5-minute cooldown, 15s duration. Doubles energy regeneration rate. Enter below 30 energy to avoid energy capping, especially during Bloodlust/Heroism and haste procs. Align with Blade Flurry and trinkets when available.
Combat Rogue PvE DPS Guide — TBC Classic
Combat Rogues deliver top-tier sustained physical DPS while providing the critical Improved Expose Armor debuff for the physical raid. This TBC Anniversary guide covers the 20/41/0 raid build, energy pooling, rotation priority, cooldown usage, stat caps, and log review.
Is Combat Rogue worth a raid spot?
One Combat Rogue is standard in competitive 25-player raid rosters to maintain Improved Expose Armor (IEA), which provides a stronger flat armor reduction debuff on bosses than Sunder Armor / Devastate, significantly amplifying total raid physical damage. Combat also brings potent single-target throughput and strong two-target cleave damage via Blade Flurry. Additional Combat Rogues provide strong physical DPS scaling with gear and weapon upgrades.

- Keep Slice and Dice active. Use a low-point finisher on pull or to prevent a drop; during the fight, choose enough combo points to cover the next Expose Armor or damage-finisher cycle. Avoid refreshing early and wasting substantial remaining duration.
- Maintain a 5-point Improved Expose Armor if you are the assigned IEA rogue. A 5-point Expose Armor with 2/2 IEA applies 3,075 target armor reduction (exceeding 5 stacks of Sunder Armor at 2,600 armor reduction); refresh before expiration to avoid debuff gaps.
- Cast Sinister Strike as your primary combo-point builder (costs 40 energy with Improved Sinister Strike; Surprise Attacks increases strike damage by 10% and makes finishing moves undodgeable).
- Cast Rupture at 5 combo points when Slice and Dice and IEA are completely secure and the target will survive the full 16-second bleed duration.
- Cast Eviscerate at 5 combo points as a direct damage finisher when Rupture is already active or the target will die before Rupture completes.
- Cast Blade Flurry on cooldown for its +20% attack speed buff (15s duration, 2m cooldown), aligning with 2-target cleave situations whenever secondary targets are present.
- Use Shiv only when necessary to refresh a fading 5-stack of Deadly Poison on the off hand if unlucky swing streaks threaten a stack drop.
Opener
- Open from stealth behind the boss with Garrote only when encounter mechanics and assigned plans safely benefit; otherwise open directly with Sinister Strike from behind.
- Cast an immediate 1- or 2-combo-point Slice and Dice to activate attack speed and start off-hand Combat Potency energy generation.
- Build to 5 combo points with Sinister Strike and apply 5-point Improved Expose Armor if assigned.
- Activate Blade Flurry, Adrenaline Rush, racial abilities, and Haste Potion once tank threat is established and energy room permits.
- Settle into the standard Sinister Strike builder, Slice and Dice, and IEA maintenance cycle, spending surplus combo points on 5-point Rupture or Eviscerate.
Cooldowns
2-minute cooldown, 15s duration. Increases attack speed by 20% and cleaves physical attacks to 1 nearby target. Use on cooldown for single-target haste or align with planned multi-target add phases.
Primary utility cooldown for threat drops or an in-combat positional opener when planned; in TBC, use primarily for threat resets or utility, avoiding mistimed casts that clip ongoing weapon swing timers.
Stat caps

Gems and socket bonuses
Rogues can still benefit from hit after special attacks are capped because dual-wield white swings have a higher miss chance. Compare hit and agility in your complete set; do not automatically replace every hit gem as soon as yellow attacks stop missing.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Relentless Earthstorm Diamond |
The physical-damage meta. Activate it before chasing small socket bonuses; purple, orange and green hybrids can cover its colors. Requires: At least 2 red, 2 yellow, and 2 blue gems. |
| Hit / damage | Rigid Lionseye
Budget: Rigid Dawnstone |
A strong option for improving white-swing hit, especially in Combat. Compare with agility in a full-set sim rather than stopping at the special-attack cap. |
| Hit correction | Glinting Pyrestone
Budget: Glinting Noble Topaz |
Adds hit while retaining agility. Useful when the full set needs more hit, including after a gear or talent swap. |
| Damage | Delicate Crimson Spinel
Budget: Delicate Living Ruby |
Agility is a flexible damage choice once your hit needs and meta colors are covered. |
| Meta colors | Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Shifting Nightseye |
A purple hybrid supplies red and blue for the meta while retaining a useful damage stat. |
| Meta / bonus | Jagged Seaspray Emerald
Budget: Jagged Talasite |
A crit hybrid can complete meta colors or a useful socket bonus; compare the total with your normal damage gem. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- Satisfy meta colors first, preferably in sockets with useful bonuses. A small bonus may not repay the damage stat you sacrifice to match it. For Relentless Earthstorm Diamond, two purple and two orange hybrids are one way to cover all three required colors.
-
A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +2 agility bonus, Delicate Crimson Spinel adds 10 agility. Glinting Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 7 agility. You trade 3 agility for 5 hit rating.Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.
When to swap gems
- After a gear or Precision change: check special attacks and white swings separately. Hit above the special-attack cap can still be useful; it is not automatically wasted.
- For unavoidable damage or a mixed survival assignment: use a damage/stamina hybrid where the added health matters.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Check Slice and Dice uptime (target 98%+ across the encounter).
- Verify Improved Expose Armor uptime if assigned as the IEA rogue (target 95%+ with zero drops).
- Inspect energy management: ensure you never sat at 100 energy during Adrenaline Rush, Blade Flurry, or Bloodlust.
- Review Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush cast efficiency and cooldown delay.
- Check positioning to confirm 100% of attacks landed from behind the boss to eliminate boss parries and prevent parry-haste spikes.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- Pool energy before maintenance finishers, but spend aggressively below capping thresholds during Adrenaline Rush and Bloodlust.
- Equip a slow main-hand weapon (2.6–2.8 speed) for maximum Sinister Strike damage and a fast off-hand weapon (1.4–1.5 speed) to maximize Combat Potency energy procs and Deadly Poison application.
- With Windfury Totem assigned, leave your main-hand weapon unpoisoned to receive the Windfury imbue, and apply Deadly Poison VII to your off hand; without Windfury, run Instant Poison VII on main hand and Deadly Poison VII on off hand.
- Do not swap weapons mid-combat to maintain poisons, as swapping resets that hand's swing timer.
- Use Vanish for a threat drop when approaching tank aggro thresholds, or for an in-combat Garrote opener only when the assigned plan benefits.
Common mistakes
- Letting Improved Expose Armor or Slice and Dice drop, severely crippling physical raid DPS and energy flow.
- Applying poison or sharpening stones to your main-hand weapon when paired with a Windfury Totem Shaman, blocking the Windfury imbue.
- Energy capping during Adrenaline Rush and Bloodlust by entering cooldowns with high pooled energy.
- Attacking from the front or flanks, allowing bosses to parry and trigger parry-haste spike damage on tanks.
- Swapping weapons in combat, which resets that hand's swing timer and loses auto-attack damage.
- Choosing a Slice and Dice duration too short to cover the next builder and finisher cycle, or refreshing while substantial duration remains.
