Retribution Paladin BiS

Is Retribution Paladin worth a raid spot?

Place the Retribution Paladin in the party that benefits most from Sanctity Aura (10% Holy damage plus 2% all damage with Improved Sanctity Aura, party-only within 30 yards). Improved Seal of the Crusader provides a 3% target crit debuff for the entire raid, alongside greater blessings and steady hybrid physical and Holy damage. A second Retribution Paladin is an assignment choice for blessing, aura, or debuff coverage, not a default raid requirement.

Rotation priority

  1. Keep Seal of Command active between swings; queue Seal of Blood in the final ~400 ms before swing impact so both Seal of Command and Seal of Blood proc on the melee hit. The weapon swing timer, not the GCD alone, governs the twist cadence.
  2. Crusader Strike is an instant physical strike dealing 110% weapon damage on a 6-second cooldown that refreshes all Judgements on the target. Cast on cooldown, but delay slightly if its 1.5-second GCD would clip or consume the ~400 ms twist window before the next melee swing.
  3. Maintain your assigned Judgement of the Crusader (3% crit debuff), Judgement of Wisdom, or Judgement of Light. Judgement is off the global cooldown but consumes your seal: judge Blood after a completed twist, then reapply Seal of Command. Do not remove the seal just before the swing.
  4. Below 20% target health, Hammer of Wrath is an option while out of melee range or to finish a dying target. Its cast resets your melee swing timer, so do not use it on cooldown in a normal melee seal-twisting rotation.
  5. Cast Consecration (Rank 1 for sustain, max rank during burst) when available mana and encounter duration support the mana cost.
  6. Cast Exorcism and Holy Wrath against Demon and Undead targets only when GCD and mana do not disrupt the twisting cycle.

Opener

Seal of the Crusader Judgement of the Crusader Seal of Command Seal of Blood Crusader Strike Avenging Wrath Haste Potion
  1. Ensure assigned greater blessings and Sanctity Aura are active; pre-cast the setup seal (Seal of the Crusader if assigned Judgement of the Crusader; otherwise Wisdom or Light).
  2. Judge the setup seal while approaching, then apply Seal of Command before establishing your melee swing cycle.
  3. Track the next melee swing and cast Seal of Blood in its final ~400 ms to establish the twist cadence.
  4. Cast Crusader Strike after the first swing, delaying slightly if its GCD would clip the next twist window.
  5. Activate Avenging Wrath (+30% all damage for 20s), Haste Potion, and racial abilities once tank threat is secure.

Cooldowns

Avenging Wrath

Your primary 3-minute burst cooldown (+30% all damage for 20s); applies Forbearance, so never use immediately before a planned Divine Shield or Blessing of Protection. Stack with Bloodlust, trinkets, and Haste Potion once tank threat is secure.

Blessing of Protection

Temporary physical immunity that halts physical attacks and suppresses aggro for its duration; does not wipe permanent threat.

Divine Shield

Provides 12 seconds of complete immunity on a 5-minute cooldown; doubles weapon swing time while active and causes Forbearance. Use outside twist windows to survive lethal mechanics.

Lay on Hands

Emergency heal equal to your maximum health that drains all remaining mana; use when the save outweighs lost DPS, then recover mana with a rune or potion.

Gems and socket bonuses

Keep your meta active and meet the hit target appropriate to your build, then compare damage gems across the whole set. Socket colors are opportunities for useful bonuses, not instructions to match every slot.

Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.

Type Gem Use
Meta Relentless Earthstorm Diamond Use in a meta-socket helmet and keep at least two red, two yellow, and two blue gems counted across equipped gear. Hybrid gems count toward both of their colors.

Requires: At least 2 red, 2 yellow, and 2 blue gems.

Damage Bold Crimson Spinel

Budget: Bold Living Ruby

Strength is a strong starting point for spare sockets; compare against crit or hit where your full set benefits.
Hit correction Glinting Pyrestone

Budget: Glinting Noble Topaz

Adds hit while retaining agility. Useful when the full set needs more hit, including after a gear or talent swap.
More hit Rigid Lionseye

Budget: Rigid Dawnstone

A concentrated hit option when hybrids do not cover the gap. Stop valuing it at the relevant attack’s hit cap.
Meta colors Sovereign Shadowsong Amethyst

Budget: Sovereign Nightseye

A purple hybrid supplies red and blue for the meta while retaining a useful damage stat.
Meta / bonus Inscribed Pyrestone

Budget: Inscribed Noble Topaz

A crit hybrid can complete meta colors or a useful socket bonus; compare the total with your normal damage gem.

When to match sockets

  • Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
  • Satisfy meta colors first, preferably in sockets with useful bonuses. A small bonus may not repay the damage stat you sacrifice to match it. For Relentless Earthstorm Diamond, two purple and two orange hybrids are one way to cover all three required colors.
  • A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +2 strength bonus, Bold Crimson Spinel adds 10 strength. Inscribed Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 7 strength. You trade 3 strength for 5 crit rating.

Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.

When to swap gems

  • After a weapon, hit item, talent or raid-support change: check your new hit total before buying replacement gems. Keep the meta colors intact while making the correction.
  • For unavoidable damage or a mixed survival assignment: use a damage/stamina hybrid where the added health matters.
  • After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Reviewing your logs

DPS tier list

  • Verify Improved Seal of the Crusader and assigned Judgement uptime on the target (target 95%+).
  • Review seal-twisting consistency: confirm Seal of Command and Seal of Blood procs aligned on eligible white swings.
  • Review Crusader Strike cast efficiency against cooldown availability, ensuring casts did not clip twist windows.
  • Inspect Avenging Wrath and Haste Potion alignment with Bloodlust and boss vulnerability phases.
  • Check that Hammer of Wrath did not reset valuable melee swings during normal twisting; review Seal of Blood self-damage and healer strain.

Tips and Common Mistakes

Practical tips

  • Seal twisting is a one-way Seal of Command -> Seal of Blood swap: keep Command active between swings, then queue Seal of Blood in the final ~400 ms before swing impact.
  • At level 70, both factions can learn Seal of Blood.
  • Stand behind the boss to avoid parried attacks. On enemies with parry haste, attacking from the front can also speed up the boss's next melee attack against the tank.
  • Avenging Wrath applies Forbearance, so do not spend it immediately before a planned Divine Shield, Divine Protection, or Blessing of Protection. Divine Shield doubles weapon swing time while active.
  • Manage mana dynamically: downrank Consecration to Rank 1 during sustain phases and save max-rank for Bloodlust burst.
  • Use Blessing of Freedom and Cleanse proactively to remove movement slows and debuffs on yourself or party members.
  • Use your first potion after combat starts (standard shared 2-minute cooldown starts at use); plan Haste Potion or Mana Potion windows accordingly.
  • Rank 1 Seal of Command is enough for the weapon-damage proc used in twisting; higher ranks mainly improve its Judgement damage. Return to Command after the Blood swing and any planned Judgement.

Common mistakes

  • Failing to seal-twist and leaving Seal of Blood active full-time, sacrificing massive double-proc burst.
  • Missing seal twist windows during Bloodlust or haste procs due to unadjusted swing-timer queue timing.
  • Letting Judgement of the Crusader drop, costing the entire raid 3% critical strike chance on the boss.
  • Delaying Crusader Strike off cooldown when the twist window is not threatened, losing overall strike volume.
  • Over-spending mana on max-rank Consecration early in long fights and running OOM before execute.
  • Treating Blessing of Protection as a permanent threat wipe rather than temporary physical immunity.
