Protection Paladin BiS

Is Protection Paladin worth a raid spot?

Protection Paladins provide premier multi-target aggro control via Consecration and Holy Shield, alongside exceptional physical mitigation and raid blessings. Bring Protection when the raid needs a durable boss tank or efficient multi-target pickup; choose boss, wave, utility, and resistance assignments according to encounter damage and threat requirements.

Rotation priority

  1. Keep Holy Shield ready for incoming boss swings and refresh on its 10-second cooldown. With Improved Holy Shield it lasts 10 seconds and has 8 charges; a pack can consume them before you can recast. Keep enemies in front and use the computed coverage target with Holy Shield active.
  2. Drop Consecration (max rank for initial pull and burst threat, downranked for mana sustain) where enemies will actually group and stand.
  3. Apply the assigned Judgement: Crusader supplies Holy vulnerability and, with this build, 3% raid crit; Wisdom supplies mana. A Retribution Paladin's Crusader Strike can maintain it. Use Judgement of Righteousness for additional threat when the assignment permits, then reseal immediately.
  4. Maintain Righteous Fury (30-minute duration; +90% Holy threat and 6% damage reduction with 3/3 Improved Righteous Fury). Seal of Righteousness is a reliable combat seal for snap threat and short-lived targets; Seal of Vengeance is an option for sustained single-target threat once its stacks build.
  5. Use Avenger's Shield for the pull or incoming adds. Avoid hard-casting while taking melee hits: you cannot dodge, parry, or block during the cast, and Holy Shield must remain the priority.
  6. Cast Exorcism and Holy Wrath against Demon and Undead targets when mana permits without risking Holy Shield uptime.

Opener

Righteous Fury Holy Shield Avenger's Shield Consecration Judgement of Righteousness Seal of Righteousness
  1. Check that Righteous Fury is active (lasts 30 minutes; recheck after death, rez, or dispel) and pre-cast the assigned combat seal.
  2. Pull with Avenger's Shield, body pull, or line-of-sight positioning depending on mob layout and encounter mechanics.
  3. Cast Holy Shield immediately before the first mob swings land so its full charge pool is available for the initial swing batch.
  4. Drop Consecration at the final grouping point (not on pull) to anchor group aggro.
  5. Judge the assigned seal, reseal immediately, and activate Avenging Wrath (+30% all damage for 20s) for snap threat when no immediate defensive bubble is planned.

Cooldowns

Holy Shield

Refresh on its 10-second cooldown. Improved Holy Shield provides 8 charges, but those can run out early against packs. The computed coverage card assumes the buff still has charges.

Avenging Wrath

Increases all damage and threat by 30% for 20s on a 3-minute cooldown; causes Forbearance, so never use immediately before a planned Divine Shield or Divine Protection.

Righteous Defense

3-target taunt on a 15-second cooldown; cast on the friendly player who has aggro, or through a target-of-target / mouseover macro.

Divine Protection

Max rank provides 8s immunity on a 5-minute cooldown (causes Forbearance). Use for emergency mitigation when threat is secure or immediately drop with /cancelaura.

Divine Shield

12 seconds of complete immunity on a 4-minute cooldown with 2/2 Sacred Duty. While active, enemies attack the next target on threat. A /cancelaura macro ends the immunity but does not taunt; cancel only with a rehearsed Righteous Defense ready.

Stat caps

Critical Strike Immunity

284 490 Defense Skill (284 Rating from gear)

5.6% crit reduction needed

Defense skill also adds miss, dodge, parry, and block. Resilience can cover crit reduction but does not add those avoidance benefits.

Uncrushable Breakpoint

102.4% Combined Miss + Dodge + Parry + Block

72.4% passive coverage with Holy Shield

Holy Shield supplies 30% block while active. Verify the combat table with the buff active and account for charge or uptime gaps.

Spells & Judgements Hit Cap

164 Spell Hit Rating

13% needed from gear

The listed requirement reaches the attainable spell-hit cap; spells retain the unavoidable miss floor.

Threat Hit & Expertise Targets

95 Hit / 83 Exp Rating under the selected talent, buff, and racial state

6% needed from gear · 6.5% dodge removed · 7.5% parry remains from front

Threat hit and expertise targets are optional after the encounter survival requirements are met. Expertise reduces boss dodge and parry together. The listed dodge-cap target removes 6.5% from both; 7.5% parry remains from the front. Fully removing parry would require 56 expertise before talents and racials.

Gems and socket bonuses

Choose gems for the job: maintain boss crit immunity, then balance health, mitigation and threat. Stamina is a reliable survival option, but filling every socket with it can leave a real defensive or threat gap elsewhere.

Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.

Type Gem Use
Meta Powerful Earthstorm Diamond A stamina-focused survival meta. Blue and blue-counting hybrid gems can satisfy its requirement.

Requires: At least 3 blue gems.

Survival Solid Empyrean Sapphire

Budget: Solid Star of Elune

Adds health against both physical and magical damage. Use when surviving burst is the priority.
Crit immunity Enduring Seaspray Emerald Defense and stamina in one gem. Helps close a boss crit-immunity gap and can preserve a useful yellow-socket bonus.
Physical survival Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst

Budget: Shifting Nightseye

Agility and stamina add physical avoidance and health; agility also supports armor and crit.
Spell threat Runed Crimson Spinel

Budget: Runed Living Ruby

A spell-power option when threat is the limiting factor and your defensive requirements are already satisfied.
Physical hit Glinting Pyrestone

Budget: Glinting Noble Topaz

Use for a meaningful physical-hit gap once survival needs are met; compare against the stamina or defense being replaced.

When to match sockets

  • Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
  • Take socket bonuses when the gem and the bonus serve the set’s job. A defense/stamina hybrid can be worth more than pure stamina if it keeps you crit-immune; after that need is covered, a tiny bonus is not automatically worth giving up health.
  • A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +3 stamina bonus, Solid Empyrean Sapphire adds 15 stamina. Enduring Seaspray Emerald plus the bonus adds 10 stamina. You trade 5 stamina for 5 defense rating.

Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.

When to swap gems

  • After changing gear: check both crit immunity and combat-table coverage with Holy Shield active. Spell-power gems do not fill a defense or avoidance shortfall.
  • Once survival is comfortable: move a few gems toward threat or avoidance for that encounter. Keep a survival setup for heavier burst damage.
  • After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Reviewing your logs

DPS tier list

  • Verify Righteous Fury was active 100% of combat time (recheck after any death, rez, or dispel).
  • Check Holy Shield uptime and charge depletion, facing, and gear coverage when reviewing crushing blows; the buff alone does not guarantee immunity.
  • Review Consecration uptime, tick coverage, and downranking efficiency relative to available mana.
  • Inspect Judgement and active combat seal recast timing to ensure continuous Holy damage generation.
  • Examine Righteous Defense taunt timing and reaction speed on loose adds or threat drops.

Tips and Common Mistakes

Practical tips

  • Always cast Holy Shield before engaging; dropping Consecration first wastes a global while the boss lands unblocked melee swings.
  • Position mobs carefully so they remain strictly in your front 180-degree arc; attacks from behind bypass dodge, parry, and block entirely.
  • Downrank Consecration (Rank 1 or Rank 4) during sustain phases to conserve mana, saving max rank for pulls and snap aggro.
  • Keep Righteous Fury active at all times (lasts 30 minutes); 3/3 Improved Righteous Fury scales your Holy threat to +90% and provides 6% damage reduction.
  • When cancelling Divine Shield (4-minute cooldown with 2/2 Sacred Duty and no attack-speed penalty) or Divine Protection (8s duration, 5-minute cooldown) with a /cancelaura macro, have Righteous Defense ready immediately to secure threat.
  • Use your first potion after combat starts (standard shared 2-minute cooldown starts at use); plan Ironshield or Mana Potion windows accordingly.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling without Righteous Fury active, immediately losing aggro to DPS burst.
  • Assuming Holy Shield guarantees uninterrupted coverage on packs; its 8 charges can be consumed before the 10-second cooldown ends.
  • Turning your back to enemies, which disables dodge, parry, and block entirely.
  • Over-spending mana on max-rank Consecration early in a long encounter and running out of mana.
  • Using Divine Shield to clear debuffs without a coordinated taunt plan, causing the boss to attack melee DPS.
  • Equipping gear that drops total avoidance and block below the computed target with Holy Shield active.
