Blacksmithing's camp chain: Sharpening Wheel at skill 20, Anvil at 140 and Master Forge at 300, plus the Camping 101 intro quest.

Blacksmithing was Blizzard's worked example of a campsite object chain, and it starts early: you can learn your first object at skill 20.

Materials, skill levels and quest details below come from the beta build and Blizzard's BlizzCon slides; they can still change before launch.

The camp chain

Object Blacksmithing Effect Crafting
Sharpening Wheel 20 Strength; does not stack with Strength of Earth Totem rough stone + copper bar
Anvil 140 Same buff plus an anvil 5 bronze bars, 2 coarse grinding stones, 2 medium leather
Master Forge 300 Same buff plus a forge for recipes that require it 1 golem heart, 5 thorium bars, 2 rugged leather

Every version requires a campfire nearby and shares the one-hour cooldown on camping features. The Anvil and Master Forge tooltips both say they can replace a Sharpening Wheel and keep its buff.

Blizzard's written recap calls the wheel an Attack Power buff, but the BlizzCon slide and the beta client's tooltip say Strength, exclusive with Strength of Earth Totem. The table follows the beta client.

Camping 101: Blacksmithing

The BlizzCon Deep Dive showed the intro quest from Smith Argus. It teaches you to craft the Sharpening Wheel. The preview shows a 270-XP reward, not a confirmed reward for every character level. Its instructions are straightforward: test your object outside town, and remember that a camp needs a fire — most cooks can teach you to make one.

What you're crafting

The tradeskill slide showed where Blacksmithing recipes land while leveling:

Plan Blacksmithing Item
Crusader's Boots 85 level 17 mail feet, Strength and Stamina
Officer's Pauldrons 210 level 42 plate shoulders
Enriched Thorium Breastplate 300 level 57 plate chest with Defense and spell damage

The level-57 plan uses new Forever materials — Legionite Bar, Heavy Thorium Bar and Azerothium Bar — so don't build a shopping list from an Era Blacksmithing guide.

Your camp job

  • Learn the wheel at 20 and carry the materials to make it.
  • At 140, keep an Anvil kit in your bags: same buff, plus the station.
  • At 300, bring a Master Forge when your recipe specifically requires one.
  • If your group already has the Strength of Earth buff, the buff slot is covered; the Anvil or Master Forge still earns a place as a workstation.
