Bear Druid Overview & Changes - WoW Forever Guide
Feral Bear Druid in WoW Forever gets repeated three-target Mangle attacks during Berserk, rage chances from dodges and extra armor from defense skill through Thick Hide. Bear and Cat share the Feral Combat tree, but a tank still needs survival gear and points that work while taking hits. Leaving Bear to heal means someone else has to take the enemy first.
Bear Druid overview
Build Bear around surviving the next hits, keeping dangerous enemies off the group and having rage for the action you need next. Berserk helps establish threat on a compact pack, but it does not cover every enemy or make Mangle free. When comparing gear, separate physical mitigation from magic-damage survival instead of judging every tank upgrade by armor alone.

The biggest changes from Classic
- Berserk keeps Mangle's rage cost
Mangle costs 20 rage before talent reductions. Berserk removes its cooldown and lets it strike up to three targets for 15 seconds; an empty rage bar still stops the attacks.
- Dodge and crit offer separate rage chances
Natural Reaction can award rage when you dodge, and Primal Fury can award rage when you crit in Bear or Dire Bear. Neither pays out before the dodge or crit actually happens.
- Thick Hide adds armor, not crit immunity
Thick Hide grants base armor from your level and from defense skill above five times your level. Form multipliers can raise it further, but the talent does not make you immune to crits.
Bear Druid
Tank
Bear's new threat tools still need rage, positioning and attention to individual enemies. Mangle and Swipe only cover a few targets, while Thick Hide and Natural Reaction reward a tanking setup. Cat damage points are available in the same tree, but they do not all help you hold a boss.
Build your talentsEstablish the pull before spending every point of rage
Pick the first kill target and separate the enemies that will stay controlled. Position the active pack so your melee attacks reach it without dragging cleave across the controlled targets. Your first few attacks need to cover the enemies the group is damaging, not just the one you have selected.
Mangle requires Bear or Dire Bear, costs 20 rage before reductions and normally has a six-second cooldown. Ferocity cuts the cost of Mangle, Maul and Swipe. Keep rage for the next Mangle or the control you owe, rather than dumping it into damage right before the button comes back.
Growl taunts an enemy onto you and does nothing if that enemy is already attacking you. Save it to recover a loose enemy instead of pressing it on your current target as a damage button, then follow with attacks so the enemy stays on you when the group resumes damage.
Use Berserk for a pack you can reach and afford
Berserk removes Mangle's cooldown and makes it strike up to three targets for 15 seconds. Gather the pack and have rage ready before you commit the cooldown; popping it while enemies are still running in wastes part of the window.
Losing the cooldown does not make Mangle free. Ferocity lowers that cost, but you still have to watch rage as you repeat the attack. Berserk's combo-point-generator crit bonus belongs to Cat abilities, so it gives Bear no guaranteed Mangle crit and no guaranteed Primal Fury rage from each hit.
Berserk also has a three-minute cooldown, clears fear and grants fear immunity. A fear that would send you running with enemies behind you is a reason to hold it. If you use it for opening threat instead, tell the group that the next fear needs another answer.
Cover the enemies outside three-target attacks
Three-target Mangle does not secure a fourth or fifth enemy on its own, and Swipe also only strikes three nearby enemies. Watch the enemies outside that coverage, switch targets to pick up strays and ask damage dealers to stay on the kill target instead of splitting threat across the pull. A ranged caster left outside melee needs control or repositioning, not another Mangle on the pack beside you.
Feral Instinct increases Swipe damage, and Savage Fury increases Maul and Swipe among its listed attacks. Savage Fury is also Mangle's prerequisite, but its bonus does not list Mangle, so spend those points with the named attacks in mind rather than counting them as a blanket Bear buff.
Challenging Roar forces nearby enemies to focus you for six seconds. Use that time to rebuild the pull with attacks and coordinated control; the attention is temporary, so you cannot ignore enemies until it ends. If there are too many active enemies to survive or cover, reduce the pull or keep more of it controlled instead of treating Berserk as permission to take everything.
Budget rage without relying on a lucky dodge
At rank 1, Natural Reaction gives 1% dodge and a 20% chance at five rage each time you dodge. It requires Bear or Dire Bear. The dodge avoids the hit, but the rage is still a separate roll, so do not plan an urgent attack around the next swing paying for it.
At rank 1, Primal Fury gives a 50% chance at five rage after a critical strike in Bear or Dire Bear, and Sharpened Claws increases your crit chance and is required for it. More crit supports threat and creates more rage chances, but it does not replace keeping a reserve.
Furor gives an entry-rage chance when you shift into Bear, guaranteed ten rage at rank 5. Shift before an assigned pickup so you are already in Bear when the enemy arrives, and do not leave Bear under an active boss just to fish for another entry bonus.
Enrage generates rage but reduces base armor while active. Avoid pressing it into an already dangerous physical spike just to keep spending. Using it before a pull means the armor penalty lasts into the first hits, so that rage is not free.
Compare armor, defense and health for the incoming damage
Classic Thick Hide increased armor from items, while Forever's Thick Hide adds base armor in Bear, Cat, Dire Bear and Moonkin. At rank 1 it grants one armor per character level plus 0.67 armor for each point of defense skill above five times your level, before applicable form multipliers. At level 60, only defense above 300 feeds that defense-based term.
Weigh a defense item against the armor and Stamina you give up to equip it. The added armor helps against physical hits, but the talent gives no automatic crit immunity. Heart of the Wild increases Bear and Dire Bear Stamina by 20% at rank 5, so the health on survival pieces matters when you have to live through consecutive hits.
Armor does nothing against magic-damage spikes. Against dangerous magic damage, keep enough health to survive the cast, arrange an interrupt when possible and use the right resistance or protection effect for that school; Natural Reaction's melee dodge is no substitute. Tell your healer which part of the pull is likely to cause the sharp health drop, not after you are nearly dead.

Prioritize the talents that work while tanking
Heart of the Wild, Thick Hide and Natural Reaction carry the survival side of a Bear build. Ferocity, Feral Instinct and Savage Fury pay for the costs or damage of specific tank attacks. Brutal Impact gives Bash more stun time and a shorter cooldown, which helps on susceptible dungeon enemies but does not make bosses stunnable.
King of the Jungle feeds Cat energy through Tiger's Fury, so it earns points for the time you spend in Cat, not for your Bear rage bar. Rend and Tear needs a bleeding target for its melee ability bonus, and not every add is bleeding. If an encounter keeps you tanking throughout, Cat-only points are points you could have spent on that assignment.
Mangle sits in row four and needs both points in Savage Fury; Berserk sits in row seven and needs Leader of the Pack, for a minimum of 31 Feral points. Furor in Restoration's first row fits in the remaining 20. Use the Cat guide for damage-role decisions and the parent's removed-talent comparison for old talent changes.
Interrupt and change roles without exposing the group
Bear's Feral Charge costs five rage, has an 8–25-yard range, interrupts the enemy's current spell for four seconds and immobilizes it. Save it for a dangerous caster you can reach. It cannot charge inside its minimum range, so line up another interrupt for casts you have to handle right beside the boss.
Bash stuns where the target is susceptible, and Brutal Impact extends that stun and cuts Bash's cooldown. Coordinate the two instead of burning both on the same harmless cast and having nothing for the next dangerous one. Cat Charge's leap is a different effect, not an interrupt you can fall back on after shifting.
Before you heal, dispel or switch to Cat, have another tank take over and confirm the enemy has changed targets: leaving Bear drops the defenses you were relying on. If you are the only tank holding the pull, stay in form and call for healing or control rather than trying to cast through the incoming hits.
Leader of the Pack works while you tank, granting 3% crit to party members within 45 yards, and it is exclusive with Moonkin Aura, so the group does not need an extra Cat beside you for the same buff. The parent covers party organization and race choices.
Keep threat upgrades separate from survival losses
Hit helps your attacks land, while attack power and crit add damage behind your threat. Compare those when enemies repeatedly leave you despite good target coverage; if you are dying in the first few hits, damage gear will not fix it. Work out whether enemies escaped your attacks or your health failed under hits you were already holding.
Unified hit and crit do not turn a caster weapon into a tank weapon or set a weapon-DPS priority for Feral forms. Compare the item's form-relevant bonuses, armor, Stamina and defense instead of importing a Warrior list, and keep separate damage pieces for fights where you can safely stay in Cat.
Dungeon items have been reworked, so an old Classic BiS slot is no proof the item is still best. Use the Druid gearing section for the broader item changes, then compare each replacement against the damage you are responsible for surviving.
Bear Druid questions
Does Berserk make Bear Mangle crit every time?
No. Berserk adds crit chance to combo-point-generating abilities. In Bear it instead removes Mangle's cooldown and allows up to three targets; Mangle still costs rage and does not inherit the Cat generator clause.
Should I use Growl whenever it is ready?
Use it to recover an enemy or take an agreed tank handoff. Growl has no effect when the target is already attacking you, so pressing it on cooldown there wastes the taunt.
Does defense below 300 add Thick Hide armor at level 60?
No. The defense-based part of Thick Hide counts only skill above five times your level: above 300 at level 60. The separate armor-per-level part still applies in the named forms, and this threshold is not a crit-immunity target.
Do Cat and Bear use different talent trees?
No. Both use Feral Combat. Talents such as Heart of the Wild help both forms, while Natural Reaction requires Bear or Dire Bear and King of the Jungle supplies Cat energy. Pick the points and gear for the tanking you will need to do.
