Spells deal 30% more damage and cost 30% more mana for 15s on a 3-minute cooldown. Use during stationary burn windows once tank threat lead is secure.

Is Arcane Mage worth a raid spot?
Top-tier burst and sustained caster DPS when supported by Shadow Priest (Vampiric Touch), Resto Shaman (Mana Tide Totem), and Innervate; scales with external mana support.

Arcane

21 pointsRotation priority
- Cast Arcane Blast continuously as your primary nuke during burn phases while mana, cooldowns, and encounter length support it.
- When conserving mana, cast up to 3 Arcane Blasts, then cast Frostbolts until the 8-second Arcane Blast aura expires before your next Arcane Blast finishes (typically 3 Frostbolts, or 4 under high haste like Icy Veins or Bloodlust/Heroism).
- Use Clearcasting on your next useful damage cast. A high-stack Arcane Blast saves substantial mana during a burn, but do not interrupt a cast or repeatedly reset the 8-second aura during conservation just to chase that saving.
- Transition into a full Arcane Blast burn near the end of the encounter to finish with empty mana right as the boss dies.
- Maintain Mage Armor when mana sustainability limits your burn; switch to Molten Armor only when mana is fully covered by group support and kill times.
- Use Arcane Explosion for close-range AoE packs, or Blizzard and Flamestrike when ranged positioning or mechanics require area damage.
- Queue every cast in the client spell queue window and cover necessary repositioning with Blink or instant Presence of Mind.
Opener
- Apply Mage Armor (or Molten Armor) and Arcane Brilliance before pull.
- Pre-cast Arcane Blast at max range to land right after the tank establishes initial threat.
- Activate Arcane Power, Icy Veins, and throughput trinkets once tank threat lead and Blessing of Salvation are secure.
- If using a mana-to-spell-power on-use trinket or mana gem, trigger Mana Emerald once your missing mana can absorb the full restore without overcapping.
- Use Presence of Mind for a low-stack Arcane Blast while building stacks, or save it for movement. At 3 stacks the normal cast is already close to the spell GCD, so making it instant adds little stationary casting time.
- Coordinate threat carefully; use Invisibility preemptively if threat approaches dangerous levels.
Cooldowns
+20% spell casting speed and 100% pushback resistance for 20s on a 3-minute cooldown; pair with Arcane Power in stationary burns, staggering if Bloodlust would push casts below the 1.0s GCD floor.
Instantly finishes the cooldowns of recently cast Frost spells on an 8-minute cooldown; use to gain a second Icy Veins on longer encounters, or hold as an emergency reset for Ice Block.
Makes your next Mage spell with a cast time under 10 seconds instant on a 3-minute cooldown. Use for a low-stack Arcane Blast or movement; the instant damage spell still triggers its GCD.
Restores 60% total mana over an 8-second channel on an 8-minute cooldown; channel during forced boss downtime, phase transitions, or safe low-damage windows.

Gems and socket bonuses
Arcane is the exception to the usual caster red-gem default: intellect is a strong starting point for both mana and damage through Mind Mastery. Keep your meta active, cover the hit target for your actual talents, then compare intellect with spell power for your fight length.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Chaotic Skyfire Diamond |
Improves damaging spell crits. Use blue-counting gems to activate it; it does not make damage-over-time ticks crit. Requires: At least 2 blue gems. |
| Default | Brilliant Lionseye
Budget: Brilliant Dawnstone |
Intellect supports a larger mana pool, regeneration and Mind Mastery. It can be worth placing in red sockets with weak bonuses. |
| Meta / sustain | Sparkling Empyrean Sapphire
Budget: Sparkling Star of Elune |
A blue-counting Spirit option for meta activation and regeneration. Use only as many as your setup needs. |
| Meta / survival | Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Glowing Nightseye |
A blue-counting alternative when spell power and stamina are more useful than Spirit. |
| Hit correction | Veiled Pyrestone
Budget: Veiled Noble Topaz |
Use only to cover a real spell-hit shortfall; Arcane Focus makes Arcane’s target different from Fire or Frost. |
| Spell power | Runed Crimson Spinel
Budget: Runed Living Ruby |
Compare with intellect when mana is comfortable or a useful red-socket bonus narrows the tradeoff. |
| Meta alternative | Insightful Earthstorm Diamond |
A mana-return option for sustained casting when mana is limiting damage; compare it with Chaotic rather than assuming every mana proc is useful. Requires: At least 2 red, 2 yellow, and 2 blue gems. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- A red socket does not force you to use a red gem. Compare the whole result with Brilliant Lionseye, including the socket bonus and the value of your mana pool. For Chaotic Skyfire Diamond, satisfy its blue requirement with Spirit or spell-power/stamina gems before filling spare sockets with intellect.
When to swap gems
- Changing talents or switching to Fire/Frost: recalculate spell hit before reusing the same gems. Arcane Focus does not cover your other spell schools.
- Longer burns or weaker mana support: favor enough intellect and regeneration to sustain the rotation. Shorter fights may change the spell-power comparison.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Review Arcane Blast burn count vs Frostbolt conserve ratio across each encounter phase.
- Confirm the 8-second Arcane Blast aura expired before the next Arcane Blast finished during conservation; starting that cast just before expiry can retain the shorter cast time without paying the stacked cost.
- Track mana timeline: verify early usage of Mana Emerald, Super Mana Potion, Dark Rune, and uninterrupted 8-second Evocation channels.
- Check Clearcasting use during burns without disrupting Frostbolt conservation cycles or interrupting casts.
- Verify Arcane Power and Icy Veins alignment with Bloodlust without dipping below the 1.0s GCD cap.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- Use Mana Emerald early once missing mana can absorb the full restore without overcapping, allowing the 2-minute cooldown to start ticking; align any mana-to-spell-power trinket procs with planned burns.
- Set and verify client spell queue window; queue the next Arcane Blast before current cast completes to eliminate dead time.
- When conserving, track the 8-second Arcane Blast aura; ensure the stack drops before the next Arcane Blast finishes so it casts at base mana cost.
- Coordinate Innervates and Mana Tide Totems with your healers and Shamans around your burn phases.
- Use Invisibility before reaching the aggro threshold and allow its 5-second fade to finish; taking damage or performing an action cancels the fade.
Common mistakes
- Burning all mana with continuous Arcane Blasts too early on long fights without sufficient external mana support.
- Finishing the next Arcane Blast before the 8-second aura expires during conservation, paying high-stack mana costs unnecessarily.
- Interrupting casts or breaking conservation cycles to force every Clearcasting proc into a high-stack Arcane Blast.
- Channeling Evocation during active boss movement or high raid damage and getting interrupted.
- Overcapping mana by using Mana Emerald or Super Mana Potion while sitting near full mana.
