Restoration Shaman BiS

Is Restoration Shaman worth a raid spot?

Restoration Shamans are premier raid healers and tank stabilizers. One or two per raid are standard, depending on the raid's healing roster, encounter damage profile, and tank healing assignments. Chain Heal delivers unmatched AoE healing on stacked raid damage, Earth Shield provides consistent passive stabilization on active tanks, and Mana Tide Totem supplies essential party-local mana recovery. Anniversary Bloodlust is raid-wide with a 10-minute Sated/Exhaustion lockout, so Restoration Shamans are brought for exceptional cluster healing and group totem support rather than lust chaining.

Rotation priority

  1. Maintain 100% Water Shield uptime before pull and throughout combat; refresh when charges or duration expire for continuous passive MP5 and reactive mana returns upon taking damage.
  2. Cast Chain Heal (Rank 4 or Rank 5 for heavy raid damage; Rank 2 or Rank 3 for moderate cluster damage) into clusters of injured allies; Chain Heal hits 3 total targets, jumping up to 10 yards from the prior target with a 50% healing reduction per jump. Start Chain Heal on an injured target within 10 yards of the next intended jump to ensure full 3-target jumps, rather than targeting an isolated ally where jumps fail.
  3. Maintain Earth Shield (Rank 3) active on the assigned tank or primary damage-taker; track its 6 charges, 3.5s internal proc cooldown, and coordinate with other shamans to avoid overwriting active shields.
  4. On tank-healing assignments, cast Healing Wave to build and maintain 3 stacks of Healing Way (+6% per stack, up to +18% total Healing Wave healing on that target) before predictable spikes; use Lesser Healing Wave for emergency single-target triage when cast time is critical.
  5. Manage four totem slots: Earth (Strength of Earth Totem, Stoneskin Totem, Tremor Totem), Water (Mana Spring Totem, Healing Stream Totem, cleansing or fire-resistance totems, and Mana Tide Totem), Air (Wrath of Air Totem, Grace of Air Totem, Grounding Totem, Windfury Totem), and Fire (Searing Totem, Magma Totem, Fire Nova Totem or frost-resistance support). Re-plant party buffs after movement and restore Mana Spring Totem after Mana Tide Totem ends.

Opener

Water Shield Earth Shield Healing Wave Chain Heal
  1. Apply Water Shield to yourself and Earth Shield on the designated tank before the pull.
  2. Pre-plant assigned totems (Earth, Water, Air, Fire) at the designated healing position, drink to full, and pre-cast Healing Wave to land immediately following the boss's opening melee swing.
  3. Position where you can target multiple raid clusters for Chain Heal bounces within 40 yards and where party members stay within Mana Tide Totem radius (20–30 yards).
  4. Reserve Nature's Swiftness as a planned emergency recovery or predictable-spike answer paired with max-rank Healing Wave or Chain Heal (note that Nature's Swiftness makes the spell instant, but not mana-free).
  5. Pace Chain Heal casts during raid-wide Bloodlust to avoid reckless overhealing or premature mana exhaustion under elevated haste.

Cooldowns

Mana Tide Totem

5-minute cooldown. Restores 6% total mana every 3 seconds for 12 seconds (4 ticks, up to 24% total mana) to party members within 20 yards (30 yards with Totemic Mastery). Occupies the Water totem slot; deploy where party members will remain stationary for all 4 ticks.

Nature's Swiftness

3-minute cooldown. Makes your next Nature spell instant-cast; pair with max-rank Healing Wave for an emergency tank save or Chain Heal for rapid raid recovery (budget mana for the follow-up spell).

Bloodlust

Anniversary Bloodlust is raid-wide with a 10-minute Sated/Exhaustion lockout; coordinate with raid cooldowns and major damage windows.

Stat caps

Bonus Healing

No hard cap

+Healing scales every rank of Chain Heal, Healing Wave, and Lesser Healing Wave linearly. Balance +healing with MP5, Intellect, and survival Stamina according to encounter damage intensity and fight duration.

Chain Heal & Healing Way Mechanics

3 targets / 10-yard jump / +18% max Healing Way

Chain Heal hits 3 total targets, jumping up to 10 yards from the previous target with a 50% effectiveness reduction per jump. 3/3 Healing Way grants a 100% chance on Healing Wave to stack a 6% healing increase on the target up to 3 times (+18% total bonus healing, not 27%).

Mana Recovery

No hard cap

Combine MP5, Intellect (which increases mana pool and spell crit for Ancestral Healing), Water Shield passive and globe returns, and Mana Tide Totem to sustain continuous Chain Heal casting.

Spell Haste

1.0s GCD floor 15.77 rating = 1%

Haste shortens Chain Heal (2.5s base) and Healing Wave (3.0s base, 2.5s with this build's Improved Healing Wave) and the spell GCD. The 1.0-second floor applies to the GCD, not the cast itself. Balance faster casting against mana and useful healing.

Gems and socket bonuses

Start with healing power once your meta is active and you have enough mana for the encounter. Filling spare sockets with Teardrop Crimson Spinel can beat matching colors for small bonuses; mana needs and your healing assignment still matter.

Use epic cuts on gear you expect to keep. Listed budget cuts suit temporary items or a tighter budget; compare your server’s prices before upgrading.

Type Gem Use
Meta Insightful Earthstorm Diamond The mana-return default for sustained healing. A red-heavy setup still needs enough other colors to keep this active.

Requires: At least 2 red, 2 yellow, and 2 blue gems.

Healing Teardrop Crimson Spinel

Budget: Teardrop Living Ruby

The throughput choice for spare sockets, including yellow or blue sockets whose bonuses do not repay the healing you lose.
Healing / mana Luminous Pyrestone

Budget: Luminous Noble Topaz

Adds intellect while counting as red and yellow. Useful for meta activation, mana support or a worthwhile yellow-socket bonus.
Healing / mana Royal Shadowsong Amethyst

Budget: Royal Nightseye

Adds steady MP5 while counting as red and blue. Use for meta activation or when sustained casting needs more mana.
Meta alternative Bracing Earthstorm Diamond A throughput alternative when the mana-return meta is no longer useful to you. Recheck its different color requirement before switching.

Requires: More red gems than blue gems.

When to match sockets

  • Any ordinary gem fits any non-meta socket. Matching every socket on an item activates its bonus; a mismatch keeps the gem’s own stats. Hybrid gems count as both colors for your meta, regardless of the socket they occupy.
  • Do not buy every socket bonus at the cost of healing power. First reserve the hybrids that activate your meta, then compare the bonus and secondary stat with the healing you give up. Two Luminous Pyrestone and two Royal Shadowsong Amethyst cover Insightful Earthstorm Diamond’s color requirements.
  • A socket tradeoff
For a yellow socket with a +4 healing bonus, Teardrop Crimson Spinel adds 22 healing. Luminous Pyrestone plus the bonus adds 15 healing. You trade 7 healing for 5 intellect.

Assumes your meta is already active; before talents and buffs.

When to swap gems

  • Long Chain Heal assignments: use MP5 hybrids if mana is the limit. Spirit is not an equivalent substitute for steady MP5 while casting.
  • Shorter kills with mana left over: move optional regeneration gems back toward healing power, while keeping your meta active.
  • After replacing gear or changing gems, recheck your meta across the whole equipped set. A color that looked expendable may be keeping it active.

Reviewing your logs

DPS tier list

  • Review Chain Heal target selection, effective jump count (up to 3 targets), 10-yard jump validity, and overheal distribution.
  • Review Earth Shield uptime on assigned tanks, 6-charge consumption rate, 3.5s proc spacing, and cross-shaman overwrite checks.
  • Inspect Healing Way stack maintenance (maintaining 3 stacks / +18%) and uptime on assigned tank targets.
  • Verify Mana Tide Totem timing, party member coverage, full 4-tick reception, and water-slot displacement.
  • Check Nature's Swiftness usage, follow-up spell selection, and mana planning (instant, not free).
  • Review Water Shield uptime, passive regen, and globe consumption procs alongside early Super Mana Potion and Dark Rune usage.

Tips and Common Mistakes

Practical tips

  • Start Chain Heal on an injured target within 10 yards of the next intended jump; targeting an isolated player leads to dead jumps.
  • Keep multiple Chain Heal ranks bound (Rank 5, Rank 4, Rank 2/3). Downranking saves mana but still resets the five-second rule; canceled or paused casts allow Spirit regeneration once five seconds have passed without spending mana.
  • Coordinate Earth Shield with fellow shamans: 6 charges, 3.5s proc cooldown, 1 target per shaman; avoid overwriting other shamans' shields.
  • Maintain 3 stacks of Healing Way on your assigned tank before major boss hits using consecutive Healing Waves (+18% bonus healing at 3 stacks).
  • Mana Tide Totem is party-local (20–30 yard range) and lasts 12 seconds (4 ticks); coordinate with party members and drop where they remain stationary.
  • Keep Water Shield active for passive regeneration and refresh depleted charges. Take advantage of unavoidable damage that triggers globes; avoid extra damage that costs healers more mana than you recover.
  • Remember that Nature's Swiftness makes your next Nature spell instant, but does not waive its mana cost; budget mana for the follow-up cast.

Common mistakes

  • Spamming maximum-rank Chain Heal into light aura damage or isolated targets where jumps fail, causing premature mana exhaustion.
  • Neglecting Water Shield uptime or failing to refresh globes during combat.
  • Overwriting another shaman's active Earth Shield or letting tank charges drop during heavy incoming damage.
  • Dropping Mana Tide Totem outside active party range or immediately before a movement phase that breaks coverage.
  • Treating Nature's Swiftness as a free heal and failing to budget mana for the max-rank follow-up cast.
  • Stating Healing Way stacks to 27% (it stacks to +18% total at 3 stacks).
  • Ignoring totem utility or elemental slot conflicts because Bloodlust became raid-wide.
