WoW Forever will exist in a separate continuity from modern World of Warcraft, an official explanation has confirmed. The approach is meant to let the team develop stories for Forever without creating plot developments that would need to be addressed directly in the modern game.
That separation does not mean the project plans to discard the setting’s core history. The team says it intends to retain the foundational lore established by the Warcraft real-time strategy games, including their major events and character arcs.
A separate setting for future stories
The stated goal is to give WoW Forever room to build its own future while remaining recognizable as Warcraft. Rather than changing key pieces of established RTS history, its new stories are intended to stay within that foundational framework and then develop what follows in ways that serve Forever’s setting first.
For players, that means Forever’s narrative developments should not be treated as events in modern WoW’s ongoing timeline. At the same time, the project is still expected to draw on the core lore that established Azeroth’s earlier eras.
