Reduces mana cost of your next spell by 100% and increases its crit chance by 25% on a 3-minute cooldown; pair with Prayer of Healing or max-rank Greater Heal (Rank 7).
Holy Priest PvE Healing Guide — TBC Classic
Holy Priests deliver premier multi-target raid healing throughput in TBC through Circle of Healing party pulses and bouncing Prayer of Mending triage. This TBC Anniversary guide covers the 20/41/0 CoH build, spell priority, healing rank management, cooldowns, and log review.
Is Holy Priest worth a raid spot?
Usually one Holy Priest is fielded as a premier raid healer focused on party-level multi-target triage with Circle of Healing and Prayer of Mending. A second Holy Priest can be brought on damage-dense encounters when assignments and party layouts support dual multi-target coverage.

- Cast Circle of Healing when at least three party members have meaningful missing health and are within the target's radius (15 yd base; 18 yd with 2/2 Holy Reach). Target a member positioned in the densest injured cluster; Circle of Healing is a party-area pulse, not a smart raid-wide heal.
- Keep Prayer of Mending bouncing during active damage. Cast roughly 10-15 seconds before the pull (30-second duration), then refresh as charges are consumed. Choose a target expected to take damage with bounce targets within 20 yards; preserve useful remaining charges, but recast when it is stranded on someone unlikely to take damage.
- Pre-cast Greater Heal on likely tank targets: use downranked Greater Heal (Rank 1 or Rank 2) for sustainable triage and max-rank Greater Heal (Rank 7) for urgent burst damage. Cancel pre-casts before completion using a stopcasting bind when the heal is not needed to conserve mana and preserve outside-5SR regeneration. Downranked Heal or Greater Heal can fill low-intensity triage; use Flash Heal or Binding Heal for urgent fast saves.
- Use Power Word: Shield when a target may die before a casted heal lands or during heavy movement. Do not pre-shield tanks unnecessarily if it delays PoM procs, though absorbed hits still grant rage in TBC Anniversary. Account for Weakened Soul (15 seconds) before planning follow-up shields.
- Cast Prayer of Healing on your assigned party during heavy synchronized group damage when movement allows the 3.0s cast.
- Cast Renew on targets taking predictable ticking damage, letting full ticks land before refreshing; avoid blanketing targets that other healers will top off instantly with Chain Heal or CoH.
- Cast Flash Heal (or Binding Heal) for fast emergency single-target triage on collapsing raid members; Binding Heal is strong when both the priest and target require immediate stabilization.
Opener
- Ensure assigned buffs (Prayer of Fortitude and Shadow Protection) and Inner Fire are active. This 20/41/0 build cannot cast Divine Spirit; receive it from a priest who has the talent.
- Cast Prayer of Mending on the main tank 10-15 seconds before the pull so it bounces on pull without risk of early expiration.
- Pre-cast Greater Heal (Rank 1/2 or max rank) timed to land immediately following the boss's opening melee swing, ready to cancel if no damage occurs.
- Activate Inner Focus paired with Prayer of Healing or max-rank Greater Heal (Rank 7) during the opening damage phase for a free high-crit cast.
- Deploy Shadowfiend when you are meaningfully missing mana and can give it a full 15-second attack window on a safe target.
Cooldowns
Summons a shadowfiend for 15s on a 5-minute cooldown that restores mana on hit; deploy once sufficient mana has been spent and on a safe target that will survive the full 15-second window.
Instant self-heal on a 10-minute cooldown (Dwarf/Human); your primary personal survival emergency button.
Stat caps
No hard cap
Strong throughput and efficiency stat: directly scales Circle of Healing, Prayer of Mending, Greater Heal, and Renew.
No universal cap; 1.0s GCD floor
Haste reduces cast times and the spell GCD; only the GCD has a 1.0-second floor. It accelerates Circle of Healing and Greater Heal throughput, but faster casting also spends mana faster.
No hard cap
Meditation 3/3 keeps 30% of mana regeneration while casting; Spirit contributes up to 25% as healing through Spiritual Guidance and scales with Intellect. MP5 regenerates constantly inside and outside the five-second rule.
No hard cap
Critical heals with Flash Heal, Greater Heal, Binding Heal, Prayer of Healing, or CoH trigger Inspiration (+25% armor for 15s). Holy Concentration is separate: 4% Clearcasting chance after any Flash Heal, Binding Heal, or Greater Heal cast with 2/3 talents.

Gems and socket bonuses
Start with healing power once your meta is active and you have enough mana for the encounter. Filling spare sockets with Teardrop Crimson Spinel can beat matching colors for small bonuses; mana needs and your healing assignment still matter.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Insightful Earthstorm Diamond |
The mana-return default for sustained healing. A red-heavy setup still needs enough other colors to keep this active. Requires: At least 2 red, 2 yellow, and 2 blue gems. |
| Healing | Teardrop Crimson Spinel
Budget: Teardrop Living Ruby |
The throughput choice for spare sockets, including yellow or blue sockets whose bonuses do not repay the healing you lose. |
| Healing / mana | Luminous Pyrestone
Budget: Luminous Noble Topaz |
Adds intellect while counting as red and yellow. Useful for meta activation, mana support or a worthwhile yellow-socket bonus. |
| Healing / mana | Royal Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Royal Nightseye |
Adds steady MP5 while counting as red and blue. Use for meta activation or when sustained casting needs more mana. |
| Spirit option | Purified Shadow Pearl | A healing-and-Spirit hybrid for blue-counting slots. Compare its Spirit regeneration with Royal Shadowsong Amethyst’s higher printed healing and steady MP5. |
| Meta alternative | Bracing Earthstorm Diamond |
A throughput alternative when the mana-return meta is no longer useful to you. Recheck its different color requirement before switching. Requires: More red gems than blue gems. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- Do not buy every socket bonus at the cost of healing power. First reserve the hybrids that activate your meta, then compare the bonus and secondary stat with the healing you give up. Two Luminous Pyrestone and two Royal Shadowsong Amethyst cover Insightful Earthstorm Diamond’s color requirements.
-
A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +4 healing bonus, Teardrop Crimson Spinel adds 22 healing. Luminous Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 15 healing. You trade 7 healing for 5 intellect.Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.
When to swap gems
- Long raid-healing assignments: consider a few Spirit or intellect hybrids if you run dry. Spirit also contributes healing through Spiritual Guidance; that benefit is separate from the printed gem stats.
- Shorter kills with mana left over: move optional regeneration gems back toward healing power, while keeping your meta active.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Check effective targets hit and party cluster efficiency per Circle of Healing and Prayer of Healing cast.
- Review Greater Heal rank selection (downranked vs Rank 7), cancel-cast frequency, and tank Inspiration buff uptime.
- Verify Prayer of Mending bounce count, active target, and healing delivered; distinguish wasted overwrites from useful recasts of stranded charges.
- Track Holy Concentration Clearcasting procs and confirm consumption on Flash Heal, Binding Heal, or Greater Heal rather than Prayer of Healing.
- Measure mana expenditure curve, five-second rule efficiency, and potion/rune usage timing.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- Target the player positioned in the center of an injured party cluster when casting Circle of Healing to ensure all party members are within the 18-yard radius (with Holy Reach).
- Keep a stopcasting macro (/stopcasting). If a target becomes safe, cancel Greater Heal before it lands so no mana is spent and outside-5SR regeneration is preserved.
- Track Prayer of Mending on its current holder. Preserve useful bouncing charges, but move it back to an active damage-taker when it is stranded; cast 10-15s before pull to prime the first bounce.
- When Holy Concentration Clearcasting procs (4% after Flash Heal, Binding Heal, or Greater Heal with 2/3 talents), cast a free Greater Heal, Flash Heal, or Binding Heal that the assignment needs; Prayer of Healing is not an eligible consumer.
- Use Super Mana Potion early once down sufficient mana so its 2-minute cooldown begins cycling for subsequent uses during the encounter.
Common mistakes
- Spamming Circle of Healing on a party with only one injured member while another party is collapsing.
- Excessive haste gearing leading to rapid OOM without sufficient Spirit and MP5 to support the cast rate.
- Clipping Renew ticks with premature refreshes, wasting mana and lost healing ticks.
- Overwriting useful Prayer of Mending charges, or leaving it stranded on someone who will not take damage.
- Attempting to consume Holy Concentration Clearcasting with Prayer of Healing.
- Casting max-rank Greater Heal exclusively instead of mixing in downranked Greater Heals or canceling pre-casts.
