A WoW Forever presentation offers a closer look at the project’s planned visual systems, from volumetric fog and time-of-day shadows to global illumination and water reflections. The presentation frames the changes as a zone-by-zone effort to preserve the atmosphere players associate with vanilla Azeroth, rather than a blanket graphical filter.
Fog designed for atmosphere rather than draw-distance limits
The presenters said fog in original WoW was used both to establish a zone’s mood and to conceal limits on view distance. For WoW Forever, they described replacing distant fog with a controllable volumetric-fog system.
According to the presentation, artists can use the system to create localized pockets of fog that players can move through, with movement, particles and texture. Light can scatter through the fog, while terrain, trees and other objects cast shadows into it. The speakers showed this as a way to shape visibility and atmosphere without relying on a fixed wall of distant fog.
Sun and moon lighting tied more closely to the sky
The lighting work also aims to bring the sun and moon’s visible positions into closer alignment with the light cast across the world. The presenters said that, historically, those positions did not fully match the direction of world lighting.
Under the new approach described in the video, terrain and structures can more accurately block light and cast shadows as time passes. The presentation used examples of mountains and towers to illustrate shadows moving with the sun and moon, while noting that artistic choices still apply.
Global illumination for indirect light
The team also described a global-illumination system intended to replace flatter ambient fill lighting in shaded areas. In practice, this means indirect light can bounce from surfaces and carry some of their color into nearby shadows—for example, light reflected from foliage or a building.
The presentation says the system uses a custom ray tracer built from existing ideas and newer technology. The developers said it was designed to run on both the project’s recommended and minimum hardware requirements, though the recording does not provide performance figures or full specifications.
Water gains flow, wind response and changing reflections
Water is another major focus of the presentation. The described system gives artists control over waves, wind-driven movement and the flow of rivers, including how water follows terrain. The speakers said the tools can also support deliberately unusual flows for magical rivers.
The presentation further showed controls for water color, transparency and the way light is absorbed at different depths. Reflections are described as changing with the time of day and water movement, including reflections of the broader environment as well as the sun and moon.
A recreation guided by the 1.12 client
The presenters stressed that the visual changes are not intended as a simple graphics switch. They said the team used the original 1.12 vanilla debug client as a reference, reviewing each time of day and rebuilding lighting and atmosphere to match what they considered each zone’s original character.
That approach is central to the pitch: newer rendering technology is being used to push established zone identities rather than give every location the same treatment. In the Duskwood example shown in the recording, the team layered moonlight, local lights, indirect illumination and several fog effects, then reduced stronger post-processing to keep the result aligned with the zone’s familiar mood.
