Is Shadow Priest worth a raid spot?

Usually place one Shadow Priest in a mana-hungry caster or healer party such as Arcane Mages, Destruction Warlocks, Restoration Shamans, or Holy Priests. Vampiric Touch returns mana to members of the priest's party, while Misery increases spell damage taken by the target, Shadow Weaving amplifies Shadow damage, and Vampiric Embrace supplies party healing. A second Shadow Priest is brought only when a second party can convert the mana return and the roster trade makes sense.

Rotation priority

  1. Maintain Vampiric Touch & Shadow Word: Pain: Maintain near 100% uptime on the primary target. Time the 1.5-second cast of Vampiric Touch so it lands on or just after the final tick of the previous aura; never clip VT early. Refresh SW:P immediately when it expires.
  2. Cast Mind Blast on cooldown as mana and threat allow; only an imminent DoT expiration takes precedence.
  3. Cast Shadow Word: Death on cooldown (12-second cooldown) only when recoil damage is survivable and healers can cover it. SW:D deals no recoil damage if it delivers the killing blow.
  4. Channel Mind Flay as filler: use a latency-tolerant tick bar to finish all 3 ticks, or clip cleanly immediately after tick 2 to cast a ready higher-priority spell (VT refresh, SW:P refresh, MB, SW:D). Never clip between ticks or after tick 1.
  5. Maintain Misery (+5% spell damage taken from all attackers) and 5 stacks of Shadow Weaving (+10% Shadow damage taken) on priority targets. This build has 4/5 Shadow Weaving, so each eligible application has an 80% proc chance; track stacks rather than assuming five casts guarantee five stacks.
  6. Use targetable racial damage spells such as Devouring Plague or Starshards conditionally on long-lived targets when damage per mana beats filler. Troll Shadowguard is instead a 10-minute, 3-charge reactive self-buff that damages enemies when they hit the priest; keep it active only when encounter damage can trigger it.

Opener

Vampiric Touch Shadow Word: Pain Mind Blast Shadow Word: Death Mind Flay Shadowfiend
  1. Pre-cast Vampiric Touch immediately before pull so its 1.5-second cast lands as the tank connects with the boss (VT has no travel time).
  2. Cast Shadow Word: Pain on the opening global cooldown.
  3. Cast Mind Blast on cooldown to establish initial party mana return and burst.
  4. Cast Shadow Word: Death immediately after Mind Blast if health and threat are safe.
  5. Channel Mind Flay to build Shadow Weaving to 5 stacks, weaving off-cooldown abilities cleanly after tick 2 or tick 3.
  6. Deploy Shadowfiend once you have spent sufficient mana so returns do not overcap, on a safe target that will live for the full 15-second duration.

Cooldowns

Shadowfiend

15s summon on a 5-minute cooldown that restores mana per melee hit landed; deploy once sufficient mana has been spent to absorb the return without overcapping, on a safe target.

Inner Focus

Reduces mana cost of your next spell by 100% and increases its crit chance by 25% on a 3-minute cooldown; pair with Mind Blast or Shadow Word: Death (VT, SW:P, and Mind Flay cannot crit).

Fade

Temporarily reduces threat by 1,500 for 10s on a 30-second cooldown. Use before hitting the tank threat ceiling to avoid throttling DPS; it does not permanently wipe threat.

Stat caps

Shadow Spells Hit Cap

76 Spell Hit Rating

All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 5/5 Shadow Focus.

6% from gear (76 rating) without external hit support.

3% from gear (38 rating) with only Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group.

5% from gear (64 rating) with only Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.

2% from gear (26 rating) with Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group and Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.

The listed requirement reaches the attainable spell-hit cap; spells retain the unavoidable miss floor.

Spell Power

No hard cap

Primary throughput stat. Scales Mind Flay, Mind Blast, and Shadow Word: Pain, and increases party mana return through Vampiric Touch (5% of Shadow damage dealt to a target with your Vampiric Touch becomes mana for nearby members of your party).

Spell Haste

No hard cap 15.77 rating = 1%

Haste reduces Mind Flay channel duration and GCD toward the 1.0-second floor. It increases Vampiric Touch mana return per second by accelerating damage output.

Spell Crit

Low priority

Mind Flay and Shadow Word: Pain cannot critically strike; only Mind Blast and Shadow Word: Death benefit from crit. Shadow's stat budget heavily prioritizes Spell Power and Haste over Crit.

Gems and socket bonuses

Spell power is the main gemming target once your actual spell-hit requirement is covered. Mystical Skyfire Diamond suits Shadow’s sustained casting, but its color rule makes careless yellow-gem swaps especially costly.

Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.

Type Gem Use
Meta Mystical Skyfire Diamond A spell-haste proc for sustained casting. Keep more blue-counting gems than yellow-counting gems across the set.

Requires: More blue gems than yellow gems.

Default Runed Crimson Spinel

Budget: Runed Living Ruby

Spell power improves your damage without asking you to match every socket color.
Meta colors Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst

Budget: Glowing Nightseye

Adds a blue count without adding a yellow count; useful for the meta requirement and extra stamina.
Spirit option Fluorescent Tanzanite A unique heroic-dungeon alternative that adds spell power, Spirit and a blue count. You can equip only one.
Hit correction Veiled Pyrestone

Budget: Veiled Noble Topaz

Closes a spell-hit gap, but also adds a yellow count. Add enough blue-counting gems to keep the meta active if needed.

When to match sockets

  • Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
  • Keep the meta active first, then favor spell power over weak socket bonuses. Orange and green gems add a yellow count even in a different-colored socket, while purple gems add blue without yellow. For example, one purple gem and no yellow-counting gems satisfies Mystical Skyfire Diamond.

When to swap gems

  • After a hit item or Shadow Focus change: recalculate the Shadow spell-hit target. Replace excess hit gems with spell power, checking meta colors at the same time.
  • For unavoidable raid damage: a spell-power/stamina purple gem can improve survival while supplying a useful blue count.
  • After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Reviewing your logs

DPS tier list

  • Review Vampiric Touch and Shadow Word: Pain uptime across all encounter targets.
  • Measure total mana returned to party members via Vampiric Touch.
  • Confirm Misery (+5% spell damage) and 5-stack Shadow Weaving (+10% Shadow damage) debuff uptime on primary targets.
  • Inspect Mind Flay tick completion vs early clipping loss (clean 2-tick clips vs full 3-tick channels).
  • Evaluate Shadowfiend timing, survivability, and mana restoration value.

Tips and Common Mistakes

Practical tips

  • Use a latency-tolerant tick bar: finish all three ticks unless a higher-priority spell is ready; if clipping is needed, cancel cleanly immediately after tick 2. Never clip after tick 1.
  • Shadow damage you deal to a target with your Vampiric Touch restores 5% of that damage as mana to nearby party members. Damage to a different target without your Vampiric Touch does not qualify.
  • Start the 1.5s Vampiric Touch cast so it finishes on or just after the final tick of the expiring VT; do not clip early and lose a tick.
  • On target swaps, apply VT/SW:P only when expected target lifespan pays back the cast, then deliberately rebuild Shadow Weaving to 5 stacks and apply Misery.
  • Pair Inner Focus with Mind Blast or Shadow Word: Death to take advantage of the 25% crit bonus; VT, SW:P, and Mind Flay cannot crit.
  • Use Shadow Word: Death only when recoil damage will not put you in danger of dying to encounter mechanics.

Common mistakes

  • Overcapping spell hit by ignoring the computed Shadow target for Shadow Focus, Totem of Wrath, and Inspiring Presence—or by incorrectly treating Misery as spell hit.
  • Clipping Mind Flay before tick 2 finishes or mid-channel rather than letting tick 3 finish or clipping cleanly after tick 2.
  • Clipping Vampiric Touch or Shadow Word: Pain with premature refreshes, wasting mana and losing DoT ticks.
  • Casting Shadow Word: Death into heavy incoming raid damage and killing yourself with recoil damage.
  • Holding Shadowfiend or Destruction/Mana Potions until too late in the fight, losing the opportunity for a second cooldown use.
