Pandemic increases the critical strike damage bonus of its listed DoTs and drains, including Corruption, the Agony and Doom banes, and Drain Hope. Rank 1 gives 33% increased critical strike damage bonus. It is not a DoT refresh mechanic and does not mean the entire critical hit gains 33% damage.

Does Demonic Pact buff the raid's spell power?

No. Forever's Demonic Pact lets you retain Demonic Sacrifice when summoning a different demon. Resummoning the sacrificed demon still cancels the effect. Its benefit is combining a sacrifice with an active pet's damage, defensive talents and utility, not granting a later-expansion raid-wide spell-power proc.

Which demon should a Shadow Warlock sacrifice?

The Imp grants 15% Shadow damage through Forever's Demonic Sacrifice. That reverses the familiar Classic offensive assignment. With Demonic Pact, you can then summon a different demon and retain the sacrifice. A Succubus or Incubus can align with Master Demonologist's Shadow benefit; a Felhunter offers a utility alternative.

Should I cast Conflagrate as soon as Immolate lands?

Your Shadow and Flame rank changes the answer. Without it, Conflagrate consumes Immolate; Rank 1 gives a 20% chance to preserve it, Rank 4 gives 80%, and Rank 5 gives 100%. Below Rank 5, weigh immediate damage against remaining ticks and the Incinerate bonus, then check whether Immolate survived. At Rank 5, Conflagrate no longer consumes it, so preserving the DoT is not a reason to delay Conflagrate.
