Summons 3 treants for 30s on a 3-minute cooldown; deploy in a safe position where treants can attack continuously without dying to cleaves or ground AoE.
Balance Druid PvE DPS Guide — TBC Classic
Balance Druids provide essential raid utility through Improved Faerie Fire (+3% physical hit), Moonkin Aura (+5% spell crit), Innervate, and Rebirth while delivering steady ranged Arcane and Nature DPS. This TBC Anniversary guide covers the 48/0/13 build, rotation priority, cooldown usage, stat caps, and log review.

Is Balance Druid worth a raid spot?
One Balance Druid is high-value for Improved Faerie Fire (+3% physical hit for all physical attackers against the target), Moonkin Aura (+5% spell crit to their 5-player party within 30 yards), Innervate, and Rebirth (in-combat resurrection). Moonkin Aura is a party-only aura, not raid-wide, and Improved Faerie Fire is a physical hit debuff on the target rather than caster spell hit. A second Balance Druid is rarely optimal over a stackable pure caster unless a second party specifically requires Moonkin Aura coverage.

13 pointsRotation priority
- Apply Improved Faerie Fire on the first global after combat starts when assigned, then maintain 100% uptime on the primary boss and all priority physical targets. It grants physical attackers +3% hit against the target, not caster spell hit.
- Maintain Moonfire when the target will live for its full DoT duration (12 seconds normally, 15 seconds with two-piece Thunderheart Regalia) and mana allows; do not clip before the final tick.
- If assigned or using to conserve mana, maintain Insect Swarm on the target for steady DoT damage and its 2% chance-to-hit debuff on bosses. If not assigned and mana is not an issue, you can cast during movement if both Moonfire and Improved Faerie Fire are already active on the target.
- Cast Force of Nature on cooldown (3-minute cooldown) whenever the 3 treants can attack freely for their full 30-second duration; do not hold solely for Bloodlust if doing so costs a full cast across the fight.
- Cast Starfire (3.5s raw base cast time, reduced to 3.0s by 5/5 Starlight Wrath) as your primary single-target damage filler.
- Optionally use Wrath (1.5s cast with Starlight Wrath) for short stationary windows between movement or to finish dying adds.
- Channel Hurricane for dense multi-target AoE packs when target count (3+ stacked targets) and mana allow.
Opener
- Ensure Moonkin Form, Mark of the Wild, and Thorns are active before engagement.
- Apply Improved Faerie Fire on the first global after combat starts when assigned, then cast Insect Swarm if assigned or as part of a mana-conserving rotation.
- Cast Moonfire to maintain DoT pressure, and deploy Force of Nature once the boss is firmly positioned and tank threat is established.
- Activate Destruction Potion (+120 spell power, +2% spell crit for 15s; use first potion after combat starts, standard shared 2-minute cooldown starts at use) and on-use spell power trinkets and racials after combat begins to align with raid Bloodlust.
- Settle into continuous Starfire casting as your primary filler.
Cooldowns
Increases Spirit-based mana regeneration by 400% for 20s on a 6-minute cooldown; follow raid assignments (often an Arcane Mage or healer) or self-cast during intensive Starfire casting.
Instant cast on a 1-minute cooldown, 12-second duration; reduces all damage taken by 20% and prevents spell pushback. Usable in Moonkin Form without shifting out; activate during heavy raid AoE or while channeling Hurricane.
20-minute cooldown, 2-second cast, 30-yard range, 68% base mana cost; resurrects a fallen ally in combat with 3,200 health and 3,200 mana. Requires 1 Flintweed Seed; follow assigned battle-res order and return to Moonkin Form immediately after casting.
Stat caps
114
All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 2/2 Balance of Power.
12% from gear (152 rating) without external hit support.
9% from gear (114 rating) with only Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group.
11% from gear (139 rating) with only Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.
8% from gear (101 rating) with Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group and Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.
The listed requirement reaches the attainable spell-hit cap; spells retain the unavoidable miss floor.
No hard cap
Primary throughput stat. Scales Starfire (Wrath of Cenarius adds 20% spell power coefficient) and Moonfire; Lunar Guidance adds spell damage equal to 25% of total Intellect.
1.0s GCD floor
Haste reduces Starfire cast time (3.5s raw base, 3.0s talented with 5/5 Starlight Wrath) and Wrath down toward the 1.0-second GCD floor; evaluate against mana sustainability.
No hard cap
Vengeance doubles bonus critical damage (200% crit damage instead of 150%); critical strikes trigger Nature's Grace (-0.5s cast time on next spell).
+5% spell crit (party only)
Increases party members' spell critical strike chance by 5% within 30 yards. This is a 5-player party-only aura, not raid-wide.

Gems and socket bonuses
Activate your meta, cover spell hit for the talents and raid support you actually have, then favor spell power. Use hybrids where the secondary stat and socket bonus together are worth the spell power you give up.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Chaotic Skyfire Diamond |
Improves damaging spell crits. Use blue-counting gems to activate it; it does not make damage-over-time ticks crit. Requires: At least 2 blue gems. |
| Default | Runed Crimson Spinel
Budget: Runed Living Ruby |
The usual spare-socket choice once spell hit and meta colors are covered. |
| Hit correction | Veiled Pyrestone
Budget: Veiled Noble Topaz |
Adds spell hit while retaining some spell power. Replace it when the complete set no longer needs that hit. |
| Crit option | Potent Pyrestone
Budget: Potent Noble Topaz |
Consider for crit-friendly casting or a worthwhile yellow-socket bonus. Compare with pure spell power in the full set. |
| Meta colors | Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Glowing Nightseye |
Supplies blue for meta activation while retaining spell power and adding stamina. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- Match a socket when the total gain is useful, not simply because the colors line up. Hit gems lose their offensive value above the relevant spell-hit cap. Put the blue-counting gems needed for Chaotic Skyfire Diamond into sockets with useful bonuses where possible.
-
A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +2 spell power bonus, Runed Crimson Spinel adds 12 spell power. Veiled Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 8 spell power. You trade 4 spell power for 5 spell-hit rating.Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.
When to swap gems
- After changing hit gear, talents or raid support: recalculate the hit target, then trade hit gems and spell-power gems as needed. Only count Inspiring Presence and Totem of Wrath when their spell-hit bonuses are actually available in your party; Improved Faerie Fire does not provide caster spell hit.
- For unavoidable damage: keep enough stamina to survive, using blue-counting spell-power/stamina gems where they also satisfy your meta.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Verify Improved Faerie Fire uptime on all priority boss/add targets (aim for 98%+ uptime) and check that it was applied on the first global after combat starts.
- Check Starfire cast count and casting uptime across the encounter, minimizing empty globals.
- Review DoT clipping and verify Moonfire was refreshed only after its final tick completed.
- Inspect Force of Nature casts, treant attack uptime, and Nature's Grace proc conversion into Starfire casts.
- Track Innervate timing and total mana returned to the assigned recipient.
- Confirm prompt Rebirth execution and immediate return to Moonkin Form.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- Apply Improved Faerie Fire promptly when assigned: it provides the 3% physical hit debuff. Insect Swarm instead reduces the target's chance to hit by 2%.
- Position inside your caster group so Moonkin Aura (+5% spell crit) covers all party members within 30 yards.
- Nature's Grace reduces the next cast-time spell by 0.5 seconds. Instant Moonfire or Insect Swarm refreshes do not consume it, so maintain needed DoTs and then resume Starfire.
- Use Flask of Blinding Light (+80 Arcane spell damage); never use Flask of Pure Death, which only buffs Shadow, Fire, and Frost damage.
- Barkskin is instant, usable directly in Moonkin Form, and prevents spell pushback; activate it during heavy raid AoE or while channeling Hurricane.
- Carry Flintweed Seeds for Rebirth and use a macro to resurrect and shift back into Moonkin Form immediately.
Common mistakes
- Failing to apply Improved Faerie Fire on the first global after combat starts when assigned, delaying the 3% physical hit debuff for physical attackers.
- Using Flask of Pure Death instead of Flask of Blinding Light (Pure Death does not buff Arcane or Nature damage).
- Clipping Moonfire or Insect Swarm before the final tick finishes.
- Delaying a needed instant DoT refresh for fear of consuming Nature's Grace; instant DoTs do not use the proc.
- Assuming Moonkin Aura (+5% spell crit) is raid-wide rather than a 5-player party effect.
- Overcapping spell hit by ignoring the computed target for the active Balance of Power, Totem of Wrath, and Inspiring Presence state.
- Forgetting Flintweed Seeds in your bags, preventing in-combat Rebirth.
- Shifting out of Moonkin Form for Barkskin (Barkskin in TBC is directly castable in Moonkin Form).
