WoW Forever Priest Guide: Disc, Holy, & Shadow Changes
Priest gains a stronger Holy damage path, direct heals that reopen shield windows and a much less mana-hungry Shadowform. Holy adds Binding Heal and Prayer of Mending to Classic's mix of downranked direct heals, Renew and emergency shields.
What changes for Priest?
Discipline can build around Holy damage or combine Penance, shields and critical heals; Holy answers simultaneous damage with Binding Heal and a bouncing Prayer of Mending. Shadow trades some of Classic Shadowform's flat damage bonus for much cheaper spells and stronger critical damage. Shadow Weaving now improves your own damage rather than increasing the target's Shadow damage taken, so it no longer supplies that Warlock damage boost. Healing still requires leaving Shadowform. Baseline Fear Ward opens race choice beyond Classic's Dwarf Priest advantage.

The biggest changes from Classic
- Penance works both ways
Penance targets an enemy for Holy damage or an ally for healing. Holy Fire supports its damage through Power in Light, while Renewed Hope supports its healing on targets with Weakened Soul, even after their shield has broken. Choose the target for the job you need; the damage channel does not also heal allies.
- Shadowform changes your gearing
Shadowform cuts Shadow spell mana costs by 50% and increases their critical strike damage bonus by 100%, alongside 10% Shadow damage and 15% reduced Physical damage taken. With DoTs able to crit, critical chance reaches more of Shadow's damage instead of serving mainly its direct casts.
- Healing spells feed each other
Renewed Hope shortens Weakened Soul through named direct heals, while Litany of Light returns mana when consecutive heals differ. Discipline can bring the next shield forward by repeating an eligible heal; Holy earns its refund by changing spells when the incoming damage calls for it.
Discipline Priest
Healer / Holy spell DPS
Discipline supports two distinct plans: Holy Fire into Holy damage, or shields backed by direct healing and absorbs. Penance connects those plans without turning damage into passive raid healing.
Build your talentsHoly Fire sets up damage
Power in Light increases Smite and Penance damage against targets afflicted with your Holy Fire. Maintain Holy Fire on durable targets; a nearly dead mob may not live long enough to repay the setup cast. Holy Precision supplies Holy spell hit, while Mental Agility reduces the cost of Smite, Holy Fire and instant spells.
Classic already supported Smite through Divine Fury, Holy Specialization and Searing Light. Forever adds dedicated Holy hit and the Holy Fire interaction, with Penance as another damage spell. Supporting Holy talents still shorten Smite and Holy Fire casts, add Holy crit and increase Holy damage. Those points compete with deeper healing talents, so a dedicated damage build and a healer using spare casting time have different priorities.
Penance is a targeting decision
Penance delivers its effect immediately and then every second for two seconds. You get a quick first impact followed by a channel; line of sight and upcoming movement determine whether you can finish it.
An enemy-targeted Penance deals damage, while an ally-targeted Penance heals. In five-player groups, use offensive channels between tank spikes and keep a friendly target binding ready for the next heal. If damage rises mid-channel, stopping early to heal can be worth more than its final offensive pulse.
Shields and Weakened Soul
Classic Power Word: Shield was an instant absorb with a 15-second reshield lockout, useful before predictable damage but expensive for routine healing. Forever's Soul Warding reduces the spell cooldown by four seconds and its mana cost by 15%; Weakened Soul still controls when the same target can receive another shield.
Renewed Hope increases the critical chance of Flash Heal, Binding Heal, Lesser Heal, Heal, Greater Heal and Penance on targets with Weakened Soul, and those heals shorten the debuff. The debuff matters even after the absorb is gone: follow a shield with the direct healing the target needs to bring the next shield forward.
Divine Aegis adds a 12-second protective shield from critical heals. Land those heals where both the recovery and absorb can help with follow-up damage. Coordinate shield targets with other Priests to avoid competing for the same Weakened Soul window.
Mana and offensive cooldowns
Meditation preserves part of your regeneration while casting, Mental Strength increases Intellect, and Inner Focus makes the next spell free with extra critical-effect chance when eligible. Pair Inner Focus with a costly heal such as Greater Heal or Prayer of Healing when its healing will be useful.
Power Infusion retains Classic's 20% spell damage and healing increase for 15 seconds, rather than granting haste. Give it to someone with uninterrupted casting time, or use its healing bonus for an actual damage event. Silent Resolve reduces Holy threat and shortens incoming stun, fear and silence effects, making it relevant to both offensive casting and keeping control of a pressured healer.
Holy Priest
Healer
Holy adds a low-threat heal for you and an ally, a bouncing heal and mana returns for changing healing spells. Direct heals, Renew and party healing each cover different damage patterns.
Build your talentsBinding Heal and changing spells
Classic Priest healing already involved spell and rank choices: downranked Heal or Greater Heal for efficiency, Flash Heal for urgent recovery, Renew during movement and shields before predictable damage. Forever adds a reward for changing spells, rather than introducing that decision from scratch.
Binding Heal heals a friendly target and you with low threat. Use it after shared raid damage or when a loose enemy has hit you while the tank still needs healing. If you are healthy, a single-target heal puts more of its work into the injured player.
Litany of Light returns mana equal to a portion of a healing spell's base cost when your previous heal was a different spell. Renew followed by a needed direct heal, or Binding Heal followed by another recovery spell, can earn the refund. Repeated damage that calls for the same heal is still a reason to repeat it; adding an unnecessary cast spends mana to obtain a smaller refund.
Prayer of Mending follows damage
Prayer of Mending heals when its target takes damage or receives non-periodic healing, then jumps to a party or raid member within 20 yards. It jumps up to five times, lasts 30 seconds after each jump and can occupy only one target per caster. Direct healing can therefore move it even before the next enemy hit.
Place it where damage and nearby allies will keep it useful. A separated player can strand the next jump, and replacing your existing spell discards its remaining opportunity. Follow where it travels rather than recasting blindly. Holy Nova fills a different job: damage around you and healing to nearby party members, with no threat from either effect. Its close range makes positioning part of the spell's cost.
Spirit is not equal damage
At rank five, Spiritual Guidance converts up to 25% of Spirit into spell healing but only up to 8% into spell damage. Classic's rank-five talent gave up to 25% to both. Spirit remains attractive for a Holy healer, but copying the old Spirit-to-damage valuation exaggerates its offensive contribution. Spiritual Healing improves healing, while Improved Healing reduces costs for its named spells, including Penance and Prayer of Mending.
Searing Light gives Holy Fire periodic damage a chance to make your next Holy Nova free. Use a free Nova when its radius can do useful work; do not walk into danger for it. The proc is tied to periodic damage occurring, not to that damage being a critical strike. That distinction matters when evaluating the new DoT crit rules.
Direct crits and staying alive
Inspiration explicitly requires non-periodic critical heals and grants Armor for 15 seconds. Direct-heal crits therefore help against physical pressure; Renew ticks do not trigger it. Holy Specialization supports your Holy critical effects, while Spell Warding reduces incoming spell damage and Twilight Focus helps casting through damage. These defensive talents preserve casts you would otherwise lose.
Blessed Recovery also triggers after a single attack takes more than 30% of your maximum health, not only after a melee or ranged crit, and refreshing it carries over remaining healing. Spirit of Redemption supplies 15 seconds of free healing after death but cannot move. Use its remaining range and line of sight to cover allies while the group recovers.
Shadow Priest
Ranged DPS
Shadow focuses more on its own sustained damage, periodic pressure and critical scaling. Cheaper spells ease endurance, but target life, channel uptime and leaving form to heal remain real costs.
Build your talentsShadowform trades damage for endurance
Classic Shadow maintained Shadow Word: Pain and Shadow Weaving, used Mind Blast and filled with Mind Flay; long fights could force lower ranks or wanding as mana ran out. Classic Shadowform gave 15% Shadow damage and 15% reduced Physical damage taken. Forever gives 10% Shadow damage, keeps that physical reduction, halves Shadow spell mana costs and increases their critical strike damage bonus by 100%. The lower flat bonus comes with substantially cheaper sustained casting and stronger crits. The crit modifier applies to the bonus portion of a critical strike.
Classic barred Holy spells in Shadowform; Forever bars healing spells. Leave form for emergency healing and budget for those heals and the return to form separately from your discounted Shadow damage casts.
DoTs and dying targets
Improved Shadow Word: Pain extends its duration, reducing refresh work on targets that live long enough. Shadowform's increased critical damage bonus now benefits those periodic crits as well as direct casts, making Shadow Word: Pain uptime part of the return on your crit gear. Preserve useful ticks while you channel Mind Flay or reposition instead of refreshing early simply to fill a gap. Let target lifespan decide where you spend mana: a fresh long DoT on an enemy about to die sacrifices immediate damage for ticks that never happen.
Devouring Contagion reduces Devouring Plague's mana cost and spreads it when an afflicted target dies, carrying only its remaining duration. Rank 1 reduces the cost by 25% and jumps within five yards; Rank 2 reduces it by 50% and jumps within ten yards. Put it on a target that will die beside the next victim with useful time left. Early Demise separately increases Shadow Word: Death's critical chance against targets at or below 20% health.
Personal damage and party healing
Shadow Weaving now increases the Shadow damage you deal, stacking up to five times. Classic applied Shadow Vulnerability to the enemy, increasing Shadow damage taken. That old debuff supported the raid's Warlocks; Forever moves the benefit to your own sustained damage.
Vampiric Embrace heals party members for 20% of your Shadow spell damage for 30 seconds and gives Spirit Tap a chance to trigger when afflicted enemies die. That makes it useful on an assigned kill target even when someone else gets the final hit. Party healing is valuable against repeated chip damage, but it is neither raid-wide coverage nor a substitute for a healer responding to an individual spike.
Channels, range and control
Improved Mind Flay trades slowing strength for damage and range. Rank 1 adds 10% damage and five yards, with a 35% slow; Rank 2 adds 20% damage and ten yards, with a 20% slow. The base spell slows by 50%. The extra reach makes channels easier to finish; the weaker slow gives a pursuer more ground. Choose it with both PvE uptime and PvP spacing in mind. Shadow Reach also extends offensive Shadow range, while Shadow Affinity reduces Shadow threat.
Silence both silences for five seconds and interrupts spellcasts for three seconds. Use that interrupt deliberately on a dangerous cast rather than spending it as incidental damage support. Improved Psychic Scream and Improved Fade answer different problems: controlling nearby enemies versus reducing immediate threat pressure. In a dungeon, standing where fear will not scatter mobs into another pack is often worth more than starting one extra channel.

Hit, crit and healer damage gear
Unified hit lets the same item stat improve your offensive spell reliability regardless of its old melee or caster label, but Holy Precision and Shadow Focus remain school-specific talents. A Holy damage set and a Shadow set therefore do not have identical talent contributions. Healing does not need offensive hit; buy it for the damage and hostile utility you actually use, not at the expense of keeping your assignment alive.
Unified crit opens more item choices, and periodic damage crits broaden its offensive value. Periodic damage crits do not establish a healing-over-time crit mechanic. Inspiration expressly excludes periodic healing. For Discipline, useful direct-heal crits can add Divine Aegis protection; for Holy, non-periodic crits can maintain Inspiration against physical damage. Those benefits do not replace enough bonus healing and mana to land the required heal when it is needed. Shadow instead values crit through its sustained damage and Shadowform bonus, so the same crit item can be a different upgrade for each assignment.
Healing gear now provides one-third as much bonus damage. This makes your healing set useful for questing and safer dungeon damage windows, especially alongside Holy damage talents. New caster weapons also supply spell damage and healing, so inspect upgrades during leveling instead of treating your weapon only as a stat stick until endgame. Retained weapon skill is not a reason for a casting Priest to chase melee gear; stronger offensive stats still need to support the spells you use.
Priest racial spells and race choice
Fear Ward is baseline for every Priest. Separate that shared tool from racial spells and from each race's general abilities when choosing your character. Divine Spirit is also baseline, so neither spell requires preserving an old talent or racial assumption.
- Human: Divine Grace removes Weakened Soul from a target and heals them, giving shield timing an active reset. The Human Spirit adds 5% Spirit, while Will to Survive removes stuns.
- Dwarf: Chastise supplies Holy damage and a short root; Desperate Prayer supplies instant self-healing. Stoneform adds protection against bleeds, poisons and diseases plus reduced Physical damage taken. Mace Specialization adds 1% spell and ability crit while a mace is equipped.
- Undead: Dark Sacrifice converts your health into mana over 15 seconds on a ten-minute cooldown. Use it where the health cost is safe, not immediately before raid damage. Cannibalize restores health and mana from corpses; Will of the Forsaken breaks charm, fear and sleep without a following immunity window.
- Gnome: Confounding Flash offers area crowd control and Contingency Plan prevents a death and heals instead. Eureka! reduces cost and adds 10% damage/healing to your next three abilities; Expansive Mind adds 5% mana.
Troll and Night Elf offer different casting cooldowns: Troll Berserking adds 10% attack and cast speed for ten seconds, while Night Elf Elune's Light adds 10% critical chance for 15 seconds. Berserking helps fit direct heals or damage casts into a safe window; Elune's Light supports direct-heal crit talents or Shadow damage, including DoTs. Choose the window you can use without exhausting the mana needed for the next phase.
Smaller raids, dungeons and solo play
Agree who covers emergency direct healing, who handles absorbs and when you can spend mana on damage. Shield lockouts, Prayer of Mending positioning and Binding Heal's self-heal give Discipline and Holy different ways to handle the same damage pattern. Shadow's Vampiric Embrace is party-limited, making group placement matter.
In dungeons, fit Holy Fire setup and Penance or Mind Flay channels between movement and healing demands. Save Silence for dangerous casts and use Fade when an enemy turns toward you; Holy and Shadow threat-reduction talents support different spell schools.
For solo play, Holy damage keeps healing readily available, while Shadow offers cheap sustained spells and kill-based recovery. Healing gear's damage contribution reduces the need for a separate questing set. Leave enough mana for a shield or heal if another enemy joins the fight.

Priest questions
Can Discipline Priest deal damage in WoW Forever?
Yes. Power in Light rewards Smite and Penance against targets affected by your Holy Fire, Holy Precision adds Holy hit, and Mental Agility reduces relevant mana costs. You can support that path with Holy talents. Penance can damage or heal depending on its target; damaging an enemy does not automatically heal your party.
Does Shadow Priest still buff Warlock damage through Shadow Weaving?
Forever Shadow Weaving increases the Shadow damage you deal, rather than applying Classic's Shadow damage vulnerability to the target. Do not count it as the old Warlock support debuff. Shadow still brings party healing through Vampiric Embrace, control and Priest utility, alongside a Shadowform built around lower mana costs and stronger critical damage.
Which Priest race gets Fear Ward?
Every Priest gets Fear Ward baseline. Race choice instead comes down to general racials and the separate Priest racial spells, such as Human Divine Grace or Dwarf Chastise and Desperate Prayer. Troll Berserking and Night Elf Elune's Light offer casting windows, while Gnome and Undead provide their own control, survival and resource tools.
Should a healing Priest collect damage gear?
Your healing gear already grants one-third as much bonus damage, so it supports questing and occasional dungeon damage without a full swap. A dedicated damage role still benefits from offensive hit and appropriate damage stats. Keep your healing assignment's mana and throughput needs first rather than collecting hit solely because the stat is unified.
