Reduces the mana cost of all spells by 50% for 15 seconds on a 3-minute cooldown; activate during expensive, sustained Holy Light casting windows.
Holy Paladin PvE Healing Guide — TBC Classic
Holy Paladins provide dedicated single-target tank sustain through Holy Light, Light's Grace cast-speed reductions, and Illumination critical-heal mana refunds. This TBC Anniversary guide covers the 50/11/0 build, healing rank priority, cooldown plan, stat caps, and log review.
Is Holy Paladin worth a raid spot?
Dedicated single-target tank healer with strong Holy Light throughput, Light's Grace cast-time reduction, Illumination critical-heal mana refunds, blessings, auras, Cleanse, and emergency immunities. A Holy Paladin is usually assigned to a primary tank or priority target; additional Holy Paladins depend on blessing and assignment coverage.

- Maintain Light's Grace (15-second buff) when sustained tank damage is expected. A low-rank Holy Light can prepare it during a lull; subsequent Holy Light casts take 2.0 seconds before haste.
- Use Holy Light for sustained tank healing, choosing the rank for expected damage and available mana. Keep max rank ready for heavy damage; downranking also reduces the benefit from bonus healing.
- Use Flash of Light (1.5-second base cast) for efficient healing when damage is light enough. It still requires standing still; use Holy Shock when you must heal while moving.
- Cast Holy Shock as an instant emergency heal or movement tool on a 15-second cooldown; pair with Divine Favor for a guaranteed critical save.
- Cast Cleanse immediately on high-priority Poison, Disease, and Magic debuffs when dispelling prevents more damage or downtime than a direct heal.
- Pre-cast Holy Light for expected damage. Cancel only if the heal will be unnecessary when it lands; keep casting through sustained heavy damage.
- If assigned, apply Judgement of Light or Wisdom when healing permits. Refresh its 20-second debuff only if it is not already being maintained by Crusader Strike.
Opener
- Coordinate Greater Blessing of Light on the tank (and class group), along with assigned greater blessings (Kings, Wisdom, Might, Salvation) and aura before the pull. Note that Beacon of Light does not exist in TBC.
- Focus-target the main tank and position where you can heal without movement during the pull phase.
- Pre-cast a low-rank Holy Light on the pull to activate Light's Grace immediately, setting Holy Light cast time to 2.0s before haste for the next 15 seconds.
- If assigned, apply Judgement of Light or Wisdom when the pull is safe; coordinate with Retribution so Crusader Strike can maintain it without repeated healing interruptions.
- Activate Divine Illumination (50% mana cost reduction for 15s) during early high-damage phases.
- Use your first Super Mana Potion after combat starts once a sufficient mana deficit (~2,400-3,000 mana) exists; the standard shared 2-minute cooldown starts at use.
Cooldowns
Guarantees a critical strike on your next Holy Light, Flash of Light, or Holy Shock on a 2-minute cooldown; combine with max-rank Holy Light for a massive burst heal or Holy Shock for an instant save, triggering a 60% base mana refund from Illumination.
Emergency heal equal to your maximum health that restores 900 mana to the target and drains all remaining mana. With 2/2 Improved Lay on Hands, grants the target +30% armor from items for 2 minutes on a 40-minute cooldown.
Provides 12 seconds of complete damage immunity on a 5-minute cooldown (doubles melee swing time and causes Forbearance); use proactively to heal through lethal mechanics without interruption.
Stat caps
No hard cap
Intellect increases maximum mana, spell critical strike chance (80 Intellect = 1% spell crit at level 70), and bonus healing via Holy Guidance (35% of Intellect). With 5/5 Illumination, critical heals refund 60% of the spell's base mana cost, making Intellect and crit central to mana sustain.
1.0s GCD floor
Light's Grace reduces Holy Light cast time to 2.0s before haste; haste compresses cast times further toward the 1.0-second global cooldown floor. Balance haste against mana consumption and encounter duration.
No hard cap
+Healing scales every rank of Holy Light and Flash of Light; MP5 provides steady mana regeneration that continues uninterrupted through the five-second rule while actively casting.

Gems and socket bonuses
Holy can gem for healing power, intellect, or a mix. Healing-heavy gems suit efficient healing with manageable mana demands; an intellect-heavy setup can support frequent Holy Light casts. Match your gems to your actual spell usage and kill times.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Insightful Earthstorm Diamond |
The mana-return default for sustained healing. A red-heavy setup still needs enough other colors to keep this active. Requires: At least 2 red, 2 yellow, and 2 blue gems. |
| Healing | Teardrop Crimson Spinel
Budget: Teardrop Living Ruby |
The throughput choice for spare sockets, including yellow or blue sockets whose bonuses do not repay the healing you lose. |
| Intellect | Brilliant Lionseye
Budget: Brilliant Dawnstone |
A mana-pool option for Holy Light-heavy healing; intellect also supports Holy Guidance and spell crit. Compare against healing gems for your assignment. |
| Healing / mana | Luminous Pyrestone
Budget: Luminous Noble Topaz |
Adds intellect while counting as red and yellow. Useful for meta activation, mana support or a worthwhile yellow-socket bonus. |
| Healing / mana | Royal Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Royal Nightseye |
Adds steady MP5 while counting as red and blue. Use for meta activation or when sustained casting needs more mana. |
| Meta alternative | Bracing Earthstorm Diamond |
A throughput alternative when the mana-return meta is no longer useful to you. Recheck its different color requirement before switching. Requires: More red gems than blue gems. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- Do not buy every socket bonus at the cost of healing power. First reserve the hybrids that activate your meta, then compare the bonus and secondary stat with the healing you give up. Two Luminous Pyrestone and two Royal Shadowsong Amethyst cover Insightful Earthstorm Diamond’s color requirements. For Holy, the intellect side of the trade can be valuable; a red gem is not an automatic winner just because its healing number is larger.
-
A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +4 healing bonus, Teardrop Crimson Spinel adds 22 healing. Luminous Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 15 healing. You trade 7 healing for 5 intellect.Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.
When to swap gems
- More sustained Holy Light casting: consider Brilliant Lionseye or Luminous Pyrestone when mana is the limit. For efficient Flash of Light-heavy work, healing gems may offer more useful throughput.
- Shorter kills with mana left over: move optional regeneration gems back toward healing power, while keeping your meta active.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Inspect main tank deaths relative to boss swing timers to evaluate if Holy Light landed, was canceled, or started too late.
- Review Light's Grace buff uptime (target 90%+ during active tank damage phases).
- Review Holy Light rank distribution (downranked maintenance vs max-rank burst) and Flash of Light triage relative to overheal.
- Verify Greater Blessing of Light and assigned Judgement uptime on the tank's target; account for Crusader Strike refreshes rather than expecting a new Judgement every 20 seconds.
- Review mana recovery curve, checking for early Super Mana Potion and Dark Rune usage before running dry.
- Check Cleanse reaction times on dispellable Magic, Poison, and Disease debuffs.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- Time Holy Light to expected tank damage. A missed boss swing is only a reason to cancel if the tank no longer needs the heal and another hit is not imminent.
- Keep several Holy Light ranks available: a cheap rank to prepare Light's Grace during a lull, and stronger ranks for real incoming damage. Choose by healing needed and mana, not a fixed rank for every fight.
- Set up mouseover macros for Cleanse, Blessing of Protection, Blessing of Freedom, and Lay on Hands to eliminate target-switching delay.
- Use a separate hostile-target or focus binding for assigned Judgements. Do not embed /stopcasting in routine healing maintenance or interrupt a needed tank heal just to refresh a debuff already maintained by Crusader Strike.
- Remember that Beacon of Light does not exist in TBC; direct single-target focus, pre-casting, and Light's Grace uptime are your core responsibilities.
- Use your first Super Mana Potion after combat starts once a ~2,400-3,000 mana deficit is reached; the standard shared 2-minute cooldown starts at use.
Common mistakes
- Spamming Flash of Light during heavy tank spike damage that demands pre-cast Holy Light.
- Letting Light's Grace drop and being caught with a slow 2.5-second Holy Light cast during emergency tank damage.
- Forgetting to coordinate Greater Blessing of Light on the tank or dropping assigned Judgement debuffs.
- Delaying the first Mana Potion until near OOM, losing subsequent potion cooldown cycles.
- Stacking spell haste without the mana pool or raid support to sustain the higher cast density.
- Treating raw healing meters as the only metric while ignoring Cleanse duty and defensive utility.
