Increases Fire spell critical strike chance by 10% per landed Fire-damage hit until 3 critical strikes land on a 3-minute cooldown (cooldown begins after the 3rd crit lands). Ensure charges are consumed by full-damage Fireballs rather than Scorch or Fire Blast.
Fire Mage PvE DPS Guide — TBC Classic
Fire Mages deliver sustained single-target and execute DPS through Fireball, rolling Ignite Fire damage-over-time effects from critical strikes, and Improved Scorch (+15% Fire damage) debuff support. This TBC Anniversary guide covers the 10/48/3 build, rotation priority, Combustion usage, stat caps, and log review.
Is Fire Mage worth a raid spot?
Strong sustained caster DPS; provides Improved Scorch (+15% Fire damage taken on the target) to benefit all Fire damage, with strong execute scaling via Molten Fury.

- If assigned Scorch duty, stack Improved Scorch to 5 stacks on pull (+15% Fire damage taken on the target); refresh with a 5–8 second buffer before the debuff expires. Skip Scorch if another Mage is maintaining it or on short-lived adds.
- Cast Fireball as your primary single-target filler.
- When Clearcasting procs from Arcane Concentration, cast Fireball for a free-mana nuke.
- Use Fire Blast during forced movement or for immediate add burst; avoid clipping Fireballs or casting it on cooldown if mana is constrained.
- Ignite is personal to each Mage (rolling 40% of crit damage over 4s); keep Fireball casting steady without altering rotation for other Fire casters.
- For AoE, layer Rank 7 Flamestrike followed by Rank 6 Flamestrike for stacked ground patches; weave in Blast Wave and Dragon's Breath when in range. Baseline Blizzard supplies ranged AoE damage only—its slow requires Improved Blizzard, which this build does not take.
- In execute phase (<20% boss health), leverage Molten Fury (+20% damage) with remaining cooldowns and potions.
Opener
- Apply Molten Armor and Arcane Brilliance before pull.
- Pre-cast Fireball at max range to land right after the tank establishes initial threat.
- If assigned to Scorch, cast Scorch consecutively until 5 stacks of Improved Scorch (+15% Fire damage taken) are applied; if not assigned, continue casting Fireball immediately.
- Activate Combustion, throughput trinkets, and Destruction Potion once threat is secure. Plan an available use for the sub-20% Molten Fury window without losing an earlier cooldown use.
- Transition into standard Fireball casting, refreshing Scorch with a 5–8 second safety buffer remaining.
Cooldowns
Reduces threat during a 5-second fade and clears it when invisibility completes, on a 5-minute cooldown. Taking damage or performing an action cancels the fade; use proactively during a safe window.
5-minute cooldown. Provides complete immunity to survive fatal mechanics or drop temporary fixates; cancel immediately to resume casting.
Stat caps
127
All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 3/3 Elemental Precision.
13% from gear (164 rating) without external hit support.
10% from gear (127 rating) with only Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group.
12% from gear (152 rating) with only Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.
9% from gear (114 rating) with Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group and Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.
The listed requirement reaches the attainable spell-hit cap; spells retain the unavoidable miss floor.
No hard cap
Ignite adds 40% over 4 seconds from spell crits; critical strikes sustain the Ignite rolling debuff and trigger Master of Elements (30% base mana refund).
No hard cap
Spell Power scales Fireball (1.15 direct-damage coefficient with 5/5 Empowered Fireball) and Scorch (0.429). Haste reduces Fireball cast time (3.0s talented) down toward the 1.0-second GCD floor; evaluate against mana sustainability.

Gems and socket bonuses
Activate your meta, cover spell hit for the talents and raid support you actually have, then favor spell power. Use hybrids where the secondary stat and socket bonus together are worth the spell power you give up.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Chaotic Skyfire Diamond |
Improves damaging spell crits. Use blue-counting gems to activate it; it does not make damage-over-time ticks crit. Requires: At least 2 blue gems. |
| Default | Runed Crimson Spinel
Budget: Runed Living Ruby |
The usual spare-socket choice once spell hit and meta colors are covered. |
| Hit correction | Veiled Pyrestone
Budget: Veiled Noble Topaz |
Adds spell hit while retaining some spell power. Replace it when the complete set no longer needs that hit. |
| Crit option | Potent Pyrestone
Budget: Potent Noble Topaz |
Consider for crit-friendly casting or a worthwhile yellow-socket bonus. Compare with pure spell power in the full set. |
| Meta colors | Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Glowing Nightseye |
Supplies blue for meta activation while retaining spell power and adding stamina. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- Match a socket when the total gain is useful, not simply because the colors line up. Hit gems lose their offensive value above the relevant spell-hit cap. Put the blue-counting gems needed for Chaotic Skyfire Diamond into sockets with useful bonuses where possible.
-
A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +2 spell power bonus, Runed Crimson Spinel adds 12 spell power. Veiled Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 8 spell power. You trade 4 spell power for 5 spell-hit rating.Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.
When to swap gems
- After changing hit gear, talents or raid support: recalculate the hit target, then trade hit gems and spell-power gems as needed. Only count Inspiring Presence and Totem of Wrath when their spell-hit bonuses are actually available in your party; Improved Faerie Fire does not provide caster spell hit.
- For unavoidable damage: keep enough stamina to survive, using blue-counting spell-power/stamina gems where they also satisfy your meta.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Verify Improved Scorch 5-stack uptime throughout the fight and check that refreshes occurred before stacks expired.
- Review Fireball cast volume per active minute and minimize casting gaps during movement.
- Check Combustion charge consumption to confirm all 3 crits landed on Fireballs, and evaluate alignment with Molten Fury (<20%).
- Review rolling Ignite tick damage and ensure uptime was maintained through steady casting.
- Inspect mana timeline and the balance between Flame Cap, Mana Emerald, and potion usage.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- If assigned Scorch, refresh the 5-stack debuff when 5–8 seconds remain to absorb resists or movement; do not waste globals stacking Scorch on short-lived adds.
- TBC Ignite is personal to each Mage; maintain continuous Fireball casting without altering crit timing for other Fire casters in the raid.
- Flame Cap provides up to 80 Fire spell power for 1 minute on a 3-minute cooldown, but shares a cooldown category with Mana Gems; use Flame Cap when mana is healthy and Mana Emerald when sustain is required.
- Align available cooldowns and Destruction Potion with Molten Fury's +20% damage below 20% boss health, without giving up an additional earlier use.
- Manage rolling Ignite threat: consecutive Fireball crits generate massive threat spikes; use Invisibility proactively before overtaking the tank.
Common mistakes
- Letting the 5-stack Improved Scorch debuff drop by delaying refreshes until the final seconds.
- Activating Combustion and consuming the 3 crit charges with low-damage Scorch or Fire Blast casts instead of Fireballs.
- Interrupting or clipping active Fireball casts to force instant Fire Blast uses.
- Overwriting a required Mana Emerald cooldown by popping Flame Cap when mana is already depleted.
- Assuming Ignite is shared across multiple Fire Mages; each Mage generates their own personal rolling Ignite pool.
