Is Destruction Warlock worth a raid spot?
Top-tier ranged DPS; heavily stacked in 25-man raids for immense single-target burst, shared Improved Shadow Bolt debuff scaling (+20% Shadow damage while active, consumed by 4 non-periodic Shadow hits), and heavy Seed of Corruption AoE. Fire Destruction is an alternative whose output depends on gear and support from Fire Mage Improved Scorch and Curse of the Elements.

- Maintain the assigned highest-rank curse (Curse of the Elements for +10% Arcane, Fire, Frost, and Shadow damage or Curse of Recklessness for -800 armor); cast Curse of Doom when utility curses are covered and the target will live for its full 60-second detonation.
- Shadow Destruction: Sacrifice a Succubus (+15% Shadow damage) and cast Shadow Bolt as your primary filler. Maintain Immolate only when its full-duration damage beats the Shadow Bolt casting time and mana it replaces for your gear and raid buffs.
- Fire Destruction: Sacrifice an Imp (+15% Fire damage); maintain Immolate with 100% uptime to enable Incinerate bonus damage, then cast Incinerate (2.5s base cast, ~2.25s with 5/5 Emberstorm; Bane does not reduce Incinerate) as filler; cast Conflagrate only for movement or execute.
- Multi-target AoE: Cast Seed of Corruption across multiple high-health targets so detonations chain rapidly (costs mana only, no Soul Shards).
- Use Life Tap during movement, target transitions, or low-intensity windows; never enter Bloodlust or high-damage burst windows starved of mana.
Opener
- Before the pull: Pre-cast Demonic Sacrifice on the appropriate demon (Succubus for Shadow, Imp for Fire) for the +15% school damage buff, and ensure Fel Armor is active.
- Pre-cast Shadow Bolt at maximum range timed to land after the tank establishes initial threat lead.
- Apply the assigned highest-rank curse on the first global cooldown.
- If initial threat is unsafe, delay damaging casts until the tank has a lead. This build has no Improved Corruption, so Corruption takes 2 seconds to cast and is not an instant movement filler.
- Apply Immolate once after the curse (for Fire Destruction or when simmed as worth it for Shadow Destruction), then begin spamming filler (Incinerate or Shadow Bolt).
- Activate on-use spell trinkets, Destruction Potion, and racial abilities during the planned burn window after tank threat is stable (use the first potion after combat starts; standard shared 2-minute cooldown starts at use).
Cooldowns
30-minute buff granting +15% Shadow damage (Succubus) or +15% Fire damage (Imp). Check whether Demonic Sacrifice remains active after death or resurrection; if lost, summon and re-sacrifice before resuming rotation.
Instant Shadow damage on a 15-second cooldown costing 1 Soul Shard. Use during movement or when the target will die before a hard cast lands; it has no bonus damage or requirement below 20% health.
Stat caps
164
All breakpoints vs Boss (73).
16% from gear (202 rating) without external hit support.
13% from gear (164 rating) with only Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group.
15% from gear (190 rating) with only Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.
12% from gear (152 rating) with Totem of Wrath (+3%) in your group and Draenei Inspiring Presence (+1%) in your group.
The listed requirement reaches the attainable spell-hit cap; spells retain the unavoidable miss floor.
No hard cap
Spell power scales Shadow Bolt and Incinerate. Their base coefficients are approximately 0.857 and 0.714; 5/5 Shadow and Flame adds 0.20 to each before damage multipliers.
No hard cap
Ruin doubles bonus critical damage (200% crit damage instead of 150%); critical strikes trigger Improved Shadow Bolt (+20% Shadow spell damage to the target for 4 charges).
No hard cap
Reduces Shadow Bolt cast time (2.5s talented) and Incinerate (2.25s talented) toward the 1.0-second GCD floor. Compare haste with spell power and crit using your complete gear set and raid buffs.

Gems and socket bonuses
Activate your meta, cover spell hit for the talents and raid support you actually have, then favor spell power. Use hybrids where the secondary stat and socket bonus together are worth the spell power you give up.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Chaotic Skyfire Diamond |
Improves damaging spell crits. Use blue-counting gems to activate it; it does not make damage-over-time ticks crit. Requires: At least 2 blue gems. |
| Default | Runed Crimson Spinel
Budget: Runed Living Ruby |
The usual spare-socket choice once spell hit and meta colors are covered. |
| Hit correction | Veiled Pyrestone
Budget: Veiled Noble Topaz |
Adds spell hit while retaining some spell power. Replace it when the complete set no longer needs that hit. |
| Crit option | Potent Pyrestone
Budget: Potent Noble Topaz |
Consider for crit-friendly casting or a worthwhile yellow-socket bonus. Compare with pure spell power in the full set. |
| Meta colors | Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Glowing Nightseye |
Supplies blue for meta activation while retaining spell power and adding stamina. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- Match a socket when the total gain is useful, not simply because the colors line up. Hit gems lose their offensive value above the relevant spell-hit cap. Put the blue-counting gems needed for Chaotic Skyfire Diamond into sockets with useful bonuses where possible.
-
A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +2 spell power bonus, Runed Crimson Spinel adds 12 spell power. Veiled Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 8 spell power. You trade 4 spell power for 5 spell-hit rating.Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.
When to swap gems
- After changing hit gear, talents or raid support: recalculate the hit target, then trade hit gems and spell-power gems as needed. Only count Inspiring Presence and Totem of Wrath when their spell-hit bonuses are actually available in your party; Improved Faerie Fire does not provide caster spell hit.
- For unavoidable damage: keep enough stamina to survive, using blue-counting spell-power/stamina gems where they also satisfy your meta.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Review Shadow Bolt or Incinerate cast counts and evaluate casting gaps or cancelled casts during combat.
- Verify assigned highest-rank raid curse uptime (should be 99%+ on primary boss targets).
- Measure Improved Shadow Bolt debuff uptime and track charge consumption efficiency across shadow casters.
- Check Immolate uptime and tick completion before Incinerate casts (for Fire Destruction).
- Inspect Life Tap timing to ensure taps occurred during movement rather than during Bloodlust or stationary burn windows.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- Check whether Demonic Sacrifice remains active after death or resurrection; if lost, summon and re-sacrifice the demon before resuming the DPS rotation. Resummoning a pet cancels Demonic Sacrifice.
- For Fire Destruction, never cast Incinerate without Immolate on the target, as Incinerate loses its bonus damage.
- A landed Shadow Bolt crit applies Improved Shadow Bolt for 4 charges. While active it increases Shadow damage by 20%, including DoTs; non-periodic Shadow hits consume the charges.
- Use Soulshatter before reaching the aggro threshold, allowing enough room for your next casts and damage already in flight; do not spend the cooldown at an arbitrary percentage of tank threat.
- Life Tap during forced movement or target transitions so stationary casting time is 100% dedicated to filler spells.
Common mistakes
- Casting Incinerate without Immolate active, losing significant base damage.
- Summoning any demon while Demonic Sacrifice is active, which instantly cancels the 15% damage buff.
- Pulling aggro and dying because of delayed or neglected Soulshatter during high-haste burst.
- Life Tapping excessively during Bloodlust or high-haste cooldown windows instead of hard-casting filler.
- Downranking assigned utility curses, reducing raid debuff effectiveness.
