Arms Warrior BiS

Is Arms Warrior worth a raid spot?

Exactly one Arms Warrior is standard in physical-heavy raid compositions to apply and maintain Blood Frenzy (+4% physical damage taken by the target from all raid members). Bringing a second Arms Warrior is rarely optimal as the debuff does not stack.

Rotation priority

  1. Maintain Blood Frenzy (+4% physical damage taken) on the boss at all times using Rend or Deep Wounds critical procs; Mortal Strike alone does not apply Blood Frenzy unless it crits or Rend is active.
  2. Cast Slam immediately following a main-hand auto-attack swing; Slam has a 0.5-second cast time that resets your swing timer, so never cast Slam immediately before a white swing.
  3. After Slam, use Mortal Strike when ready (6-second cooldown), leaving room to Slam after the next swing.
  4. Use Whirlwind (10-second cooldown, Berserker Stance) in the gaps after Slam when Mortal Strike is unavailable and rage permits.
  5. When a boss dodges, swap to Battle Stance and cast Overpower if rage is low (≤10 rage, as excess rage is lost without Tactical Mastery) and the swap does not clip an auto-attack swing; return to Berserker Stance for Whirlwind.
  6. Queue Heroic Strike (/startattack + /cast Heroic Strike) strictly as a surplus rage dump (70+ rage); cancel the queue (/stopcasting) before the swing if rage is needed for Mortal Strike, Whirlwind, or Slam.
  7. Below 20%, retain the swing→Slam rotation and use Execute in spare globals after Mortal Strike and Whirlwind, preserving rage for the next cycle. When movement prevents Slam, use Mortal Strike, Whirlwind, then Execute.
  8. Coordinate armor-reduction coverage (Sunder Armor / Devastate with a Warrior, or Improved Expose Armor with a Rogue) and attack-power reduction (Demoralizing Shout with a Warrior vs. Demoralizing Roar with a Feral Druid).

Opener

Bloodrage Rend Slam Mortal Strike Death Wish Haste Potion
  1. Pop Bloodrage immediately before pull if entering combat without pooled rage.
  2. If assigned immediate Blood Frenzy coverage, apply Rend in Battle Stance before switching to Berserker Stance; otherwise establish it through Deep Wounds on your first melee critical strike.
  3. Cast Slam immediately after your first main-hand swing, once you have enough rage.
  4. Follow Slam with Mortal Strike on the next available global cooldown, then fit Whirlwind into later swing cycles.
  5. Activate Death Wish, racial cooldowns, on-use trinkets, and Haste Potion to align with raid Bloodlust/Heroism once tank threat is stable.

Cooldowns

Death Wish

3-minute base cooldown (unaffected by Improved Disciplines); 30-second duration granting +20% physical damage and Fear immunity (+5% damage taken). Align with Bloodlust, trinkets, and Haste Potion during burn phases.

Sweeping Strikes

30-second cooldown; causes your next 10 melee attacks to hit an additional nearby enemy. Activate on 2-target situations before Whirlwind and Mortal Strike.

Recklessness

30-minute base cooldown (reduced to 23 minutes with 2/3 Improved Disciplines, 19-second duration); guarantees melee criticals (+20% damage taken). Use in Berserker Stance during burn phases when tank threat is secure.

Stat caps

Special Attack Hit Cap

95 Hit Rating

All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 0/3 Precision.

9% from gear (142 rating) without external hit support.

6% from gear (95 rating) with only Improved Faerie Fire (+3%) on target.

8% from gear (127 rating) with only Draenei Heroic Presence (+1%) in your group.

5% from gear (79 rating) with Improved Faerie Fire (+3%) on target and Draenei Heroic Presence (+1%) in your group.

The listed requirement caps this physical hit profile against the selected target level.

Expertise Cap (Behind Boss)

71 18 Expertise Skill (71 Rating)

6.5% boss dodge cap

The rear expertise cap removes boss dodge. Attacks from behind cannot be parried; weapon racials apply only with the listed weapon types.

Weapon speed

3.5+ speed

Slow main-hand weapon (3.5+ speed) maximizes Slam and Mortal Strike weapon-damage coefficients.

Gems and socket bonuses

Keep your meta active and meet the hit target appropriate to your build, then compare damage gems across the whole set. Socket colors are opportunities for useful bonuses, not instructions to match every slot.

Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.

Type Gem Use
Meta Relentless Earthstorm Diamond Use in a meta-socket helmet and keep at least two red, two yellow, and two blue gems counted across equipped gear. Hybrid gems count toward both of their colors.

Requires: At least 2 red, 2 yellow, and 2 blue gems.

Damage Bold Crimson Spinel

Budget: Bold Living Ruby

Strength is a strong starting point for spare sockets; compare against crit or hit where your full set benefits.
Hit correction Glinting Pyrestone

Budget: Glinting Noble Topaz

Adds hit while retaining agility. Useful when the full set needs more hit, including after a gear or talent swap.
Crit option Smooth Lionseye A crit-focused option used in the current set. Compare with strength and hybrids in the full weapon/build setup.
More hit Rigid Lionseye

Budget: Rigid Dawnstone

A concentrated hit option when hybrids do not cover the gap. Stop valuing it at the relevant attack’s hit cap.
Meta colors Sovereign Shadowsong Amethyst

Budget: Sovereign Nightseye

A purple hybrid supplies red and blue for the meta while retaining a useful damage stat.
Meta / bonus Inscribed Pyrestone

Budget: Inscribed Noble Topaz

A crit hybrid can complete meta colors or a useful socket bonus; compare the total with your normal damage gem.

When to match sockets

  • Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
  • Satisfy meta colors first, preferably in sockets with useful bonuses. A small bonus may not repay the damage stat you sacrifice to match it. For Relentless Earthstorm Diamond, two purple and two orange hybrids are one way to cover all three required colors.
  • A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +2 strength bonus, Bold Crimson Spinel adds 10 strength. Inscribed Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 7 strength. You trade 3 strength for 5 crit rating.

Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.

When to swap gems

  • After a weapon, hit item, talent or raid-support change: check your new hit total before buying replacement gems. Keep the meta colors intact while making the correction.
  • For unavoidable damage or a mixed survival assignment: use a damage/stamina hybrid where the added health matters.
  • After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Reviewing your logs

DPS tier list

  • Check Blood Frenzy uptime across the encounter (maintain 98%+ uptime on priority targets via Rend or Deep Wounds).
  • Review Slam casts versus weapon swing times to detect clipped auto-attacks or delayed swings.
  • Verify Mortal Strike and Whirlwind cast counts against encounter duration.
  • Track rage wasted at the 100 rage cap versus rage starvation from excessive Heroic Strike queueing.
  • Inspect alignment of Death Wish, Recklessness, racial abilities, trinkets, and Haste Potions with Bloodlust windows.
  • Review utility globals (Demoralizing Shout, Thunder Clap, Sunder Armor) against assigned raid responsibilities.

Tips and Common Mistakes

Practical tips

  • Start Slam immediately after a main-hand swing. The 0.5-second cast resets the swing timer when it completes; its 1.5-second global cooldown still limits the next ability. Under heavy haste, some swings occur while the global cooldown is active, so follow the actual swing timer.
  • Deep Wounds normally maintains Blood Frenzy through melee critical strikes. If coverage must survive movement, Rend is an option, but it requires Battle or Defensive Stance and switching from Berserker Stance loses rage above your retention limit.
  • With 0/3 Tactical Mastery, stance changes retain at most 10 rage. Overpower needs Battle Stance; Thunder Clap and Spell Reflection work in Battle or Defensive Stance. Spend excess rage before switching when the mechanic allows; return to Berserker Stance for Whirlwind.
  • Two-handed white swings generate large chunks of rage; queue Heroic Strike strictly as a surplus rage dump (70+ rage) and cancel the queue (/stopcasting) if rage drops below what is needed for Mortal Strike, Whirlwind, or Slam.
  • Coordinate armor-reduction coverage (Sunder Armor / Devastate with a Warrior, or Improved Expose Armor with a Rogue) and attack-power reduction (Demoralizing Shout vs. Feral Druid Demoralizing Roar; note that Druids do not provide Thunder Clap).

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Mortal Strike alone applies Blood Frenzy rather than maintaining Rend or Deep Wounds critical procs.
  • Hardcasting Slam right before an auto-attack lands, resetting the swing timer and clipping white damage and rage generation.
  • Swapping stances at high rage without Tactical Mastery, incinerating all rage above 10.
  • Leaving Heroic Strike queued on low rage, starving the next Mortal Strike, Whirlwind, or Slam.
  • Gearing as though Precision were active instead of using the computed Arms hit target for the actual talent and raid-support state.
  • Failing to respec weapon specialization talents when changing weapon types (e.g. Swords vs. Axes vs. Maces).
