Frost Mage BiS

Is Frost Mage worth a raid spot?

The 40/0/21 Arcane Power Frost hybrid uses Frostbolt with damage and mana talents from the Arcane tree. It does not take the deep-Frost control talents, Winter's Chill, or Water Elemental; choose it with that tradeoff in mind.

Rotation priority

  1. Cast Frostbolt continuously as your primary single-target filler.
  2. Activate Arcane Power (+30% damage and +30% mana cost) and Icy Veins (+20% casting speed) in stationary burn windows. Note that Arcane Power amplifies damage and mana cost, not haste.
  3. Map Cold Snap (resets recently cast Frost spells) to the encounter timeline: use after the first Icy Veins to gain an additional Icy Veins window on longer fights, or hold for defensive Ice Block resets.
  4. When Clearcasting procs from Arcane Concentration, cast Frostbolt for a free-mana cast with bonus crit from Arcane Potency.
  5. Use Fire Blast or Ice Lance during forced movement when hard-casting Frostbolt is impossible.
  6. Blizzard deals baseline damage only (the slowing chill effect requires the Improved Blizzard talent); in 40/0/21 AP-Frost without Improved Blizzard, use Blizzard for raw AoE damage, reserving Frost Nova or Cone of Cold for snares.

Opener

Mage Armor Frostbolt Arcane Power Icy Veins Destruction Potion Presence of Mind
  1. Apply Mage Armor (or Molten Armor) and Arcane Brilliance before pull.
  2. Pre-cast Frostbolt at max range to land right after the tank establishes initial threat.
  3. Activate Arcane Power, Icy Veins, throughput trinkets, and Destruction Potion once threat is secure.
  4. Cast Frostbolt continuously throughout the burst window.
  5. Use Cold Snap after Icy Veins has been activated to prepare another Icy Veins window; wait for the first buff to expire before reactivating Icy Veins. Hold the reset for Ice Block only when the encounter needs it.

Cooldowns

Arcane Power

Spells deal 30% more damage and cost 30% more mana for 15s on a 3-minute cooldown; primary damage amplifier (does not grant haste).

Icy Veins

+20% spell casting speed and 100% pushback resistance for 20s on a 3-minute cooldown; pair with Arcane Power for high burst.

Cold Snap

Instantly finishes the cooldowns of recently cast Frost spells (Icy Veins, Ice Block, Frost Nova) on an 8-minute cooldown. Use to gain an extra Icy Veins window or as an emergency defensive reset for Ice Block; does not affect Arcane Power.

Presence of Mind

Makes your next spell instant on a 3-minute cooldown; use for an instant Frostbolt during burst or movement.

Ice Block

5-minute cooldown (resettable with Cold Snap). Provides complete immunity to drop lethal debuffs or survive fatal mechanics; cancel immediately with a macro once danger passes.

Stat caps

Binary Frost Spells Hit Cap

89 Spell Hit Rating

All breakpoints vs Boss (73) with 3/3 Elemental Precision.

10% from gear (127 rating) without external hit support.

7% from gear (89 rating) with only Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group.

9% from gear (114 rating) with only Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.

6% from gear (76 rating) with Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group and Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.

The listed requirement reaches the attainable spell-hit cap; spells retain the unavoidable miss floor.

Spell Power & Crit

No hard cap

Spell power scales Frostbolt (0.814 coefficient before damage multipliers). Ice Shards and Spell Power improve Frost spell crit damage. This 40/0/21 build does not apply Winter's Chill; that debuff requires a different Frost build.

Spell Haste

No universal cap; 1.0s GCD floor 15.77 rating = 1%

Haste reduces Frostbolt cast time (2.5s talented with 5/5 Improved Frostbolt) toward the 1.0-second GCD floor.

Consumes

Type Consumable Use
Flask Flask of Pure Death Use instead of Battle + Guardian elixirs
Potion Destruction Potion Burn phases; shares 2-minute potion cooldown
Potion Super Mana Potion Mana recovery; shares 2-minute potion cooldown
Food Blackened Basilisk Spell power option (+23 spell damage, +20 spirit)
Weapon buff Brilliant Wizard Oil
Mana restore Dark Rune
Mana restore Mana Emerald

Gems and socket bonuses

Activate your meta, cover spell hit for the talents and raid support you actually have, then favor spell power. Use hybrids where the secondary stat and socket bonus together are worth the spell power you give up.

Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.

Type Gem Use
Meta Chaotic Skyfire Diamond Improves damaging spell crits. Use blue-counting gems to activate it; it does not make damage-over-time ticks crit.

Requires: At least 2 blue gems.

Default Runed Crimson Spinel

Budget: Runed Living Ruby

The usual spare-socket choice once spell hit and meta colors are covered.
Hit correction Veiled Pyrestone

Budget: Veiled Noble Topaz

Adds spell hit while retaining some spell power. Replace it when the complete set no longer needs that hit.
Crit option Potent Pyrestone

Budget: Potent Noble Topaz

Consider for crit-friendly casting or a worthwhile yellow-socket bonus. Compare with pure spell power in the full set.
Meta colors Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst

Budget: Glowing Nightseye

Supplies blue for meta activation while retaining spell power and adding stamina.

When to match sockets

  • Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
  • Match a socket when the total gain is useful, not simply because the colors line up. Hit gems lose their offensive value above the relevant spell-hit cap. Put the blue-counting gems needed for Chaotic Skyfire Diamond into sockets with useful bonuses where possible.
  • A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +2 spell power bonus, Runed Crimson Spinel adds 12 spell power. Veiled Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 8 spell power. You trade 4 spell power for 5 spell-hit rating.

Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.

When to swap gems

  • After changing hit gear, talents or raid support: recalculate the hit target, then trade hit gems and spell-power gems as needed. Only count Inspiring Presence and Totem of Wrath when their spell-hit bonuses are actually available in your party; Improved Faerie Fire does not provide caster spell hit.
  • For unavoidable damage: keep enough stamina to survive, using blue-counting spell-power/stamina gems where they also satisfy your meta.
  • After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Reviewing your logs

DPS tier list

  • Review Frostbolt cast counts and casting uptime across the encounter.
  • Verify Arcane Power, Icy Veins, and Cold Snap alignment and usage count without dipping below the 1.0s GCD floor.
  • Inspect spell misses against active Elemental Precision and raid hit buffs.
  • Track mana consumption timeline and proactive use of Mana Emerald and Super Mana Potion.
  • Evaluate Ice Lance and Fire Blast usage during movement to confirm globals were not wasted.

Tips and Common Mistakes

Practical tips

  • Treat Arcane Power as a 30% damage and 30% mana cost multiplier, not a haste buff; ensure sufficient mana before popping AP.
  • Plan Cold Snap to gain an additional Icy Veins use. It can reset the cooldown while the first Icy Veins is active; avoid overwriting that active buff when using the reset cooldown.
  • Use Mana Emerald, Super Mana Potion, and Dark Runes early in the encounter to sustain mana during Arcane Power windows and allow item cooldowns to cycle.
  • Use the computed Frostbolt hit card above when changing talents or raid support; its binary-spell treatment is already included, so rating beyond the displayed target can move to spell power, haste, or crit.
  • Keep a cancelaura macro for Ice Block to drop lethal debuffs without idling inside the block.

Common mistakes

  • Holding Cold Snap for the entire fight without using it to reset Icy Veins or save a life.
  • Overcapping spell hit by ignoring the computed Frostbolt target for the active raid support.
  • Assuming 40/0/21 AP-Frost has Improved Blizzard slow or Water Elemental; those require dedicated Deep Frost talent builds.
  • Running out of mana during Arcane Power by failing to use Mana Emeralds and mana potions proactively.
  • Casting Ice Lance on unfrozen targets while stationary instead of hard-casting Frostbolt.
