3-minute cooldown, 10-second duration; converts up to 10 rage per second into health (up to 250 HP/sec, restoring up to 2,500 health over 10s) as emergency self-healing.
Feral Druid PvE Tank Guide — TBC Classic
Feral Bear Druids provide immense physical mitigation through armor scaling, massive health pools, and reliable single-target threat through Mangle, Lacerate, and Maul. This TBC Anniversary guide covers the 0/44/17 build, mitigation thresholds, threat priority, cooldowns, and log review.
Is Feral Tank Druid worth a raid spot?
Feral Bear is one of the premier tank specializations in TBC, offering massive effective health through Stamina scaling, armor approaching the computed mitigation cap shown above, and exceptional single-target threat through Mangle, Lacerate, and Maul. When not actively tanking, a Feral Druid shifts into Cat Form to contribute meaningful melee DPS while providing Leader of the Pack and Improved Leader of the Pack party support.

- Cast Mangle (Bear) on cooldown as your primary single-target threat ability and bleed amplifier (costs 15 rage with 5/5 Ferocity).
- Apply Lacerate (costs 13 rage) to build up to 5 stacks on the primary target, then refresh every 10–12s before the 15-second bleed duration expires.
- Queue Maul (costs 10 rage with 5/5 Ferocity) only when your rage reserve safely covers the upcoming Mangle (15 rage), Lacerate (13 rage), or emergency taunt/pickup; cancel the queue (/stopcasting) if rage drops below reserve thresholds. Maul also replaces a white attack, so you lose the rage that normal hit would have generated.
- Cast Swipe (costs 15 rage with 5/5 Ferocity; strikes up to 3 targets) in Mangle cooldown gaps once 5 stacks of Lacerate are secure and rage is plentiful.
- Maintain Faerie Fire (Feral) while closing range and maintain Demoralizing Roar on melee bosses if not covered by a Warrior; do not overwrite a Balance Druid's Improved Faerie Fire (+3% physical hit).
- When Omen of Clarity procs Clearcasting, spend the proc on Mangle first when ready, otherwise Lacerate or Swipe, using saved rage to fuel a queued Maul.
- On packs, use Swipe for up to 3 targets and switch targets to spread Mangle and Maul threat. Do not spend five globals stacking Lacerate on every short-lived add.
Opener
- Activate Omen of Clarity and enter Bear Form before the pull.
- Activate Enrage safely while closing: with 3/3 Intensity, Enrage grants 10 rage immediately plus 20 rage over 10 seconds (total 30 rage) to fuel an immediate opening Mangle.
- Cast Faerie Fire (Feral) while running in to tag the boss at range.
- Cast Mangle (Bear) immediately upon reaching melee range (costs 15 rage).
- Apply Lacerate to begin stacking the bleed, and queue Maul on auto-attacks conditionally only when rage reserve securely covers follow-up Mangles (15 rage) and Lacerates (13 rage).
- Drink an Ironshield Potion (+2,500 armor for 2m) after combat begins if facing heavy physical spike damage.
Cooldowns
Reduces damage taken by 20% for 12 seconds on a 1-minute cooldown, but requires leaving Bear Form. Use only before engagement or during a safe off-tank transition; never drop Bear Form while taking boss melee hits just to activate it.
1-minute cooldown, 10-second duration; generates 10 rage instantly with 3/3 Intensity plus 20 rage over 10s (30 total rage). Reduces base armor by 16% in Dire Bear Form (-27% in Bear Form); use on pull or during low physical damage windows.

2.6% crit reduction needed from gear
Use defense, resilience, or a mix to cover the remaining crit chance. The plate-tank defense-skill target does not apply to bears.
35,880
75% physical damage reduction
Armor past this mitigation limit adds no further physical damage reduction against the selected target level.
142
9% needed from gear
The listed requirement caps this physical hit profile against the selected target level.
103
6.5% dodge removed · 7.5% parry remains from front
Expertise reduces boss dodge and parry together. The listed dodge-cap target removes 6.5% from both; 7.5% parry remains from the front. Fully removing parry would require 56 expertise before talents and racials.

Gems and socket bonuses
Choose gems for the job: maintain boss crit immunity, then balance health, mitigation and threat. Stamina is a reliable survival option, but filling every socket with it can leave a real defensive or threat gap elsewhere.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Powerful Earthstorm Diamond |
A stamina-focused survival meta. Blue and blue-counting hybrid gems can satisfy its requirement. Requires: At least 3 blue gems. |
| Survival | Solid Empyrean Sapphire
Budget: Solid Star of Elune |
Adds health against both physical and magical damage. Use when surviving burst is the priority. |
| Crit immunity | Enduring Seaspray Emerald | Defense and stamina in one gem. Helps close a boss crit-immunity gap and can preserve a useful yellow-socket bonus. |
| Physical survival | Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Shifting Nightseye |
Agility and stamina add physical avoidance and health; agility also supports armor and crit. |
| Avoidance / threat | Delicate Crimson Spinel
Budget: Delicate Living Ruby |
An agility option when your health pool is comfortable and you want more physical avoidance and offensive stats. |
| Physical hit | Glinting Pyrestone
Budget: Glinting Noble Topaz |
Use for a meaningful physical-hit gap once survival needs are met; compare against the stamina or defense being replaced. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- Take socket bonuses when the gem and the bonus serve the set’s job. A defense/stamina hybrid can be worth more than pure stamina if it keeps you crit-immune; after that need is covered, a tiny bonus is not automatically worth giving up health.
-
A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +3 stamina bonus, Solid Empyrean Sapphire adds 15 stamina. Enduring Seaspray Emerald plus the bonus adds 10 stamina. You trade 5 stamina for 5 defense rating.Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.
When to swap gems
- After changing gear: account for Survival of the Fittest and the combined defense/resilience result. Crit immunity does not make a bear uncrushable.
- Once survival is comfortable: move a few gems toward threat or avoidance for that encounter. Keep a survival setup for heavier burst damage.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Verify critical strike immunity: check that 0 critical strikes were taken from level-73 bosses.
- Check Mangle cooldown usage and Lacerate 5-stack uptime across the fight (aim for 95%+ uptime).
- Review Maul queue frequency relative to rage availability (ensure Maul did not starve Mangle or Lacerate refreshes).
- Review Frenzied Regeneration, Ironshield Potion, and trinket timing. If Barkskin was used, verify the caster-form transition happened safely before taking boss melee hits.
- Track Growl and Feral Charge reaction time on loose adds or tank swaps.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- Use the computed crit-immunity card above whenever you swap gear; Survival of the Fittest reduces the requirement, and Defense or Resilience can cover the remainder.
- Queue Maul only when rage reserve safely covers the next Mangle (15 rage), Lacerate (13 rage), or emergency pickup; cancel the queue with a /stopcasting macro if rage dips below your safety margin.
- Barkskin requires leaving Bear Form. Plan it before the pull or while another tank holds the boss, then return to Dire Bear Form before taking melee hits.
- Activate Enrage before engagement or during low-damage phases to gain 30 rage (10 instantly via 3/3 Intensity + 20 over 10s); avoid pressing Enrage right before massive unmitigated physical hits due to the -16% base armor penalty in Dire Bear Form.
- Frenzied Regeneration converts up to 10 rage/sec into 250 health/sec over 10s (up to 2,500 HP total); use it to stabilize health during heavy damage or healer downtime.
- Growl and Faerie Fire (Feral) use the spell-hit table; melee hit does not improve their reliability.
- Keep the 30-minute Omen of Clarity buff active at all times.
Common mistakes
- Swapping threat gear without rechecking the computed boss crit-immunity target, exposing yourself to fatal critical strikes.
- Leaving Maul permanently queued at low rage, starving the rage needed for Mangle and Lacerate refreshes.
- Letting 5-stack Lacerate expire, losing sustained bleed threat and wasting globals rebuilding stacks.
- Assuming the armor mitigation cap shown above eliminates crushing blows; bears cannot block or parry and must absorb crushes through large health pools and high dodge.
- Using Enrage immediately before a heavy physical boss strike, suffering increased spike damage due to the -16% base armor penalty in Dire Bear Form.
- Leaving Bear Form for Barkskin while actively taking boss melee hits, losing Bear armor and health during the transition.
