15s duration on a 2-minute cooldown; reduces all damage taken by 30% and gives successful melee attacks a chance to restore mana equal to 30% of attack power. Activate proactively on cooldown during sustained melee combat whenever mana can accept returns rather than holding until OOM or waiting for a fixed threshold.
Enhancement Shaman PvE DPS Guide — TBC Classic
Enhancement Shamans provide premier physical raid utility through Windfury Totem, Grace of Air, Strength of Earth, and Unleashed Rage (+10% AP) while delivering burst dual-wield melee DPS. This TBC Anniversary guide covers the 3/44/14 build, totem twisting, weapon synchronization, stat caps, and log review.
Is Enhancement Shaman worth a raid spot?
Assign an Enhancement Shaman to each melee or physical group that benefits from Windfury Totem / Grace of Air Totem twisting, Strength of Earth Totem, and Unleashed Rage (+10% melee AP for nearby party members within 20 yards for 10 seconds when that Shaman lands a melee critical strike). If a group has no physical attackers who benefit from Windfury, leave Grace of Air active full-time. Anniversary Bloodlust is raid-wide with a 10-minute Sated/Exhaustion lockout, so multiple shamans are brought for party-local totem coverage and physical buffing rather than chaining Bloodlust.
Talents

14 pointsRotation priority
- Cast Stormstrike as soon as it is ready on its 10-second cooldown (grants 2 charges of +20% Nature damage taken to the target); do not hold it for Windfury Weapon's 3-second internal cooldown.
- For physical parties, cast Windfury Totem and immediately switch to Grace of Air Totem every ~9–10 seconds before the 10-second lingering Windfury weapon buff expires. Rank 5 grants +445 base Attack Power and Rank 1 grants +122 base Attack Power; this build's 1/2 Improved Weapon Totems raises either bonus by 15%. Use Rank 5 normally and Rank 1 only as a mana-saving compromise.
- On long-lived targets, maintain Flame Shock without clipping its final tick and use Earth Shock between refreshes, when totem maintenance and mana allow. The shocks share a 6-second cooldown; Earth Shock also consumes a Stormstrike Nature-damage charge. Use Earth Shock alone when the target will die before Flame Shock pays off.
- Maintain Strength of Earth Totem (Earth slot) and Mana Spring Totem (Water slot). When mana and positioning permit, use Fire Nova Totem even on single targets, let it detonate, then restore Searing Totem; use Magma Totem between novas for clustered multi-target pulls.
- Activate Shamanistic Rage on its 2-minute cooldown during active melee uptime whenever mana can accept the returns. For 15 seconds it reduces all damage taken by 30% and gives successful melee attacks a chance to restore mana equal to 30% of attack power; do not wait for a fixed mana threshold or waste it during movement.
Opener
- Pre-plant Strength of Earth, Mana Spring, and assigned Fire totems at the engagement position, dropping Windfury Totem immediately before the pull and twisting to Grace of Air as melee connects.
- Ensure Windfury Weapon is active on both main-hand and off-hand weapons.
- Open with staggered equal-speed swings (main hand landing first, off hand ~0.1–0.4s later) and cast Stormstrike immediately on the first melee swing.
- Cast Earth Shock on the next global cooldown to consume a Stormstrike charge, then settle into the 10-second totem twisting cadence.
- Activate Bloodlust (raid-wide 10-minute lockout on Anniversary), racial abilities, on-use trinkets, and Haste Potion once tank threat is secure.
Cooldowns
Anniversary Bloodlust is raid-wide with a 10-minute Sated/Exhaustion lockout; coordinate with raid cooldowns and major burn phases.
20-minute cooldown, 2-minute duration; replaces your Fire totem. Deploy during stationary burn phases where sustained pet uptime outweighs standard Fire totems.
Stat caps
0
All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 3/3 Nature's Guidance, 3/3 Dual Wield Specialization.
0% from gear (0 rating) without external hit support; hit buffs do not lower this further.
The listed requirement caps this physical hit profile against the selected target level.
300
All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 3/3 Nature's Guidance, 3/3 Dual Wield Specialization.
19% from gear (300 rating) without external hit support.
16% from gear (253 rating) with only Improved Faerie Fire (+3%) on target.
18% from gear (284 rating) with only Draenei Heroic Presence (+1%) in your group.
15% from gear (237 rating) with Improved Faerie Fire (+3%) on target and Draenei Heroic Presence (+1%) in your group.
Dual-wield auto-attacks use the white-swing miss table. Hit continues to help white swings, but hard-capping them is usually weaker than other throughput stats.
103
6.5% boss dodge cap
The rear expertise cap removes boss dodge. Attacks from behind cannot be parried; weapon racials apply only with the listed weapon types.
164
All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 3/3 Nature's Guidance.
13% from gear (164 rating) without external hit support.
10% from gear (127 rating) with only Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group.
12% from gear (152 rating) with only Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.
9% from gear (114 rating) with Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group and Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.
The listed requirement reaches the attainable spell-hit cap; spells retain the unavoidable miss floor.
Equal-speed slow weapons (2.6–2.8)
Use equal-speed slow weapons when practical, with the main hand landing first and the off hand within 0.5 seconds. Flurry charge consumption has a 0.5-second internal cooldown, so close swings can share one charge; main-hand-first timing favors main-hand Windfury Weapon procs. Do not delay important abilities to chase a tiny swing offset.

Gems and socket bonuses
Keep your meta active and meet the hit target appropriate to your build, then compare damage gems across the whole set. Socket colors are opportunities for useful bonuses, not instructions to match every slot.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Relentless Earthstorm Diamond |
The physical-damage meta. Activate it before chasing small socket bonuses; purple, orange and green hybrids can cover its colors. Requires: At least 2 red, 2 yellow, and 2 blue gems. |
| Damage | Bold Crimson Spinel
Budget: Bold Living Ruby |
Strength is a strong starting point for spare sockets; compare against crit or hit where your full set benefits. |
| Hit correction | Glinting Pyrestone
Budget: Glinting Noble Topaz |
Adds hit while retaining agility. Useful when the full set needs more hit, including after a gear or talent swap. |
| More hit | Rigid Lionseye
Budget: Rigid Dawnstone |
A concentrated hit option when hybrids do not cover the gap. Stop valuing it at the relevant attack’s hit cap. |
| Meta colors | Sovereign Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Sovereign Nightseye |
A purple hybrid supplies red and blue for the meta while retaining a useful damage stat. |
| Meta / bonus | Inscribed Pyrestone
Budget: Inscribed Noble Topaz |
A crit hybrid can complete meta colors or a useful socket bonus; compare the total with your normal damage gem. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- Satisfy meta colors first, preferably in sockets with useful bonuses. A small bonus may not repay the damage stat you sacrifice to match it. For Relentless Earthstorm Diamond, two purple and two orange hybrids are one way to cover all three required colors.
-
A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +2 strength bonus, Bold Crimson Spinel adds 10 strength. Inscribed Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 7 strength. You trade 3 strength for 5 crit rating.Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.
When to swap gems
- Check the hit needs of special attacks, dual-wield white swings and spells separately after changing gear or talents. Physical hit gems do not supply spell-hit rating in TBC.
- For unavoidable damage or a mixed survival assignment: use a damage/stamina hybrid where the added health matters.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Review Stormstrike cast count and cooldown timing to ensure it was cast immediately on cooldown without delaying for Windfury ICD.
- Verify Windfury Totem and Grace of Air Totem twist cadence (~9–10s refresh) and buff uptime across all melee party members.
- Inspect Shamanistic Rage timing, total mana returned, and activation early in combat during melee uptime.
- Check Shock cast frequency and Strength of Earth / Mana Spring totem uptime.
- Measure MH-first swing stagger (0.1–0.4s lag window) and ensure main-hand and off-hand swing timers remained synchronized without clipping Flurry charges.
- Verify 0% boss parries in logs, confirming attacks were delivered strictly from behind the boss.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- Equip equal-speed slow weapons (ideally 2.6 or 2.7) with a dual swing timer: ensure the main hand lands first and the off hand follows 0.1–0.4 seconds later; re-sync after target swaps or disruptions, but do not chase micro-offsets during normal haste scaling.
- Cast Stormstrike as soon as it is ready on cooldown; do not hold it waiting for Windfury's 3-second internal cooldown.
- Use Rank 5 Windfury Totem for +445 base Attack Power; downrank to Rank 1 (+122 base AP) only when severe mana pressure requires it. This build's 1/2 Improved Weapon Totems increases either bonus by 15%.
- Activate Shamanistic Rage proactively on cooldown during sustained melee uptime whenever mana can accept returns (and for its 30% damage reduction) so multiple full-value cycles occur throughout the encounter.
- Pre-drop Windfury Totem before melee connects, then immediately twist to Grace of Air so physical party members gain both buffs immediately.
- Attack from behind the boss to avoid parries. On bosses with parry-haste enabled, this also avoids accelerating their next melee swing against the tank.
Common mistakes
- Holding Stormstrike off cooldown to wait for a Windfury internal cooldown proc.
- Using mismatched weapon speeds that desynchronize and consume Flurry charges prematurely, or failing to re-stagger equal-speed weapons after interruptions.
- Assuming Rank 1 Windfury Totem grants the same attack power as Rank 5 (Rank 1 gives +122 AP vs +445 AP on Rank 5).
- Treating Unleashed Rage as stacking or raid-wide, or assuming another party member can trigger it; the flat +10% party melee attack power buff within 20 yards is triggered for 10 seconds only when the Enhancement Shaman lands a melee critical strike.
- Letting Windfury Totem or Grace of Air buffs fall off the melee group, or twisting when no party members benefit from Windfury.
- Holding Shamanistic Rage until completely out of mana or popping it during movement/downtime.
- Applying sharpening stones or weightstones that overwrite Windfury Weapon imbues.
- Attacking from the front and losing attacks to parries, with additional tank risk on bosses where parry-haste is enabled.
