Assassination Rogue BiS

Is Assassination Rogue worth a raid spot?

Niche single-target physical and Nature DPS role in TBC raiding. Requires dual daggers, strict rear positioning, and poison-vulnerable targets. While Combat generally delivers higher sustained physical throughput and standard Improved Expose Armor support, Assassination provides concentrated single-target burst through Find Weakness (+10% offensive-ability damage for 10 seconds after a finishing move), Cold Blood critical finishers, and dual-dagger Mutilate combo point generation.

Rotation priority

  1. Keep Slice and Dice active, using low combo points on pull or for an emergency refresh and longer durations when needed for your finisher cycle. Finishing moves activate Find Weakness for 10 seconds, increasing offensive ability damage by 10%; it does not increase auto-attack damage.
  2. Ensure a poison debuff is active on the target before casting Mutilate so it gains its +50% poisoned-target damage bonus; apply via off-hand auto-attack or an initial Shiv.
  3. Cast Mutilate (60 energy) from behind as your primary builder against poisoned targets, generating 2 combo points (3 on critical strike with Seal Fate).
  4. Cast Rupture at 4–5 combo points when Slice and Dice is rolling, Find Weakness is active, and the target will survive the bleed duration (14s at 4 CP, 16s at 5 CP).
  5. Cast Eviscerate at 4–5 combo points as a direct damage finisher when Rupture is active or the target will die before Rupture completes.
  6. Cast Envenom only for an intentional Deadly Poison-dose trade or armor-ignoring burst; in TBC, Envenom consumes 1 dose of Deadly Poison per combo point and provides no application buff.
  7. Use Shiv (with Deadly Poison on the off hand) only to quickly establish or refresh a fading 5-stack of Deadly Poison.

Opener

Garrote Slice and Dice Mutilate Cold Blood Haste Potion
  1. Approach from stealth behind the boss and open with Garrote only when encounter mechanics and assigned plans safely allow; otherwise engage directly from behind.
  2. After Garrote, spend its combo point on Slice and Dice. If you opened without a stealth attack, first build a combo point with Shiv or Mutilate, then apply Slice and Dice.
  3. Confirm that the target has an active poison debuff (via off-hand auto swing or quick Shiv), then cast Mutilate from behind to generate 2–3 combo points.
  4. Build to 4–5 combo points with Mutilate and cast Rupture or Eviscerate to refresh Find Weakness.
  5. Activate Cold Blood, racial cooldowns, and Haste Potion during Bloodlust/Heroism with Find Weakness active.

Cooldowns

Cold Blood

3-minute cooldown. Guarantees a critical strike on your next offensive ability (best paired with a 5-point Eviscerate, 5-point Envenom, or Mutilate during Find Weakness and Bloodlust).

Find Weakness

Finishing moves activate a 10-second buff that increases offensive ability damage by 10%. Auto-attacks do not receive this bonus, and Mutilate does not activate it. Pool energy before a finisher when timers allow so the following Mutilate casts fit inside the buff.

Vanish

Drops combat and threat instantly; allows an in-combat re-stealth for an extra opener when encounter mechanics permit.

Stat caps

Special Attack Hit Cap

64 Hit Rating

All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 5/5 Precision.

4% from gear (64 rating) without external hit support.

1% from gear (16 rating) with only Improved Faerie Fire (+3%) on target.

3% from gear (48 rating) with only Draenei Heroic Presence (+1%) in your group.

0% from gear (0 rating) with Improved Faerie Fire (+3%) on target and Draenei Heroic Presence (+1%) in your group.

The listed requirement caps this physical hit profile against the selected target level.

Expertise Cap (Behind Boss)

103 26 Expertise Skill (103 Rating)

6.5% boss dodge cap

The rear expertise cap removes boss dodge. Attacks from behind cannot be parried; weapon racials apply only with the listed weapon types.

Poison Spell Hit Cap

202 Spell Hit Rating

All breakpoints vs Boss (73).

16% from gear (202 rating) without external hit support.

13% from gear (164 rating) with only Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group.

15% from gear (190 rating) with only Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.

12% from gear (152 rating) with Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group and Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.

The listed requirement reaches the attainable spell-hit cap; spells retain the unavoidable miss floor.

Dual-Wield White Hit Cap

363 Hit Rating

All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 5/5 Precision.

23% from gear (363 rating) without external hit support.

20% from gear (316 rating) with only Improved Faerie Fire (+3%) on target.

22% from gear (347 rating) with only Draenei Heroic Presence (+1%) in your group.

19% from gear (300 rating) with Improved Faerie Fire (+3%) on target and Draenei Heroic Presence (+1%) in your group.

Dual-wield auto-attacks use the white-swing miss table. Hit continues to help white swings, but hard-capping them is usually weaker than other throughput stats.

Gems and socket bonuses

Rogues can still benefit from hit after special attacks are capped because dual-wield white swings have a higher miss chance. Compare hit and agility in your complete set; do not automatically replace every hit gem as soon as yellow attacks stop missing.

Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.

Type Gem Use
Meta Relentless Earthstorm Diamond The physical-damage meta. Activate it before chasing small socket bonuses; purple, orange and green hybrids can cover its colors.

Requires: At least 2 red, 2 yellow, and 2 blue gems.

Damage Delicate Crimson Spinel

Budget: Delicate Living Ruby

Agility is a flexible damage choice once your hit needs and meta colors are covered.
Hit correction Glinting Pyrestone

Budget: Glinting Noble Topaz

Adds hit while retaining agility. Useful when the full set needs more hit, including after a gear or talent swap.
More hit Rigid Lionseye

Budget: Rigid Dawnstone

Can improve white-swing hit after specials are capped. Compare with agility for your build instead of copying Combat’s hit-heavy setup.
Meta colors Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst

Budget: Shifting Nightseye

A purple hybrid supplies red and blue for the meta while retaining a useful damage stat.
Meta / bonus Jagged Seaspray Emerald

Budget: Jagged Talasite

A crit hybrid can complete meta colors or a useful socket bonus; compare the total with your normal damage gem.

When to match sockets

  • Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
  • Satisfy meta colors first, preferably in sockets with useful bonuses. A small bonus may not repay the damage stat you sacrifice to match it. For Relentless Earthstorm Diamond, two purple and two orange hybrids are one way to cover all three required colors.
  • A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +2 agility bonus, Delicate Crimson Spinel adds 10 agility. Glinting Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 7 agility. You trade 3 agility for 5 hit rating.

Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.

When to swap gems

  • After a gear or Precision change: check special attacks and white swings separately. Hit above the special-attack cap can still be useful; it is not automatically wasted.
  • For unavoidable damage or a mixed survival assignment: use a damage/stamina hybrid where the added health matters.
  • After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Reviewing your logs

DPS tier list

  • Review whether Mutilate and direct-damage finishers landed during Find Weakness, and whether pooling caused energy capping or Slice and Dice downtime.
  • Verify 5-stack Deadly Poison uptime on the primary boss.
  • Inspect Slice and Dice and Rupture uptime across the encounter.
  • Review Cold Blood and Haste Potion alignment with Bloodlust and active Find Weakness.
  • Separate Mutilate misses and dodges from poison spell resists/misses to verify special hit and expertise caps.

Tips and Common Mistakes

Practical tips

  • Always position strictly behind the boss; Mutilate requires rear positioning and cannot be cast from the front or flanks.
  • Never cast Mutilate on an unpoisoned target; verify an active poison debuff so Mutilate gains its +50% damage bonus.
  • Pool energy before a finisher when Slice and Dice and bleed timers allow, then spend it on Mutilate during the 10-second Find Weakness window. Avoid energy capping or refreshing Slice and Dice early merely to renew Find Weakness.
  • Mutilate attacks with both daggers, so off-hand weapon damage matters as well as poison frequency. Compare the complete dagger pair; a fast off hand improves poison application and reduces Shiv cost, while a slower off hand can increase Mutilate damage.
  • With Windfury Totem assigned, leave your main-hand dagger unpoisoned to receive the Windfury imbue, and apply Deadly Poison VII to your off hand; without Windfury, run Instant Poison VII on main hand and Deadly Poison VII on off hand (never swap weapons mid-combat).

Common mistakes

  • Attempting to cast Mutilate from the front or flanks, causing failed casts.
  • Casting Mutilate before a poison debuff is active on the target, losing the +50% damage bonus.
  • Assuming Mutilate triggers Find Weakness, neglecting regular finishing moves.
  • Applying poison to the main-hand dagger when grouped with a Windfury Totem Shaman, blocking the Windfury imbue.
  • Using Envenom without an intentional Deadly Poison-dose trade; it consumes 1 dose per combo point.
  • Allowing Slice and Dice to drop while waiting for 5 combo points instead of refreshing with an immediate low-point finisher.
