8-minute cooldown; temporarily increases maximum and current health by 30% for 20 seconds. Use proactively before predictable lethal damage spikes or reactively during emergency health drops.
Protection Warrior PvE Tank Guide — TBC Classic
Protection Warriors provide premier single-target physical mitigation, reliable defensive cooldowns, and uncrushable tanking via Shield Block. This TBC Anniversary guide covers the deep Protection build, threat priority, computed mitigation table, cooldowns, and log review.
Is Protection Warrior worth a raid spot?
A boss-tanking option with Shield Block, defensive cooldowns, and Sunder Armor coverage. Shield Wall has a 30-minute cooldown and Last Stand an 8-minute cooldown; plan their uses around dangerous pulls. Coordinate armor debuffs and assigned shouts with the other Warriors and Rogues.

- Maintain Shield Block through the actively tanked boss's crushable melee swings; the computed cap card above accounts for its block contribution, so preserve charges for boss swings rather than low-damage adds.
- Cast Shield Slam on cooldown (6-second cooldown) as your primary snap-threat and single-target damage ability; damage scales directly with Shield Block Value.
- Cast Revenge on cooldown whenever unlocked by a block, dodge, or parry for high threat per rage.
- Cast Devastate to quickly establish and maintain 5 Sunder Armor stacks, filling open global cooldowns.
- Queue Heroic Strike (/startattack + /cast Heroic Strike) or Cleave on surplus rage (50+ rage) to convert white swings into high-threat yellow hits; cancel the queue (/stopcasting) before the swing if rage is needed for an imminent Shield Slam or Shield Block.
- Maintain Demoralizing Shout (attack power reduction) and Thunder Clap (attack speed reduction) on boss targets unless explicitly assigned to another Warrior or equivalent debuff provider (e.g. Feral Druid Demoralizing Roar; note that Druids do not provide an attack-speed slow equivalent to Thunder Clap).
Opener
- Activate Bloodrage before pull to generate starting rage.
- Charge in Battle Stance if possible, swap immediately to Defensive Stance, and cast Shield Block before the boss's first melee swing lands.
- Cast Shield Slam on your first global cooldown to secure immediate snap threat.
- Cast Revenge on proc and Devastate to rapidly stack Sunder Armor to 5.
- Coordinate Hunter Misdirection on pull for additional opening threat, then continue building threat; it does not guarantee that full-output DPS cannot overtake you.
Cooldowns
30-minute cooldown; reduces all damage taken by 75% for 13 seconds (with this build's 1/2 Improved Shield Wall) in Defensive Stance with a shield equipped. Use for scripted enrages, lethal damage collisions, or emergency tanking.
Keep Shield Block active through crushable boss melee swings and preserve its charges for the boss. The computed cap card above accounts for its active block contribution.
10-second cooldown; 25 rage base cost. With a shield equipped in Battle or Defensive Stance, reflects the next reflectable spell within 5 seconds; many boss spells cannot be reflected.
Stat caps
332
5.6% crit reduction needed
Defense skill also adds miss, dodge, parry, and block. Resilience can cover crit reduction but does not add those avoidance benefits.
102.4%
27.4% passive coverage with Shield Block
Shield Block supplies 75% block while active. Verify the combat table with the buff active and account for charge or uptime gaps.
142 Hit / 79 Exp
9% needed from gear · 6.5% dodge removed · 7.5% parry remains from front
Threat hit and expertise targets are optional after the encounter survival requirements are met. Expertise reduces boss dodge and parry together. The listed dodge-cap target removes 6.5% from both; 7.5% parry remains from the front. Fully removing parry would require 56 expertise before talents and racials.

Gems and socket bonuses
Choose gems for the job: maintain boss crit immunity, then balance health, mitigation and threat. Stamina is a reliable survival option, but filling every socket with it can leave a real defensive or threat gap elsewhere.
Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.
| Type | Gem | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Powerful Earthstorm Diamond |
A stamina-focused survival meta. Blue and blue-counting hybrid gems can satisfy its requirement. Requires: At least 3 blue gems. |
| Survival | Solid Empyrean Sapphire
Budget: Solid Star of Elune |
Adds health against both physical and magical damage. Use when surviving burst is the priority. |
| Crit immunity | Enduring Seaspray Emerald | Defense and stamina in one gem. Helps close a boss crit-immunity gap and can preserve a useful yellow-socket bonus. |
| Physical survival | Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst
Budget: Shifting Nightseye |
Agility and stamina add physical avoidance and health; agility also supports armor and crit. |
| Avoidance / threat | Delicate Crimson Spinel
Budget: Delicate Living Ruby |
An agility option when your health pool is comfortable and you want more physical avoidance and offensive stats. |
| Physical hit | Glinting Pyrestone
Budget: Glinting Noble Topaz |
Use for a meaningful physical-hit gap once survival needs are met; compare against the stamina or defense being replaced. |
When to match sockets
- Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
- Take socket bonuses when the gem and the bonus serve the set’s job. A defense/stamina hybrid can be worth more than pure stamina if it keeps you crit-immune; after that need is covered, a tiny bonus is not automatically worth giving up health.
-
A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +3 stamina bonus, Solid Empyrean Sapphire adds 15 stamina. Enduring Seaspray Emerald plus the bonus adds 10 stamina. You trade 5 stamina for 5 defense rating.Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.
When to swap gems
- After changing a defensive item: recheck crit immunity before removing defense or resilience elsewhere. Do not assume the old gem setup still covers the new set.
- Once survival is comfortable: move a few gems toward threat or avoidance for that encounter. Keep a survival setup for heavier burst damage.
- After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Gear next steps
Reviewing your logs
- Review Shield Block buff uptime and charge consumption during crushable boss swing timelines, confirming zero crushing blows received.
- Check Damage Taken to confirm zero critical strikes received, then compare the equipped set with the computed crit-immunity target and evaluate incoming damage smoothing.
- Review Shield Slam and Revenge cooldown efficiency and global usage.
- Track Sunder Armor / Devastate stack timing to confirm 5 stacks were established quickly on pull.
- Inspect defensive cooldown timing (Last Stand, Shield Wall, Ironshield Potion) relative to boss damage spikes and enrages.
- Monitor rage management: ensure rage is not capped at 100 while avoiding excessive Heroic Strike queueing that starves Shield Slam or Shield Block.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Practical tips
- Shield Block adds 75% block chance and, with Improved Shield Block, lasts up to 6 seconds or two blocks. It is off the global cooldown with a 5-second cooldown. Track charges against incoming boss swings; adds and additional blockable attacks can consume them early.
- Use separate macros for Heroic Strike queueing (/startattack + /cast Heroic Strike) and canceling (/stopcasting) so you can instantly cancel the queue if rage drops below what is needed for Shield Slam or Shield Block.
- With 3/3 Tactical Mastery, you retain up to 25 rage when switching stances. Thunder Clap is usable in Defensive Stance, so you do not need to switch for it. Change to Battle Stance for Overpower or Mocking Blow, or Berserker Stance for Berserker Rage and Intercept, only when needed.
- Use Last Stand (+30% health) and Shield Wall (-75% damage) proactively before predictable lethal damage spikes (e.g. boss enrages, special ability bursts), not reactively after dropping to critical health.
- Maintain Demoralizing Shout and Thunder Clap on the boss unless explicitly assigned to another tank (note: Feral Druids provide Demoralizing Roar but cannot provide an attack speed reduction equivalent to Thunder Clap).
Common mistakes
- Dropping below the computed boss crit-immunity target when equipping threat or DPS offset pieces, exposing yourself to fatal boss critical strikes.
- Letting Shield Block charges drop or wasting them on minor adds right before a boss melee swing lands, taking crushing blows.
- Equipping Superior Wizard Oil or spell oils instead of Adamantite Sharpening Stones or Weightstones on tank weapons.
- Over-queuing Heroic Strike with low rage and starving the next Shield Slam or Shield Block.
- Stacking pure avoidance (Dodge/Parry) at the expense of Stamina and Armor, resulting in spiky, unpredictable damage intake that stresses healers.
- Failing to maintain Demoralizing Shout and Thunder Clap mitigation debuffs on the boss when no other player is assigned to them.
